      • Enantiospecific Adsorption and Decomposition of Cysteine Enantiomers on the Chiral Cu{421}R Surface

        Gladys, Michael J.,O’Donnell, Kane,Tadich, Anton,Yook, Hyunwoo,Han, Jeong Woo,Thomsen, Lars American Chemical Society 2019 The Journal of Physical Chemistry Part C Vol.123 No.34

<P>A detailed understanding of the bonding and molecular geometry characteristics of amino acids on chiral surfaces is vital toward discovering new pathways in chiral chemistry. Saturated layers of <SMALL>D</SMALL>- and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-cysteine amino acids were chemisorbed onto a chiral Cu{421}R surface. Although very little difference was observed in the molecular orientation of the two enantiomers as observed with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, a large variation in the sulfur bond scission energy was measured using a high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy thermal annealing sequence. As a result of this scission process, enantiomers of cysteine molecules completely dissociate into alaninate at temperatures separated by as much as 16 K or 0.06 eV which is one of the largest stereo effects observed on chiral metal surfaces.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Investigating the influence of audiences’ movie-viewing motives on attitude towards brand placement in movies

        Gladys Stephen,Daniel Inbaraj,Anbuudayasankar S. P.,Poongkundran T. 한국마케팅과학회 2021 마케팅과학연구 Vol.31 No.4

The purpose of the paper is to examine the role of audience movieviewing motives in influencing brand placement value and thereby attitude towards brand placement. For this study, 450 respondents were chosen as the sample size. The model was developed and tested using PLS-SEM where audience attitude towards brand placement was studied using audience movie-viewing motives and the antecedents of brand placement value. The study reveals that movie-viewing audiences with social escapism motivation develop a favourable attitude towards brand placement because of the perceived informativeness and credibility of brand placement and information motivation of audiences results in a favourable attitude towards brand placement because of perceived informativeness, entertainment and credibility of brand placement. Also, viewers who watch movie frequently are driven by social escapism motivation and less frequent group by information motivation. Future research avenues and implications for managers are further discussed.

The Use of Auricular Examination for Screening Hepatic Disorders

        Gladys Lai-Ying Cheing,Sharon Wan,Sing Kai Lo 사단법인약침학회 2009 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.2 No.1

Researches on auricular acupuncture (AA) have examined mainly its treatment effects. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy and precision of using auricular examination (AE) as a complementary diagnostic tool for screening hepatic disorders. Twenty patients suffering from liver dysfunction and 25 controls aged 18−60 years were recruited from an acute hospital. Participants were examined using three AE methods including visual inspection, electrical skin resistance measurement, and tenderness testing on the liver AA zone of both ears. Significant differences were found in visual inspection and electrical skin resistance on the AA zones between the two groups. Patients suffering from liver dysfunction tended to have at least one abnormality in skin color, appearance, presence of papules, abundance of capillary and desquamation on the ear (Relative Risk—Right ear: RR = 2.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.4, 6.2; Left: RR = 1.8, 95% CI, 1.01, 3.1). The sensitivity for visual inspection was 0.7 for both ears; specificity was 0.76 for the (R) and 0.6 for the (L) ear. The mean difference in electrical skin resistance was 4.3 MΩ (95% CI, 1.7, 6.9) for the (L) ear; 4.5 MΩ (95% CI, 1.5, 7.6) for the (R) ear. Our results suggest that malfunction of the liver appeared to be reflected by the presence of morphological changes on the liver AA zone. Visual inspection and electrical skin resistance on the liver AA zone are potentially sensitive to screen hepatic disorders. Age of Postmenopause Women: Effect of Soy Isoflavone in Lipoprotein and Inflammation Markers

Gladys Roxana Rocha Barrasa,Natalia González Cañete,Luis Emilio Valladares Boasi 대한폐경학회 2018 대한폐경학회지 Vol.24 No.3

Objectives: Menopause is associated with adverse metabolic changes in plasma lipoprotein and inflammation markers. Estrogens have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism and inflammation. Isoflavones (ISO) have structurally similar to estradiol. Our objective was analize the effect of soy-ISO on serum lipid and inflammatory markers (sP-selectin and sCD40L) in postmenopausal women. Methods: A 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention with soy-ISO (50  mg, twice daily) was conducted in 35 healthy postmenopausal women (55-72 years old). The women were divided in 2 groups: 20 were allocated to soy-ISO, and 15 to a placebo group. Results: The changes of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, Apo-A1, sP-selectin and sCD40L in 2 groups before and after 12-week treatment showed no statistical significance. In subgroup analysis, soy-ISO supplementation significantly decreased the levels of TC, LDL-C and sCD40L in women under 65 years old, and with null effects on serum lipid and inflammation markers in women over 65 years old. Conclusions: Soy-ISO did not significantly favorable effects on the lipid profile and inflammatory markers in postmenopausal women. However, in women under 65 years of age, soy-ISO significantly decreased the TC, LDL-C and sCD40L, whereas, no effects on lipid profile and inflammation markers in women over 65 years old were observed.

