Analysis of the Purchase Behavior of Imported Organic Foodstuffs in Italy and Korea

        Giulia Maggi(Giulia Maggi ),김정호(Jung-Ho Kim) 경희대학교 국제지역연구원 2022 아태연구 Vol.29 No.1

Despite the growth of the global market for organic agri-food products, studies focusing on the consumer purchase behavior towards imported organic goods are rather limited. This paper wishes to contribute to this research area by highlighting the differences and commonalities between Italian and Korean consumers in the process of decision making towards imported organic food products. Both countries have been promoting organic farming and boosting awareness and education towards climate change and the production and consumption of eco-friendly products. The demand for organic products is expected to increase further as a result. Italy and Korea can also count on the EU-ROK Organic Equivalency Agreement which provides a big advantage in terms of trading time and costs. Overall, the factors influencing the decision making of consumers of imported organic foodstuffs are trustworthiness, product attributes, country of origin, and ethical concern. The relative relevance and preference among these factors given by the two consumer groups in the process of decision making were analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. The results suggest that Italian and Korean consumers value criteria similarly. Nevertheless, there is a difference of perception of the products’ ethical dimension and the relevance given to brand and reputation. Korean consumers are generally more brand oriented and value green image comparatively more, while to Italian consumers distance to the country of origin, and animal welfare are comparatively more important. These new insights can be useful for marketers wishing to enter or strengthen their position in the Korean and / or the Italian markets. Finally, the conclusions drawn can serve as a basis for further research about purchase behavior towards imported organic products.

Pressurized liquid extraction of brewer’s spent grain: Kinetics and crude extracts characterization

Giulia Herbst,Fabiane Hamerski,Massimiliano Errico,Marcos L. Corazza 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.102 No.-

In this study, extraction yield of valuable compounds from brewer’s spent grain (BSG) using pressurizedliquid extraction (PLE) was investigated varying temperature, solvent type, and flow rate at a constantpressure. The results were compared with Soxhlet extractions using the total phenolic compounds(TPC), total flavonoid compounds (TFC), antioxidant activity (AA), reducing sugars (RS), and total reducingsugars (TRS) as indices. The highest PLE extraction yield was 20.1 wt%, at 120 C, 2 mL/min using ethanolto water volume ratio of 0.5, at 10 MPa. The TPC, TFC, and AA content were favored by water and water/ethanol extractions and temperature increase. The highest AA was obtained with water at 120 C and4 mL/min achieving 9944, 4769 and 4096 mmol TE/100 g of BSG extract, respectively. PLE was capableof present high extraction yields maintaining the RS and TRS in the BSG matrix. In addition, BSG wasdefatted with compressed propane before the extraction with PLE, showing that compressed propaneis highly efficient in recovering the lipid fraction from BSG. The results demonstrated a great potentialof water and different EtOH/Water solvent ratio at pressurized conditions for obtaining biocompoundsof BSG in a crude extract with expressive biological activity.

      • DEALING WITH FRUSTRATION? LET CONSUMERS WRITE!

Giulia Miniero,Michael Gibbert 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.7

Consumers like talking and writing about products, sharing experiences and thoughts, especially if these are negative or disappointing. Expressing their frustration help them digesting the unsatisfactory feeling. Companies, therefore, need to find ways to help consumers deal with their frustration but not impacting their overall attitude toward the product. The present study investigates the relative superiority of complaining vs. a new tool for airing frustrations with products, the expressive writing paradigm (Pennebacker 1997). Across two experimental between-subject studies, we find support that consumers who write their disappointment expressively have an higher product evaluation compared to customers that do not express their disappointment (Study 1). Moreover, as Study 2 shows, writing expressively brings consumers to have an higher product evaluation than complaint writing.

