Meat Quality of Crossbred Porkers without the Gene RYR1T Depending on Slaughter Weight

        Grazyna Czyzak-Runowska,Janusz Wojtczak,Andrzej Lyczynski,Jacek Wojtowski,Maria Markiewicz-Keszycka,Daniel Stanislawski,Marek Babicz 아세아·태평양축산학회 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.3

The first aim of the study was to compare selected meat quality parameters in porkers without the gene RYR1T (ryanodine receptor gene). These were porkers slaughtered at 100 to 115 kg and 116 to 130 kg live weight. The second aim of the study was to determine the occurrence frequency of standard-quality meat (red, firm, nonexudative [RFN]) and the occurence frequency of defective meat (pale, soft, exudative [PSE] and acid, soft, exudative [ASE]). The analysis was conducted on the longissimus lumborum muscle in 114 crossbred porkers. The porkers were a cross of Camborough 22 sows and boars from lines 337PIC (Pig Improvement Company), Norsvin Landrace and Pietrain. All of the animals were provided with identical environmental and nutritional conditions. The average weight of the slaughtered animals in the light and heavy groups was 110 kg and 122 kg, respectively. Both groups had the same average post-slaughter meatiness (56.5%). A statistical analysis of selected meat-quality parameters did not show any significant differences between the weight groups. On the other hand, the classification based on carcass quality showed an occurence frequency of defective meat in heavier crossbred porkers (116 to 130 kg) that was three times higher than in those crossbred animals which weighed 100 to 115 kg when slaughtered. In porkers without the gene RYR1T, the defective meat types PSE and ASE occurred with a frequency of 17.54%.

Photocycloaddition of the $T_1$ excited state of thioinosine to uridine and adenosine

        Wenska, Grazyna,Filipiak, Piotr,Burdzinski, Gotard,Pedzinski, Tomasz,Hug, Gordon L.,Gdaniec, Zofia Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.10

Novel photoadducts were obtained by irradiation of thioinosine (6-thiopurine riboside, TI) in deaerated aqueous solution without and in the presence of uridine and adenosine. Excitation ($\lambda$ > 300 nm) of TI to its excited $S_2$ state yields a single bimolecular photoproduct. It is a purine-pyrimidine diriboside in which the purine ring is attached to the amide nitrogen of 6-amino-4-thioxo-5-formamidopyrimidine. When TI was irradiated in the presence of an excess of adenosine, two photoproducts were isolated: diribosides of N-(4,6-diaminopirymidin-5-yl)-N-formyl-6-aminopurine and N-(4-amino-6-formylamino-pyrimidin-5-yl)-6-aminopurine, both containing a purine and a formylaminopyrimidine (Fapy) fragment. The photoreaction of TI with uridine gave two regioisomeric photoproducts identified as diribosides containing either 5- or 6-(purin-6-yl)uracil as aglycones. A multistep mechanism leading to the stable photoproducts is proposed. In the first step of the mechanism, the C=S group of the excited TI undergoes a [2 + 2] cycloaddition regioselectively to the N(7)=C(8) bond of the purine ring or adds in a non-regioselective manner to the C(5)=C(6) bond of uracil. The unstable photoproducts thus formed undergo a series of dark reactions at room temperature. The photocycloaddition reactions originate from the excited $T_1$ state of TI. This conclusion is supported by a combination of evidence from reaction quenching studies using both steady-state quantum yield determinations and kinetics results from nanosecond laser flash photolysis. The $T_1$ state of TI is quenched by other TI molecules in their $S_0$ state (self-quenching) and also by uridine and adenosine, all with large rate constants (0.8-5) ${\times}10^9M^{-1}s^{-1}$. The quantum yields of the reactions are in general very low (${\Phi}_R{\leq}8{\times}10^{-3}$). The sources of the inefficiency in the photocycloaddition of TI to uridine and adenosine are discussed. The photoproducts containing the Fapy residue undergo deformylation and isomerization of the ribosyl moiety (anomerization, furanose/pyranose transformation) upon heating in aqueous solution. Products of the transformations were identified.

      • What Do Web Users Know about Skin Self-Examination and Melanoma Symptoms?

