Work Ability Index: Psychometric Testing in Aeronautical Industry Workers

2024 Safety and health at work Vol.15 No.1

Background The Work Ability Index (WAI) is an instrument that measures work ability. The wide dispersion of the WAI internationally has led to its adaptation for use in different countries. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the WAI. Methods A methodological design was used over an opportunistic sample of 233 workers in the aeronautical industry in Spain. Reliability was evaluated through internal consistency. Factorial validity, known groups, and convergent validity were tested. Results The Cronbach's alpha and item-total correlation indicated an adequate internal consistency. The confirmatory factor analysis, performed to evaluate the factorial validity, found adequate fit indices for a two-factor solution with a high correlation between the factors. Factor 1, “Subjectively estimated work ability and resources”, was composed of 3 subscales and factor 2, “Ill-health-related”, of 2 subscales. Subscales 4 and 6 had loading in both factors. Workers under 45 years of age obtained higher significant scores than older ones. Convergent validity was also evidenced since WAI was highly correlated with self-assessment of health status. Conclusions The Spanish version of the WAI has shown evidence of reliability and validity in this study, supporting its use in individual and collective health surveillance by occupational health professionals. The factorial solution that was found has previously been reported in another international context. However, further research is needed to resolve the discrepancies detected in the role of some subscales between other national and international studies. I Can Not Wear My Sunglasses: An Unusual Sarcoidosis Presentation

José Pablo Miramontes González,Virginia Velasco Tirado,Pablo González García,Marta Sánchez García,Ángeles Fidalgo Fernández 대한가정의학회 2017 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.38 No.4

A 39-year-old Caucasian man was referred to University Hospital Salamanca from a primary care unit due to the presence of an erythematous violaceous nodule at the superior portion of his nose. Physical examination indicated that the firm, fixed erythematous violaceous nodule measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and was located in-ferior to a scar on the nasal bridge. Cutaneous involvement in sarcoidosis occurs in 25% of cases. A wide range of clinical presentations of cutaneous sarcoidosis is recognized. Skin lesions are classified as either non-specific, of which erythema nodosum is the most representative and specific, or as granulomatous, which includes maculo-papular nodules, plaques, infiltrated scars, lupus pernio, ulcerations, warty lesions and erythroderma. Scar sarcoid-osis is a type of cutaneous sarcoidosis.

New role of the antidepressant imipramine as a Fascin1 inhibitor in colorectal cancer cells

        Begoña Alburquerque-González,Manuel Bernabé-García,Silvia Montoro-García,Ángel Bernabé-García,Priscila Campioni Rodrigues,Javier Ruiz Sanz,Fernando F. López-Calderón,Irene Luque,Francisco José Nicolas 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-

Serrated adenocarcinoma (SAC) is more invasive, has worse outcomes than conventional colorectal carcinoma (CRC), and is characterized by frequent resistance to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and overexpression of fascin1, a key protein in actin bundling that plays a causative role in tumor invasion and is overexpressed in different cancer types with poor prognosis. In silico screening of 9591 compounds, including 2037 approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was performed, and selected compounds were analyzed for their fascin1 binding affinity by differential scanning fluorescence. The results were compared with migrastatin as a typical fascin1 inhibitor. In silico screening and differential scanning fluorescence yielded the FDA-approved antidepressant imipramine as the most evident potential fascin1 blocker. Biophysical and different in vitro actin-bundling assays confirm this activity. Subsequent assays investigating lamellipodia formation and migration and invasion of colorectal cancer cells in vitro using 3D human tissue demonstrated anti-fascin1 and anti-invasive activities of imipramine. Furthermore, expression profiling suggests the activity of imipramine on the actin cytoskeleton. Moreover, in vivo studies using a zebrafish invasion model showed that imipramine is tolerated, its anti-invasive and antimetastatic activities are dose-dependent, and it is associated with both constitutive and induced fascin1 expression. This is the first study that demonstrates an antitumoral role of imipramine as a fascin1 inhibitor and constitutes a foundation for a molecular targeted therapy for SAC and other fascin1-overexpressing tumors.

