        ABSORBING PAIRS FACILITATING COMMON FIXED POINT THEOREMS FOR LIPSCHITZIAN TYPE MAPPINGS IN SYMMETRIC SPACES

        The purpose of this paper is to improve certain results proved in a recent paper of Soliman et al. [20]. These results are the outcome of utilizing the idea of absorbing pairs due to Gopal et al. [6] as opposed to two conditions namely: weak compatibility and the peculiar condition initiated by Pant [15] to ascertain the common fixed points of Lipschitzian mappings. Some illustrative examples are also furnished to highlight the realized improvements.

        Evaluation of Feeding Regimes to Enhance PHA Production Using Acetic and Butyric Acids by a Pure Culture of Cupriavidus necator

        In this study volatile fatty acids (VFAs), whichare by-products from anaerobic fermentations, have beenused as the carbon source for polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) production by pure culture bacteria, Cupriavidusnecator. A number of factors influence the conversionefficiencies of VFAs to PHAs including the bacterialfeeding regimes. When VFA was supplied as a single feed,it was found that concentrations higher than 2% v/v VFAled to substrate inhibition and only 18% acetic acid and12% of butyric acid was converted into PHA. This resultedin less than 65% (w/w) of PHA content within themicrobial cells. Hence, the single VFA feeding strategywas found to provide low conversion rates of VFA intopolymer. An improved feeding strategy was found to bethe use of an automatic VFA feed based on the pH controlof the medium, which led to a more continuous feedingregime. The conversion of VFA to PHA was increased byalmost 2-fold to 33 and 22% for acetic acid and butyricacid respectively, with up to 75% (w/w) of PHA resultantwithin the microbial cells.

        Short-Term Fertilization with Hairy Vetch, Compost and Chemical Fertilizer Affect Red Pepper Yield and Quality and Soil Properties

        BACKGROUND: The use of green manure and compost as organic fertilizer may increase crop yield and soil fertility due to improved soil nutrient availability and soil organic matter content (SOM). This study aimed to investigate the effects of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.) and compost application on red pepper growth, yield, fruit quality and soil health. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments were no fertilizer (CON), chemical fertilizer (CF), hairy vetch (HV), and livestock compost+HV (LC+HV). Red pepper seedlings (70 days old) were transplanted and maintained in experimental plots for 140 days. Plant dry weight, microand macronutrient contents of plants and soil chemical properties were determined. All fertilizer treatments significantly increased plant dry weight. Fruit yield was significantly highest with HV treatment. As for nutrient content, plants in HV and LC+HV treatments have significantly higher K and Ca contents than the other treatments. Regarding soil properties, HV and LC+HV application significantly altered the soil chemical properties. Significantly higher SOM was observed in HV and LC+HV treated soils. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that short-term application of hairy vetch and compost is an effective alternative to the conventional chemical fertilizer to increase fruit yield red pepper and improve soil health.

        Trap Culture Technique for Propagation of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi using Different Host Plants

        Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) spore propagation and long term maintenance is still a complicated technique for farmers. The use of AMF for their ability to promote plant growth and protect plants against pathogen attack and environmental stresses demands AMF propagation for large scale application. This study aimed to propagate AMF spores by trap culture technique and assess their ability to propagate with different host plants in a continuous plant cycle. Mycorrhizal inoculation by trap culture in maize resulted in longer shoots and roots than sudangrass plants. Increase in dry weight with higher percentage also was observed for maize plants. After first and second plant cycle, maize plants had the higher percentage of mycorrhizal response in terms of colonization and arbuscules than sudangrass. Maximum in spore count also achieved in the pots of maize plants. The results show that maize plant is more suitable host plant for AMF spore propagation and trap culture technique can be used effectively to maintain the AMF culture for long time.

        Identification of a Cryptic Type III Polyketide Synthase (1,3,6,8-Tetrahydroxynaphthalene Synthase) from Streptomyces peucetius ATCC 27952

        We identified a 1,134-bp putative type III polyketide synthase from the sequence analysis of Streptomyces peucetius ATCC 27952, named Sp-RppA, which is characterized as 1,3,6,8-tetrahydroxynaphthalene synthase and shares 33% identity with SCO1206 from S. coelicolor A3(2) and 32% identity with RppA from S. griseus. The 1,3,6,8-tetrahydrox-ynaphthalene synthase is known to catalyze the sequential decarboxylative condensation, intramolecular cyclization, and aromatization of an oligoketide derived from five units of malonyl-CoA to give 1,3,6,8-tetrahydroxynaphthalene, which spontaneously oxidizes to form 2,5,7-trihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (flaviolin). In this study, we report the in vivo expression and in vitro synthesis of flaviolin from purified gene product (Sp-RppA).

