Intervening in Mathematics Group Work in the Middle Grades

Vol.26 No.1

Over the last three decades, there has been an increasingly strong emphasis on group-centered approaches to mathematics teaching. One primary responsibility for teachers who use group-centered instruction is to “check in”, or intervene, with groups to monitor group learning and provide mathematical support when necessary. While prior research has contributed valuable insight for successful teacher interventions in mathematics group work, there is a need for more fine-grained analyses of interactions between teachers and students. In this study, we co-conducted research with an exemplary middle grade teacher (Ms. Green) to learn about fine-grained details of her intervention practices, hoping to generate knowledge about successful teacher interventions that can be expanded, replicated, and/or contradicted in other contexts. Analyzing Ms. Green’s practices as an exemplary case, we found that she used exceptionally short interventions (35 seconds on average), provided space for student dialogue, and applied four distinct strategies to support groups to make mathematical progress: (1) observing/listening before speaking; (2) using a combination of social and analytic scaffolds; (3) redirecting students to task instructions; (4) abruptly walking away. These findings imply that successful interventions may be characterized by brevity, shared dialogue between the teacher and students, and distinct (and sometimes unnatural) teaching moves.

      • From Poverty to Power

Vol.2014 No.-

Duncan Green, author of From Poverty to Power and the high-quality blog by the same name, was for many years senior strategic advisor to Oxfam UK. Oxfam is one of the most prestigious NGOs fighting poverty on a global scale and stands out by its particular focus on enhancing and expanding the power of the poor. Although Green makes it clear that he is not writing as the official voice of Oxfam, this focus on power can naturally be found is his book. Many different aspects of the fight against poverty are addressed, but there is continual emphasis on the idea that poverty is much more than low income: it is a sense of powerlessness, exhaustion, and exclusion from decision-making. Green rejects the idea that poor people should be passive recipients of charity. Rather, priority is given to helping poor people build up their power. From this perspective, the author sees effective states and active citizens (citizens exercising their full range of political, civil, and social rights) as playing a crucial role in bringing about genuine human development. Many examples are provided of local communities who – sometimes with Oxfam’s help – have managed to escape poverty through fighting for their rights. But the role of private companies (called “the third pillar” in the book) is not neglected. A healthy private sector is deemed essential in the fight against poverty, and Green admits that harnessing the dynamism of the private sector can trigger extraordinary development. His stance towards businesses is to challenge them in a respectful and cooperative but firm way, which is pretty much Oxfam’s position as well (for example, the organization performed an analysis of Unilever’s poverty footprint in Indonesia and launched a stimulating “Behind the Brands” campaign)

      • THE CDF ARCHIVE:HERSCHELPACS AND SPIRE SPECTROSCOPIC DATA PIPELINE AND PRODUCTS FOR PROTOSTARS AND YOUNG STELLAR OBJECTS

        Green, Joel D.,Yang, Yao-Lun,II, Neal J. Evans,Karska, Agata,Herczeg, Gregory,Dishoeck, Ewine F. van,Lee, Jeong-Eun,Larson, Rebecca L.,Bouwman, Jeroen American Astronomical Society 2016 The Astronomical journal Vol.151 No.3

We present the COPS-DIGIT-FOOSH (CDF) Herschel spectroscopy data product archive, and related ancillary data products, along with data fidelity assessments, and a user-created archive in collaboration with the Herschel-PACS and SPIRE ICC groups. Our products include datacubes, contour maps, automated line fitting results, and best 1D spectra products for all protostellar and disk sources observed with PACS in RangeScan mode for two observing programs: the DIGIT Open Time Key Program (KPOT_nevans_1 and SDP_nevans_1; PI: N.. Evans), and the FOOSH Open Time Program (OT1_jgreen02_2; PI: J. Green). In addition, we provide our best SPIRE-FTS spectroscopic products for the COPS Open Time Program (OT2_jgreen02_6; PI: J. Green) and FOOSH sources. We include details of data processing, descriptions of output products, and tests of their reliability for user applications. We identify the parts of the data set to be used with caution. The resulting absolute flux calibration has improved in almost all cases. Compared to previous reductions, the resulting rotational temperatures and numbers of CO molecules have changed substantially in some sources. On average, however, the rotational temperatures have not changed substantially (<2%), but the number of warm (T-rot similar to 300 K) CO molecules has increased by about 18%.

Promoting Expanding Circle Englishes: Student Perceptions of the Korean Variety of English and an English as an Intercultural Language Classroom Strategy

Vol.25 No.1

The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of 30 Korean university students majoring in English on the use of the Korean Variety of English (KVE) as well as on a class activity that promotes its use. Designed within the framework of the English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) paradigm (Green & Lee, 2018), which is supportive of the use of localized versions of English, the activity involved having participants re-write a story that uses inner circle English to a story that uses KVE. This activity was aimed at increasing students’ awareness of KVE and raising issues related to its use in the context of World Englishes. The findings revealed that the participants demonstrated a substantial awareness of many lexical forms of KVE but had less awareness of grammatical features of KVE. Regarding the legitimacy and use of KVE, a variety of opinions were expressed by the participants but the majority had negative perceptions overall; however, most participants felt the use of KVE was appropriate in certain circumstances. The majority of participants had positive perceptions of the activity used for this study. The implications of the study for both EFL learners and educators are discussed.

      • English as an Intercultural Language in EFL Settings: Student Perceptions and Classroom Strategies

Vol.2017 No.-

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the concept of English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) (Green & Lee, 2015; Lee, 2012; Sifakis, 2004) and to summarize the results of two studies that identified Korean university students’ perceptions of EIcL, one related to classroom learning and the other to study abroad experiences in the outer circle (Kachru, 1992). In addition, the presenter will introduce several pedagogical approaches and strategies that can promote EIcL in the EFL classroom.

Dynamic Pedagogy and the English as an Intercultural Language Paradigm: A Model for the EFL Classroom

Vol.38 No.1

The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine two pedagogical approaches that have arisen in response to the pervasive influence that World Englishes currently has on EFL education, Dynamic Pedagogy (DP) (Mahboob and Dutcher 2013) and English as an Intercultural Language (EIcl) (Green and Lee K. Y. 2018), as well as to explore a means of converging these two approaches in an EFL setting. Specifically, the study identifies the perceptions of 24 Korean university students to a classroom activity designed to raise the awareness of the participants to several tenets of both DP and EIcL. The results indicate that the activity promoted this awareness for the majority of participants and that the participants had a positive perception of the activity itself. With these findings in mind, a number of pedagogical implications are discussed.

Student Perceptions of the English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) Paradigm

Vol.35 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) (Green and Lee 2015; Lee 2012; Sifakis 2004) and to present the results of two studies that identified Korean university students’ perceptions of EIcL. The first study examined the perceptions of 60 Korean university students about the incorporation of EIcL in the EFL classroom. The second study looked at the perceptions of 25 Korean university students who took part in study abroad experiences in the Philippines, a so-called member of the outer circle (Kachru 1992). The results of these two studies indicate that there is an awareness of and interest in learning EIcL on the part of the participants. The results also have a number of valuable implications for educators and learners regarding the role of English in today’s highly interconnected, global environment.