Imaging Diagnosis of Perianal Leiomyoma: A Case Report

Enrique González-Díaz,Blanca García Cengotitabengoa,Ana Belen Dominguez Carbajo,Camino Fernández Fernández,A. 2021 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.37 No.S

A leiomyoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that usually develops where smooth muscle is present. In this report, we present the case of a 75-year-old woman who sought medical attention due to pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, and without defecatory symptoms. Both pelvic floor ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination showed a well-defined mass in the ischioanal fossa, eventually diagnosed as a perianal leiomyoma. It is considered a rare entity because of its location involving the anal sphincter and clinical features. We describe the ultrasonographic and MRI findings of this perianal leiomyoma, together with differential diagnoses and immunohistochemical characterization.

Vol.0 No.51

Effect of the In₂O₃ content on the photodegradation of the alizarin dye using TiO₂-In₂O₃ nanostructured semiconductors

        V. Rodríguez-González,F. Paraguay-Delgado,X. García-Montelongo,L.M. Torres-Martínez,R. 2008 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.9 No.6

The photocatalytic degradation of the synthetic red mordant dye alizarin on TiO2-In2O3 semiconductors as a function of the In2O3 content (1-12 wt%) was studied. High specific surface areas varying from 122 to 178 m2 g−1, depending on the In2O3 content, were obtained. A modification of the Eg band gap from 3.12 to 3.50 eV was obtained for low and high In2O3 contents. The XRD spectral patterns of the solids showed that anatase is the main crystalline titania phase. STEM-EDX chemical maps show that the In2O3 was found highly dispersed on the surface of the TiO2-In2O3 mixed oxide. By means of TEM images, nanostructured materials with crystallite sizes between 8 and 12 nm were identified. The photocatalytic activity for the alizarin degradation showed a maximum with the catalyst with 3.0 wt% of In2O3. The role of the In2O3 developing an optimal alizarin adsorption on the TiO2-In2O3 semiconductors is discussed. Computed tomography-guided Gasserian ganglion interventions for cancer-related facial pain in patients with complex anatomy: Insights and recommendations

        Ale Ismael González-Casarez1,Santamaría-Montaño Germán Gerardo,Plancarte-Sánchez Ricardo,Guillén-Núñez María Rocío,Juárez-Lemus Ángel Manuel,Hernández-Porras Berenice Carolina,Samano-García Marcela,Ro 대한마취통증의학회 2023 Anesthesia and pain medicine Vol.18 No.2

Background: The Gasserian ganglion is a well-known target for facial pain management, and patients with cancer present an anatomical challenge owing to tumor progression or treatment itself. Computed tomography (CT) is an alternative method for guiding these procedures. Methods: This was an observational retrospective analysis of patients with cancer-related facial pain who underwent CT-guided Gasserian ganglion interventions using local anesthetics, local anesthetics with steroids, phenol, and radiofrequency. Demographic, clinical, and procedure-related variables were collected from January 1, 2015, to December 30, 2018, at the National Cancer Institute. Data distribution was determined using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. A paired sample t-test (with a cut-off of P < 0.05 for statistical significance) was used for comparing outcome. Results: We observed a significant reduction in numerical rating scale (NRS) and douleur neuropathique 4 (DN4) scores from 7.6 ± 1.4 and 4.4 ± 1.4 to 3.2 ± 2.0 and 2.2 ± 1.4 points, respectively (P < 0.001). After the procedure, 70.8% of the patients were satisfied; 16.7% were very satisfied, and 12.5% were unsatisfied. No intra- or postoperative complications were observed. The most common neoplasms were head and neck tumors (83.3%).Conclusions: Our data suggest that CT guidance is an effective and safe option for managing cancer-related facial pain in patients with complex anatomy, resulting in a significant reduction in pain, high satisfaction rates, and no mechanical complications. Future research should aim to refine the role of CT guidance in multimodal pain management in this population.

