        (Re)visiting the past : Wounded history and traumatized memory in Qurratulain Hyder’s sita betrayed and fireflies in the mist

        Qurratulain Hyder is a major stalwart of the new generation of Urdu fiction writers. In her book Naya Afsana, she discusses psychologized realism wherein the past gives way to the present. She also depicts how a human being becomes a representation of the collective past via writings of his/her community’s collective past. Blurring every possible binary of past/present, home/world, private/public, Hyder’s neo-historical writings not only expose the limitation of her fictional world but also give it a new dimension, unlike contemporary writers who choose to focus on the external realities of the existential crisis of humanity during the early part of the twentieth century. She shows her skill by uncovering the internal realities of human experience. While giving her narratives a historical grounding, she has also made a sensorial reading of the holocaust in her narratives by focusing on the psychological interiors of affected human beings. This paper seeks to study two such fictional expositions of Hyder’s oeuvre—Sita Betrayed and Fireflies in the Mist—in order to understand how these two works help to explore the issues of trauma and memory in the context of the wounded history of partition. कुर्रतुलैन हैदर उर्दूकथा लेखकोंकी नई पीढ़ी का एक प्रमुख दिग्गज है। अपनी पुस्तक नया अफसाना में, वह मनोवैज्ञानिक यथार्थवाद की चर्चा करती है जिसमेंअतीत वर्तमान को रास्ता देता है। वह यह भी दर्शाती हैकि कैसेएक इंसान अपनेसमुदाय के सामूहिक अतीत केलेखन केमाध्यम सेसामूहिक अतीत का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। वह मानवीय अनुभव की आंतरिक वास्तविकताओंको उजागर करकेअपना कौशल दिखाती है। अपनेआख्यानोंको एक ऐतिहासिक आधार प्रदान करतेहुए, उन्होंने प्रभावित मनुष्योंकेमनोवैज्ञानिक अंदरूनी हिस्सोंपर ध्यान केंद्रित करकेइन दो आख्यानोंमेंप्रलय का एक संवेदी वाचन भी किया है। यह पेपर हैदर केकाम केदो ऐसे काल्पनिक प्रदर्शनोंका अध्ययन करनेका प्रयासकरता है- सीता विश्वासघात और धुंध में फायरफ्लाइज़- यह समझनेकेलिए कि ये दोनों कार्य विभाजन केघायल इतिहासक ेसंदर्भ में आघात और स्मृति केमुद्दोंका पता लगानेमेंकैसेमदद करतेहैं।

        Effect of III-V nitrides on performance of graphene based SPR biosensor for detection of hemoglobin in human blood sample: A comparative analysis

        In the quest for the development of highly sensitive and accurate optical biosensor for the detection of hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, theoretically we have investigated the effect of iii-v nitride on performance of graphene based SPR biosensor. To achieve the performance, computation has been performed for single metal and bi-metal individually for graphene based SPR configuration. Due to the addition of iii-v nitride layer in between metal and graphene layer in the proposed configuration, the overall sensitivity is enhanced and also detects very small volume of Hb. Finally, a comparative analysis has been carried out to establish that nearly 3:1 ratio bi-metallic combination (i.e. Ag38Au12) based SPR sensor can demonstrate better response. Additionally, introduction of indium nitride (InN) is more beneficial in comparison to other semiconductors. We expect that this study will motivate the researchers in the fabrication industry and helps physician to analyze Hb in real time. © 2016

        Purification, Characterization, and Biochemical Properties of α-Amylase from Potato

        Purification, characterization and biochemical properties of α-amylase from post harvest Bangladeshi Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) were investigated. The α-amylase was purified by successive chromatography on DEAE and CM-cellulose columns with a yield of 24.24%. SDS-PAGE showed a molecular weight of 44 kDa for the enzyme that contain 2.8% sugar. The enzyme lost total activity in the presence of the chelating agent EDTA, confirming it was an α-type amylase. The enzyme displayed optimum activity at pH 7.2 and 37˚C, with an apparent Km value of 0.26% using starch as its substrate. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by Cu2+, Fe2+ and Zn2+; moderately by Li+, Hg+ and Cd2+; and slightly by Ag+, K+, Mn2+ and Mg2+. Conversely, Fe3+ and Na+ appreciably enhanced activity, while adding calcium ion nearly doubled enzyme activity. In addition, the activity of α-amylase gradually decreased with increasing concentrations of urea. Thus, potato α-amylase is an attractive target for study to better understand the structure-function relationships of α-amylases.