      • Vietnamese Health Care Providers' Preferences Regarding Recommendation of HPV Vaccines

Asiedu, Gladys B,Breitkopf, Carmen Radecki,Kremers, Walter K,Ngo, Quang V,Nguyen, Nguyen V,Barenberg, Benjamin J,Tran, Vinh D,Dinh, Tri A Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.12

Physician recommendation is an important predictor of HPV vaccine acceptance; however, physician willingness and preferences regarding HPV vaccination may be influenced by factors including patient age, vaccine type, and cost. A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of health care providers in Da Nang, Vietnam, to evaluate awareness, perceptions about HPV and HPV vaccines, and willingness to vaccinate a female patient. Willingness to vaccinate was evaluated using a full-factorial presentation of scenarios featuring the following factors: vaccine cost (free vs 1,000,000 VND), patient age (12, 16, or 22 years), and HPV vaccine type (bivalent vs quadrivalent). Responses from 244 providers were analyzed; providers had a mean age of $34{\pm}11.9$ years; a majority were female, married, and had children of their own. Thirty-six percent specialized in obstetrics/gynecology and 24% were providers in family medicine. Of the three factors considered in conjoint analysis, vaccine cost was the most important factor in willingness to vaccinate, followed by patient age, and vaccine type. The most favorable scenario for vaccinating a female patient was when the vaccine was free, the patient was 22 years of age, and the HPV4 vaccine was described. In multivariable analysis, older age, being a physician, being married, and having children were all associated with increased willingness to recommend HPV vaccination (p<0.05). Provider willingness is an important aspect of successful HPV vaccination programs; identifying preferences and biases in recommendation patterns will highlight potential areas for education and intervention.

      • One-pot Lignocellulosic Biomass Conversion into Value-Added Chemicals

( Jaya Gladys Tiffany ),김재훈 한국공업화학회 2019 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2019 No.0

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable resource and most importantly has enormous potential to be converted into various value-added chemicals for future biorefinery application. However, selective conversion of woody biomass is extremely challenging due to its complex structure. Herein, we investigated bimetallic Cu-Ru/HZSM5 catalyst for one-pot lignocellulose conversion in aqueous environment. HZSM5 provides acid sites required for consecutive depolymerization of holocellulose, dehydration, and isomerization while Cu-Ru synergistically promote hydro-genation/genolysis. Direct conversion of lignocellulose yielded up to 24.2wt% of lignin-derived monomers, cyclopentanone and methyl-cyclopentanone at 300 °C under pressurized H2 (3MPa) for 1h. This one-pot process can be a very promising and energy-efficient approach for utilization of whole lignocellulose into versatile platform chemicals in pharmaceuticals, fragrance, and polymer industries.

Surviving Covid-19 Diagnosis Among Registered Nurses: Reactions, Consequences, and Coping Mechanisms

Mbuthia Gladys,Machaki Doris,Shaibu Sheila,Kimani Rachel Wangari 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2023 Safety and health at work Vol.14 No.4

Background: To mitigate the spread of Covid-19, nurses infected with the virus were required to isolate themselves from their families and community. Isolated patients were reported to have experienced mental distress, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and suicide. Though studies have reported the psychological impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, less is known about the lived experiences of nurses who survived Covid-19 infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological approach was used to study the lived experiences of registered nurses who survived Covid-19 disease. In-depth interviews were conducted among nurses diagnosed with Covid-19 from two hospitals in Kenya between March and May, 2021. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to recruit registered nurses. Data were analyzed using Giorgi's steps of analysis. Results: The study included ten nurses between 29 and 45 years of age. Nurses' experiences encompassed three themes: diagnosis reaction, consequences, and coping. Reactions to the diagnosis included fear, anxiety, and sadness. The consequence of the diagnosis and isolation was stigma, isolation, and loneliness. Nurses coping mechanisms included acceptance, creating routines, support, and spirituality. Conclusion: Our findings aid in understanding how nurses experienced Covid-19 infection as patients and will provide evidence-based content for supporting nurses in future pandemics. Moreover, as we acknowledge the heroic contribution of frontline healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is prudent to recognize the considerable occupational risk as they balance their duty to care, and the risk of infection to themselves and their families.