Metabolic Flux Distribution and Thermodynamic Analysis of Green Fluorescent Protein Production in Recombinant Escherichia coli: The Effect of Carbon Source and CO2 Partial Pressure

        R. Axayácatl González-García,E. Ines Garcia-Peña,Edgar Salgado-Manjarrez,Juan S. Aranda-Barradas 한국생물공학회 2013 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.18 No.6

Increasing recombinant protein production yieldsfrom bacterial cultures remains an important challenge inbiotechnology. Acetate accumulation due to high dissolvedcarbon dioxide (pCO2) concentrations in the medium hasbeen identified as a factor that negatively affects suchyields. Under appropriate culture conditions, acetate couldbe re-assimilated by bacterial cells to maintain heterologousproteins production. In this work, we developed a simplifiedmetabolic network aiming to establish a reaction rate analysisfor a recombinant Escherichia coli when producing greenfluorescent protein (GFP) under controlled pCO2 concentrations. Because E. coli is able to consume both glucoseand acetate, the analysis was performed in two stages. Ourresults indicated that GFP synthesis is an independentprocess of cellular growth in some culture phases. Additionally, recombinant protein production is influenced bythe available carbon source and the amount of pCO2 in theculture medium. When growing on glucose, the increase inthe pCO2 concentration produced a down-regulation ofcentral carbon metabolism by directing the carbon fluxtoward acetate accumulation; as a result, cellular growthand the overall GFP yield decreased. However, the maximumspecific rate of GFP synthesis occurred with acetate as themain available carbon source, despite the low activity inthe other metabolic pathways. To maintain cellular functions, including GFP synthesis, carbon flux was re-distributedtoward the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the pentose phosphatepathway to produce ATP and NADH. The thermodynamicanalysis allowed demonstrating the feasibility of the simplifiednetwork for describing the metabolic state of a recombinantsystem.

Protective effects of D-005, a lipid extract from Acrocomia crispa fruits, against ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury in rats

        Ambar Oyarzábal-Yera,Sandra Rodríguez-Salgueiro,Nelson Merino-García,Leyanis Ocaña-Nápoles,Lucía González-Núñez,Licet Mena-Valdés,Zullyt Zamora-Rodríguez,José A. Medina-Pírez,Sonia Jiménez-Despaigne,V 대한신장학회 2019 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.38 No.4

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by renal ischemia/reperfusion (IR) is associated with enhanced production of reactive oxygen species in renal tissues. D-005, a lipid extract obtained from Acrocomia crispa fruit, has previously shown antioxidant effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of D-005 on renal IR-induced AKI in rats. Methods: Rats were randomized into seven groups including a negative control group (vehicle) without AKI and six groups with renal IR-induced AKI as follows: a positive control (vehicle); D-005 treatment at 25, 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg; and dexamethasone at 3 mg/kg. All treatments were orally administered as single doses 1 hour before AKI induction. Biomarkers (serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid concentrations), oxidative variables, and histopathological AKI changes were evaluated in blood and kidney tissues. Results: All D-005 doses protected against IR-induced AKI in rats by significantly decreasing biomarkers and histopathological AKI changes as assessed by reduced serum concentrations of creatinine, urea, and uric acid. In addition, all D-005 doses decreased tubular damage, as shown by fewer detached cells and casts in the tubular lumen. D-005 reversed oxidation disturbance markers by decreasing malondialdehyde and sulfhydryl group concentrations in plasma and in kidney homogenates and by increasing kidney catalase activity. Dexamethasone, the reference substance, protected against IR-induced AKI in rats by reducing biochemical and histological variables of renal damage in a similar manner. Conclusion: Administration of single oral doses of D-005 markedly and significantly protected against renal IR-induced AKI, possibly due to its known antioxidant effects.