        Two linear polynomials shared by an entire function and its linear differential polynomials

        In this paper, we study a uniqueness problem of entire functions that share two linear polynomials with its linear differential polynomial. We deduce two theorems which improve some previous results given by I. Lahiri \cite{5}.

      • Insertion - Deletion as Informative Characters in DNA Barcoding

        DNA barcoding involve rapidly sequencing the standardized region from the genome for species identification and this homologous sequence information plays an important role to resolve the phylogenetic issues. However in case of complex groups, incorporation of insertion and deletion (Indel) informative sites in DNA barcode sequences are becoming more important due to low substitution rate. Indels are largely ignored in phylogenetics analysis and removed from sequence alignment assigning them a missing data. We review the current trends on mining the indels analysis, focusing especially on the topics of rapidly evolving indel containing loci and methods of indel treatment for phylogenetic relationship. Among the indel coding methods, Simple indel coding is easy to implement in indels contain sequences. But, this method does not utilized the all the available information and Complex Indel Coding rules are very difficult to translate into a clearly formulate algorithm for determining the values. But this coding method suffers from internal inconsistence when a long indel has a number of shorter subset indel and triangular in equality exists. However, SIDIER software package infer evolutionary relationships based on both the indels and substitutions. SIDIER is promising software for intra and inter specific calculation in DNA barcode studies as well as to infer phylogenetic relationships.

        A CHARACTERISTICS-BASED IMPLICIT FINITEDIFFERENCE SCHEME FOR THE ANALYSIS OF INSTABILITY IN WATER COOLED REACTORS

        The objective of the paper is to analyze the thermally induced density wave oscillations in water cooled boiling water reactors. A transient thermal hydraulic model is developed with a characteristics-based implicit finite-difference scheme to solve the nonlinear mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in a time-domain. A two-phase flow was simulated with a one-dimensional homogeneous equilibrium model. The model treats the boundary conditions naturally and takes into account the compressibility effect of the two-phase flow. The axial variation of the heat flux profile can also be handled with the model. Unlike the method of characteristics analysis, the present numerical model is computationally inexpensive in terms of time and works in a Eulerian coordinate system without the loss of accuracy. The model was validated against available benchmarks. The model was extended for the purpose of studying the flow-induced density wave oscillations in forced circulation and natural circulation boiling water reactors. Various parametric studies were undertaken to evaluate the model’s performance under different operating conditions. Marginal stability boundaries were drawn for type-I and type-II instabilities in a dimensionless parameter space. The significance of adiabatic riser sections in different boiling reactors was analyzed in detail. The effect of the axial heat flux profile was also investigated for different boiling reactors.

        AN ENTIRE FUNCTION SHARING A POLYNOMIAL WITH LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL POLYNOMIALS

        The uniqueness problems on entire functions sharing at least two values with their derivatives or linear differential polynomials have been studied and many results on this topic have been obtained. In this paper, we study an entire function f(z) that shares a nonzero polynomial a(z) with $f^{(1)}(z)$, together with its linear differential polynomials of the form: $L=L(f)=a_1(z)f^{(1)}(z)+a_2(z)f^{(2)}(z)+{\cdots}+a_n(z)f^{(n)}(z)$, where the coefficients $a_k(z)(k=1,2,{\ldots},n)$ are rational functions and $a_n(z){\not{\equiv}}0$.

      • A Mitochondrial-Targeted Two-Photon Probe for Zinc Ion

        <P>We report a two-photon probe (SZn-Mito) for mitochondrial zinc ions ([Zn<SUP>2+</SUP>]<SUB>m</SUB>). This probe shows a 7-fold enhancement of two-photon-excited fluorescence in response to Zn<SUP>2+</SUP> with a dissociation constant (<I>K</I><sub arrange='stack'>d</SUB><sup arrange='stack'>TP</SUP>) of 3.1 ± 0.1 nM and pH insensitivity in the biologically relevant range, allowing the detection of [Zn<SUP>2+</SUP>]<SUB>m</SUB> in a rat hippocampal slice at a depth of 100−200 μm without interference from other metal ions through the use of two-photon microscopy.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2011/jacsat.2011.133.issue-15/ja200444t/production/images/medium/ja-2011-00444t_0004.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja200444t'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