        Linkages between self-congruity, brand familiarity, perceived quality and purchase intention: A study of fashion retail brands

        The present study explores the direct and indirect impacts, mediated through perceived quality, of self-congruity and brand familiarity on purchase intention in a fashion retail branding context. Subsequently, the study examines the moderating role of gender in the relationships between self-congruity, perceived quality and brand familiarity and purchase intention. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from fashion retail store shoppers aged 18 years and above. A mall-intercept survey technique was employed to collect data in Kolkata, a metropolitan city in India. Multivariate data analysis techniques, such as exploratory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data (n ¼ 374). Results reveal that self-congruity, perceived quality and brand familiarity positively influence purchase intention. Results also indicate that the indirect impacts of self-congruity and brand familiarity on purchase intention are stronger than the direct ones. Finally, results show that gender moderates the relationships between self-congruity and purchase intention, perceived quality and purchase intention and brand familiarity and purchase intention. The academic and managerial implications of these findings are further discussed.

        Biological Parameters for Evaluating the Toxic Potency of Petroleum Ether Extract of Wattakaka volubilis in Wistar Female Rats

        Objectives: The present study investigated the toxic properties of petroleum ether extract of Wattakaka (W.) volubilis in Wistar female rats. Methods: An in vitro brine shrimp lethality bioassay was studied in A. Salina nauplii, and the lethality concentrations were assessed for petroleum ether extract of W. volubilis. A water soluble portion of the test extract was used in different concentrations from $100-1000{\mu}g/mL$ of 1 mg/mL stock solution. A 24-hours incubation with a 1-mL aliquot in 50 mL of aerated sea water was considered to calculate the percentage rate of dead nauplii with test extract administration against a potassium-dichromate positive control. The acute and the sub-acute toxicities of petroleum ether extract of W. volubilis were evaluated orally by using gavage in female Wistar rats. Food and water intake, body weight, general behavioral changes and mortality of animals were noted. Toxicity or death was evaluated following the administration of petroleum ether extract for 28 consecutive days in the female rats. Serum biochemical parameters, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, glucose, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium and ${\alpha}$-amylase levels, were measured in the toxicity evaluations. Pathological changes in isolated organs, such as the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, were also examined using hematoxylin and eosin dye fixation after the end of the test extract's administration. Results: The results of the brine-shrimp assay indicate that the evaluated concentrations of petroleum ether extract of W. volubilis were found to be non-toxic. In the acute and the sub-acute toxicity evaluations, no significant differences were observed between the control animals and the animals treated with extract of W. volubilis. No abnormal histological changes were observed in any of the animal groups treated with petroleum ether extract of W. volubilis. Conclusion: These results suggest that petroleum ether extract of W. volubilis has a non-toxic effect in Wistar female rats.

        Carpometacarpal Joint Fracture Dislocation of Second to Fifth Finger

        Background: Carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation of the second to fifth finger is a rare hand injury associated with high energy trauma. Due to severe swelling and overlapping of bones on the radiograph of wrist-hand, dislocations are missed. We reported a series of six patients with rare carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation treated with open reduction. Methods: We retrospectively studied six cases of carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation. All patients were treated with open reduction and internal fixation with Kirschner wire. Functional assessment was done with Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score (Quick DASH score) at regular intervals. Results: Average Quick DASH score was improved from 75.76 to 1.9 from 6 weeks to 18 months of duration. Of the six patients, three patients had a Quick DASH score of 0 at the end of 18 months. Conclusions: Careful hand examination and radiographic assessment is necessary to avoid missed diagnosis of carpometacarpal joint fracture dislocation. Early open reduction and internal fixation lead to excellent recovery of hand function.

        Estimation of Freight Demand at Mumbai Port using Regression and Time Series Models

        Forecasting future freight demand at a seaport is important for its planning and development. India has 13 major ports which handle 75% of the total seaport freight. Among the 13 major ports, Mumbai Port, ranked at number three in the country for the year 2013-14, handles about 11% of the total freight at major seaports in India. The focus of this paper is on developing inbound and outbound demand forecasting models for Mumbai Port. The models are developed using additive regression and time series techniques. In regression analysis economic indicators, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Crude Oil Production (CRLP) are found to be significant. The multivariate models performed better than the univariate models. The validation of time-series models resulted in error of less than 5%. Both multivariate regression and time-series models are used to forecast freight demand for the years 2014- 15 through 2017-18. The regression models are producing more optimistic forecasts than the time series models. The elasticity analysis suggested that Mumbai’s inbound freight will be growing almost with India’s GDP growth rate, the outbound freight, however, will experience slower growth than that of inbound.

        Investigation of electron beam parameters in laser wakefield acceleration using skewed laser pulse and external magnetic field

        We investigate the parameters of accelerated electron bunch in laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), when a skewed laser pulse propagates through a plasma in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Two dimensional particle-in-cell (2D-PIC) simulations have been performed under the consideration of pulse skewness parameter (sα = τl/τt) that is defined as the ratio of leading (τl) to trailing pulse edge (τt) duration. The injected charge is estimated as 23 pC for the laser strength parameter a0 = 2 when sα changes from 1 to 0.45 at a laser propagation distance of 1.5 mm with 50T magnetic field. The electron beam emittance reduces about 50% when leading edge of the pulse becomes two-fold sharper (sα = 0.45) with 50T magnetic field. Energy spread of accelerated electron bunch is also reduced from 18 to 6.6%. Hence, in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, the laser pulse skewness can significantly improve the quality of the accelerated electron bunch (i.e. charge, mean energy and emittance) in laser wakefield acceleration.
