Females and Barriers to Work-Family Balance: A Case Study of Casino Dealers
( Grace,Suk Ha Chan ),( Perry,Yun Kit Ip ),( Fei Fei Lin ),( Xi Chen ) 한국문화관광학회 2018 문화관광연구 Vol.20 No.1
A positive work-family balance (WFB) can enhance service quality and facilitate job satisfaction among staff members, thereby reducing absenteeism and turnover rate. Female participation in hospitality is one of the significant changes in the last century. Significant progress has been achieved by women with their increase movements in their occupations. The proportion of female dealers in Macau has increased. If females spend additional time in their job, they will often spend less time for their family and social life. This condition is often considered ‘win-lose’ outcomes and hardly achieves WFB. This study investigates the features of quality WFB of female dealers in a casino hotel in Macau. Long work hours, shift duties, demanding customers and a stressful environment are taken-for-granted in the casino business and could lead to an unbalanced WFB. This qualitative study involves face-to-face interviews with 25 casino hotel female dealers from five major large casino hotels in Macau. Content analysis is used to elaborate the female employees’ perception of WFB and identify the challenges and barriers in achieving WFB. Findings show that human resources should provide additional support to eliminate the concern of females in balancing their family and job security. Recommendations will be formulated in the study.

The Galenic venous system plays a vital role in the drainage of blood from deeper parts of the brain. This venous system is contributed by many major veins. These veins are located closer to the pineal gland making the surgical approach in this region difficult. Any accidental injury or occlusion of the vein of Galen could lead to devasting results. Thus, studying the dimensions of the vein of Galen is more important. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the morphometry and trajectory to the vein of Galen. About 100 computed tomographic venography records were evaluated and the length, diameter of vein of Galen, angle between straight sinus and vein of Galen and distance from internal occipital protuberance and roof of fourth ventricle to vein of Galen were studied. The mean length and diameter of vein of Galen were 9.8±2.7 and 4.08±1.04 respectively. The mean angle between straight sinus and vein of Galen was 64.2°. The mean distance between external occipital protuberance and roof of fourth ventricle to vein of Galen were 52±6.9 and 33.3±4.5 respectively. No significant morphometric differences were observed between the age groups as well as between the sexs. The results obtained from this study may be helpful for the neurosurgeons in better understanding of the anatomy of the Galenic venous system and to adopt a safe surgical approach to improve the efficacy of the surgeries of the pineal gland and also in the region of vein of Galen.

Purpose: Intravenous phenobarbital has not been available at our institution since 2019. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral phenobarbital loading at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg to achieve therapeutic serum levels and clinical seizure control in pediatric patients with acute repetitive seizures. Methods: This is a retrospective single-center review of the medical records of pediatric patients admitted for acute repetitive seizures (from January 2019 to June 2022) at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center who were given an oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg with serum level measurements taken within 48 hours after oral loading. Results: Eleven patients were given a single oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg, while 14 were given two doses of 10 mg/kg 12 hours apart. All 25 patients achieved therapeutic serum levels within 48 hours post-loading. Higher serum levels were seen at 48 hours (median, 19.8 μg/mL at 24 hours vs. 24.4 μg/mL at 48 hours). This difference was statistically significant at 5% (P=0.023), and the majority achieved adequate seizure control without requiring additional anti-seizure medications (76%). Transient drowsiness was the most commonly documented adverse effect. Conclusion: Oral loading of phenobarbital at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg given as a single dose or in two divided doses is an effective and safe alternative to achieve therapeutic serum levels and adequate clinical seizure control at 24 hours post-loading. This may be a promising and useful intervention at centers without available intravenous phenobarbital.
Toward a Ditransitive Prototype:The Gradience of English Ditransitives

Moon, Grace Ge-Soon. 2014. Toward a Ditransitive Prototype: The Gradienceof English Ditransitives. English Language and Linguistics 20.3, 115-134. Ditransitive constructions in English display a wide variation in acceptability judgments. Thepresent paper attempts to account for this variation within the framework of prototype theory. Specifically, it proposes a ditransitive prototype based on both the semantic features identified in previous research as relevant to prototypicaltransitivity and the properties that characterize the canonical ditransitive verb give.Arguing that the acceptability of ditransitive constructions is a reflex of theirpoximity to the proposed ditransitive prototype, the paper demonstrates that the"ditransitivity" of a given clause is determined by an interplay between the objectiveproperties of the clause itself and the speaker's subjective construal of the event described in the clause.

Guided with the principles of Lesson Study and Productive Pedagogies as applied to microteaching, this paper discusses the results and conclusions of a series of activities done by some graduate students of De La Salle University, Philippines in an attempt to test the applicability of the lesson ¬Sequence and Patterns - to introduce variables to seventh graders. The post-lesson discussion and a posteriori analysis proved the lesson to be a practical means to address the issue as it was able to put forward discourses and elaborations on possible students`` understanding of variables generated through attempts to describe patterns occurring in sequences presented.

Involvement in Child Care among Korean Fathers in Multicultural Families
Grace H. Chung 한국아동학회 2014 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.4 No.2
The number of multicultural families with children are growing in South Korea. When it comes to childrearing, co-existence of two different cultures in these families pose unique challenges as husbands and wives navigate differences in norms and practices. The goal of this study was to examine what predicts involvement in child care among South Korean fathers in multicultural families. We hypothesized that the degree of wives`` adaptation to South Korea and husbands`` cultural characteristics, such as family ideology and cultural competence, would influence father involvement in child care. The sample consisted of 138 Korean fathers and their wives from China. Participants completed a questionnaire. Results showed that South Korean fathers engaged in a moderate level of child care activities. As hypothesized, their Chinese wives`` level of adaptation to South Korea and their own cultural characteristics were significantly associated with their involvement in child care. South Korean fathers were more likely to get involved in child care when their wives were less acculturated. Also, culturally considerate and less traditional men in terms of family ideology were more likely to perform child care.
Observations and Remarks on Relative Pronoun Variation in English

Moon, Gace Ge-Soon, 2012, Observations and Remarks on Relative Pronoun Variation in English, Linguistic Research 29(2), 281-297. This Paper examines the pronominal variation exhibited in restrictive relative clauses with non-human referents in modem American English. On the basis of a small-scale quantitative analysis of the Corpus of Contemporary American English, the paper shows that the choice between the pronouns which and that is primarily conditioned by the medium and genre of communication, as well the level of stylistic formality, It is also suggested that an interplay of grammatical roles and discourse functions further affects the variation in question.

We report improved electron transport in solution-processed ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) employing polymer dielectric blends of low-k poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polyurethane (PU) elastomer. Ambipolar poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) OFETs typically showed an unbalanced hole and electron mobilities of 8.7 ± 0.4 × 10-4 and 2.0±0.1×10-4 cm2V-1s-1 respectively, using neat PMMA gate dielectric. By controlling the blending ratio of PU (0~50 v%) in the PMMA-PU blend dielectrics, we tuned the charge carrier transport in the F8BT OFETs. The electron mobility gradually increases significantly, resulting in nearly perfect ambipolar characteristics with hole and electron mobilities of 6.0 ±0.7× 10-4 and 9.7±0.4×10-4 cm2V-1s-1 respectively in PMMA: PU blend of 50:50 v%. The remarkable trend ensues from trapping of hole carriers at the dielectric/semiconductor by the -N-H- and carbonyl group (C=O) interface dipoles in the PU dielectric. The PMMA-PU blend dielectrics demonstrate excellent potentials for high-performance ambipolar OFETs, inverters, and complementary circuits.
