1995 Journal of Forest Science Vol.11 No.-

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technology, a recent approach in molecular genetics, is much usable to select the elite trees and to maximize the genetic gain in forest tree breeding program, providing a clue to determine the genetic marker-trait correlation. This review intorduces research on bark thickness and breeding strategy in Pinus elliottii, Pinus caribaea and their hybrid by Queensland Forest Service and ForBio Research Pty Ltd, University of Queensland, which employ RAPD technology. Genetic linkage map of F₁hybrids includes 186 RAPD markers and 16 linkgae groups (1641 cM long in total) and 6 quantitative trait loci are located putatively for bark thickness. Following recent research results and experiences in pine breeding programs, the forseeable stages in the application and development are proposed for marker assisted selectin; stage 1 - determination of species specific markers for genes controlling traits of commercial interest, and stage 2 - determination of marker-allele association for specific allelic variants within pure species. As pines inherit their megagametophytes from the seed parent and zygotic embryos from both male and female parents, the determination of marker-trait correlation is possible even in embryo stage, eventually making ways for the early selection of elite individuals.

Interfacial Void Segregation of Cl in Cu-Sn Micro-Connects

        Glenn Ross,Xiaoma Tao,Mikael Broas,Nikolai Mäntyoja,Vesa Vuorinen,Andreas Graff,Frank Altmann,Matthias Petzold,Mervi Paulasto-Kröckel 대한금속·재료학회 2017 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.13 No.4

A scanning transmission electron microscopy and an energy dispersiveX-ray analysis of one non-annealed and one annealed sample (423 Kfor 4 hours) was performed. The results showed small and large voidsappearing within the non-annealed and annealed samples respectively. In addition, chlorine segregated from the bulk into the voids. Ab initiocalculations determined the formation energies for dilute solutions ofchlorine and vacancies in Cu, Cu3Sn and Cu6Sn5. Results suggest thatdilute solutions energetically favor vacancies, indicating a low chlorinesolubility and a driving force for segregation.

      • Personal Finance and Housing Cooperative Model for University Employees

        Glenn Villapando,Tomas Tiu KINFORMS 2021 Management Review Vol.16 No.1

This study focuses on assessing the personal finance and the development of a housing cooperative as model for the employees in different universities. The study uses the structural equation modelling to determine the significance of individual questions in the different variables on the demographic indicators in modeling their overall contribution the respondents’ choice of a housing cooperative model. The results show that questions related to savings, expenses and debt management are significant under alpha = 0.05 towards the demographic indicators using the confirmatory factor analysis. With respect to the cross tabulation using the cluster analysis in terms of age, civil status, gender, education and income of the respondents, the results showed that model 2 is more preferred with 45.7%. Models 2 and 4 were better preferred among those respondents with income of USD 700 to USD 1,000 because the terms of repayment is from 10 to 15 years in semi-monthly payments. The polynomial regression analysis also revealed that money management has a p-value of 0.022, savings management has 0.038, and expenses and debt management has 0.034 all of them showed the significant levels with respect to the housing cooperative models and among the demographic indicators such as civil status with a p-value of 0.053, gender has 0.003, and income has 0.060 are the ones that also demonstrated a significant contribution to the respondents’ choice of a housing cooperative model. All have significant factors except with the demographic profile in education are related to the modelling of a housing cooperative.

Increased Competition and Completion of the Market in the European Union: Static and Steady State Effects

        ( Glenn W. Harrison ),( Thomas F. Rutherford ),( David G. Tarr ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 1996 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.11 No.3

We model the effects of completion of the internal market in the European Union on trade, production and market structure. The impetus for change comes from the removal of border costs, as well as increased competition from the greater ability of EU buyers to substitute among the products of different EU producers. In turn, this increased competition arises from the single market program on standards, government procurement, and dynamic learning effects. Removing the border costs results in relatively small welfare gains. Increased competition more than doubles the estimated benefits, and the steady state growth effect more than quadruples the welfare gains.

Medical Mycology in the Orient:Where Are We Going?

        Glenn.S.Bulmer 대한의진균학회 2000 대한의진균학회지 Vol.5 No.4

Medical mycology has gone through five distinct eras: 1) Fungi causing dermatophytones, 2) Discovery of rare and fatal systemic mycoses, 3) Realization that fungi cause common and subclinical diseases, 4) AIDS and the era of the compromised host, 5) Broad-spectrum antifungals with few side effects. I think that most would agree that the developed countries are in stages 4 & 5. But which one of these eras are we in now in the Orient? From my 35 years experience of working and living here I believe we still live in all of these eras. In developing countries we have a few very advanced medical centers that are on the cutting edge of technology. But, what about the rural and poorer sections of our countries? The places where modern medicine is not available at a price our citizens can afford. Are we by passing these areas in our excitement to join the biotechnology race in the world? I know that in many places this is true. National pride can cover national shame. For the remaining time I will discuss some of the diseases that we should be looking at from a different perspective. What is needed in these areas of our countries? How can we approach these problems so that all our citizens gain from our advanced technology? How can we use the modem high technology advances in medicine to the best advantage of all our people? It is very difficult to know where we are going until we know from where we came. A Tale of Two “Alliances”: Internal Threats and Networked Civil Society in Japan–US and South Korea–US Base Politics

        Glenn D. Hook,Key-young Son 인하대학교 국제관계연구소 2013 Pacific Focus Vol.28 No.1

This article examines what we call internal threats and civil alliances in connection with the two formal security alliances the United States has forged with Japan and South Korea. It investigates the causal link between the rise of internal threats to human and environmental security and the formation of civic alliances. In this process, we demonstrate the salience of networked human and environmental security actors and their articulation of anti-alliance and anti-base discourses. As case studies, the article focuses on the base relocation projects in Japan and South Korea at the heart of the formation of these civil alliances.