Kaminska-Winciorek, Grazyna,Gajda, Maksymilian,Wydmanski, Jerzy,Tukiendorf, Andrzej Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.7

Background: Skin self-examination (SSE) may facilitate early diagnosis of melanoma at a potentially curable stage. Little data are available concerning the SSE frequency and knowledge about the symptoms of melanoma in non-patient populations. The aim of our study was to assess the performance of skin self-examination, recognition of potential melanoma symptoms as well as behavior related to sun exposure among web users in Poland. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among readers of a scientific portal. Invited respondents were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted on 4,919 surveys towards potential clinical signs of melanoma and SSE performance. Results: Approximately 60% of respondents had ever performed SSE in their life. Only 18.4 % declared performance on a regular, monthly, basis. Factors promoting this activity were established to be bigger place of residence, higher education and sensitive skin phototype, higher level of knowledge concerning melanoma, safe tanning rules and, especially, past surgical excision of naevi. Declared longer use of tanning beds was linked to understanding better the importance of clinical features of melanoma. Awareness of hazardous behavior during sunbathing is associated with the attempts to change them. Conclusions: Regular SSE is not a common practice, whilst the knowledge about the clinical features of melanoma is varied. Therefore, constant pressure should be put on promotion of regular skin self-examination and teaching its proper techniques, including familiarity with the ABCD (asymmetry; border; color; diameter) rule and its extension of "EFG" (elevated, firm, progressive growth) criteria.

Non-Paraneoplastic Autoimmune Retinopathy: The First Case Report in Korea

        김민,최은영,Grazyna Adamus,고형준,이성철 연세대학교의과대학 2016 Yonsei medical journal Vol.57 No.2

Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) is an immune-mediated retinopathy, resulting from an immunologic process caused by the aberrantrecognition of retinal antigens as autoantigens. The diagnosis of AIR involves the detection of antiretinal antibodies with concurrentclinical and electrophysiological evidence of retinopathy. A 40-year-old patient presented with progressive loss of bilateral vision over several months. A fundus examination was unremarkable. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography revealed a blurred photoreceptor ellipsoid zone at the subfoveal region in both eyes with more prominent disruption in the left eye. Full-field electroretinography (ERG) showed relatively normal rod and cone responses in the right eye, and decreased photopic b-waves with minimal attenuation of a-waves in the left eye. Multifocal ERG demonstrated slightly reduced amplitude of the inner segment ring in the right eye and decreased amplitudes and delayed latencies of all modalities in the left eye. The patient was suspectedto have AIR and it was supported by positive Western blots for 23-kDa protein, enolase (46-kDa), aldolase (40-kDa), 62-kDa and 78-kDa proteins and by immunohistochemical staining of human retinal bipolar and ganglion cells. Despite the immunosuppressivetreatment, the destruction of the retinal photoreceptors progressed, and immunosuppressive interventions produced very little visual improvement. We report on what is, to the best of our knowledge, the very first case of serologically confirmed nonparaneoplastic AIR in Korea.

      • Valorization of swine manure into low cost activated carbons capable of Cr(VI) removal

        Gonsalvesh, Lenia,Gryglewicz, Grazyna,Carleer, Robert,Yperman, Jan Techno-Press 2017 Advances in environmental research Vol.6 No.2

The valorization of swine manure samples, i.e., de-watered cake (SMc) and solid digestate (SMd), in products with beneficial value, i.e., low cost activated carbons (ACs), is studied. For this purpose slow pyrolysis and steam activation at three different duration times are applied. Additionally, the obtained ACs are characterized and tested towards removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. It is revealed that BET surface area varies in the range of $236-267m^2/g$ for ACs prepared from SMc sample and in the range of $411-432m^2/g$ for ACs prepared from SMd sample. Despite the low determined surface area of prepared ACs, a high total Cr removal capacity is observed occurring through a "coupled adsorption-reduction" mechanism. Higher Cr(VI) removal capacity is demonstrated for ACs having higher surface area ($q_m$ is 140.9 mg/g according Langmuir modelling). Cr(VI) removal is found to be pH dependent with a maximum at pH 1. However at that pH significant amounts of Cr remain in the solution as Cr(III). At pH 2 lower amount of Cr(VI) is removed compensated by a higher removal of Cr(III) resulting in a higher amount of adsorbed $Cr_{tot}$. Therefore adsorption at pH 2 is found to be appropriate. The removal capacity of the studied ACs towards Cr(VI) is almost independent of activation time.

      • Do Not Let to Be Late: Overview of Reasons for Melanoma Delayed Diagnosis

Gajda, Maksymilian,Kaminska-Winciorek, Grazyna Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.9

Melanoma of the skin is a malignant tumor, which incidence is still increasing. It was estimated that in the United States one person died from this cause every hour. The major risk factor of this disease is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially associated with the occurrence of sunburns. Patients diagnosed with distant metastases have median survival of 6-9 months. The aim of this paper was to identify the causes of delayed diagnosis of melanoma as diagnosis at an early stage seems to be the key to improve the survival rates. For this purpose, a search of medical databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Cancer Registers was conducted and an analysis of the literature from the years 1979-2013 was conducted.

An Immobilization of Extracellular Laccase to Humus - Iron Complex

        Cho, Nam Seok,Leonowicz, Andrzej,Ginalska, Grazyna,Lobarzewski, Jerzy,Piccolo, Alessandro 한국목재공학회 2001 목재공학 Vol.29 No.3

There are some evidence that active enzymatic proteins, e.g. fungal laccase, exist in the naturally occured soil humus. This study was performed to investigate the covalent binding of fungal lactase to the humic acid-iron complex, and to measure lactase activity of immobilized ones. Seven methods were adopted to form the covalent binding of fungal lactase with soil humic acids complexed with iron. Using these seven methods it was possible to change the dimension of spacer arm between lactase and support, and also to regulate the mode of covalent binding of this enzyme. The spacer arm was regulated from 2C to 11C. There was not observed any straight relationship between the spacer arm longitude and the lactase activity after immobilization, but the binding mode more effective than the former. Three out of the seven methods gave the high activity of immobilized lactase, and which active products of lactase immobilization was stable up to 10 days after the process. It is indicated that natural soil condition might be prevented the lactase activation by the toxic influence of some phenolic humic compounds. It was shown, for the first time, the possibilities to obtain the high activity of fungal lactase by binding to humic acids, and especially in complex with iron.

The effects of the adenosine A3 receptor agonist IB-MECA on sodium taurocholate-induced experimental acute pancreatitis

        Beata Prozorow-Krol,Agnieszka Korolczuk,Grazyna Czechowska,Maria Slomka,Agnieszka Madro,Krzysztof Celinski 대한약학회 2013 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.36 No.9

The role of adenosine A3 receptors and theirdistribution in the gastrointestinal tract have been widelyinvestigated. Most of the reports discuss their role inintestinal inflammations. However, the role of adenosineA3 receptor agonist in pancreatitis has not been wellestablished. The aim of this study is (Ed note: Purposestatements should be in present tense) to evaluate theeffects of the adenosine A3 receptor agonist on the courseof sodium taurocholate-induced experimental acute pancreatitis(EAP). The experiments were performed on 80male Wistar rats, 58 of which survived, subdivided into 3groups: C—control rats, I—EAP group, and II—EAPgroup treated with the adenosine A3 receptor agonistIB-MECA (1-deoxy-1-6[[(3-iodophenyl) methyl]amino]-9H-purin-9-yl)-N-methyl-B-D-ribofuronamide at a dose of0.75 mg/kg b.w. i.p. at 48, 24, 12 and 1 h before and 1 hafter the injection of 5 % sodium taurocholate solution intothe biliary–pancreatic duct. Serum for a-amylase and lipasedeterminations and tissue samples for morphologicalexaminations were collected at 2, 6, and 24 h of theexperiment. In the IB-MECA group, a-amylase activitywas decreased with statistically high significance comparedto group I. The activity of lipase was not significantlydifferent among the experimental groups but higher than inthe control group. The administration of IB-MECA attenuatedthe histological parameters of inflammation ascompared to untreated animals. The use of A3 receptoragonist IB-MECA attenuates EAP. Our findings suggestthat stimulation of adenosine A3 receptors plays a positiverole in the sodium taurocholate-induced EAP in rats.

      • Assessment of Midwifery Student Preparation for Performing the Role of Breast Cancer Educator

Bien, Agnieszka Maria,Korzynska-Pietas, Magdalena,Iwanowicz-Palus, Grazyna Jolanta Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.14

Purpose: Our research project aimed at presenting midwifery student self-assessment of performing the role of breast cancer prevention educator. Materials and Methods: Investigations were carried out in 2011 at the Medical University of Lublin in Poland, and Katolieke Hogeschool of Kortrijk in Belgium, after obtaining approval of the ethical committee of Polish Midwives Association (III/EC/2011/PMA). The project involved a total of 155 midwifery students, made up of 95 from Poland, and 60 from Belgium. Relations between opposing characteristics were tested with Chi-square ($x^2$) test for independent traits. To assess the dependence relation between the examined variables Pearson's corrected coefficient was used. Data base and statistics were carried out with computer software STATISTICA 9.0 (StatSoftPoland). Conclusions: Student knowledge on prevention against breast cancer was unsatisfactory. The students place of residence determined their self-estimation of personal knowledge of breast cancer prevention and diagnosing methods to assess the incidence of the disease, this knowledge being better with the students of Lublin. Better self-estimation in the students of Lublin of their personal knowledge on factors rising the risk of breast cancer, such as alimentation method, application of oral contraceptives and breast feeding was found than in Belgian students.