ToleRability of BevacizUmab in elderly Ovarian cancer patients (TURBO study): a case-control study of a real-life experience

        Giulia Amadio,Claudia Marchetti,Emanuele Rocco Villani,Domenico Fusco,Francesca Stollagli,Carolina Bottoni,Mariagrazia Distefano,Giuseppe Colloca,Giovanni Scambia,Anna Fagotti 대한부인종양학회 2020 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.31 No.1

Objective: Bevacizumab maintenance following platinum-based chemotherapy is an effective treatment for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), both in primary and recurrent disease. Our aim was to identify criteria to select elderly patients who can safely benefit from bevacizumab addition. Methods: This is a case-control study on patients with primary or recurrent EOC who received platinum-based chemotherapy plus bevacizumab, between January 2015 and December 2016. Patient characteristics, treatment details and adverse events were reviewed and analyzed in 2 settings: younger (<65 years, group 1) and elderly (≥65 years, group 2). A binary logistic model was applied to correlate clinical variables and severe (grade ≥3) toxicity risk. Results: Overall, 283 patients with EOC were included, with 72 (25.4%) older patients compared with 211 (74.6%) younger women. Bevacizumab had been administered to 234 patients (82.7%) as first-line treatment and in 49 (17.3%) with recurrent disease. At diagnosis, elderly patients presented with at least one comorbidity and were taking at least 1 medication in 84.7% and 80.6% of the cases respectively, compared with correspondingly 47.4% and 37.4% in group 1 (p<0.001). Nonetheless, the occurrence of serious (grade ≥3) adverse events did not increase among the older group. Creatinine serum levels >1.1 g/dL, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤60 mL/min, ≥3 comorbidities were independently associated with a higher severe toxicity. Conclusions: Elderly patients with EOC can safely be treated with bevacizumab; factors other than age, as higher creatinine serum levels, eGFR and number of comorbidities should be considered to better estimate bevacizumab-related toxicity risk.

PEGylated polylactide (PLA) and poly (lactic‑co‑glycolic acid) (PLGA) copolymers for the design of drug delivery systems

Giulia Bonacucina,Diego Romano Perinelli,Marco Cespi,Giovanni Filippo Palmieri 한국약제학회 2019 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.49 No.4

Background PEGylated polylactide (PLA) and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) copolymers are biodegradable polyesters, widely employed in the last decades for the design of drug delivery systems such as polymeric hydrogels and nanocarriers (e.g. micelles and nanoparticles). The coupling with polyethylene glycol (PEG) offers some advantages with the respect to PLA and PLGA, including a higher hydrophilicity and a prolonged retention time for nanoparticulate systems, as well as the possibility of preparing thermoresponsive hydrogels. A large variety of pharmacologically active-compounds (small molecules, natural compounds or biomolecules such as proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides) has been formulated and delivered through PEGylated PLA or PLGA copolymers. Due to the high number of papers recently published about the use of these biodegradable copolymers in drug delivery, PEGylated PLA or PLGA copolymers are being still attractive. Their potential applications have been also broadened by the developing of ligand-functionalized copolymers, enabling an “active drug targeting” for nanoparticulate systems. Area covered The present review summarizes the recent advances in drug delivery systems based on PEGylated PLA or PLGA copolymers, focusing on self-assembled micelles and thermoresponsive hydrogels as well as nanoparticles. A particular consideration has been given to functionalized PEGylated PLA/PLGA nanoparticles for active drug delivery. Expert opinion Further advances in the design of PEGylated PLA/PLGA delivery systems will be beneficial for an improved drug release and targeting in the light of novel personalised therapeutic strategies.

Chemopreventive Potential of Apple Pulp Callus Against Colorectal Cancer Cell Proliferation and Tumorigenesis

        Giulia Baldelli,Mauro De Santi,Daniele Fraternale,Giorgio Brandi,Mirco Fanelli,Giuditta Fiorella Schiavano 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.6

This study focused on the evaluation of the chemopreventive potential of tissue in vitro culture of the “Mela Rosa Marchigiana” apple (MRM callus) that allows the amplification of secondary metabolites. The MRM pulp and MRM callus chemopreventive potential was evaluated in terms of antiproliferative activity, inhibition of tumorigenesis in soft agar cultures, cell cycle and western blotting analyses in CaCo2 and LoVo colon cancer cell lines and in JB6 promotion-sensitive (JB6 P+) cells. MRM callus induced a strong concentration-dependent inhibition of colon cancer cell proliferation and suppressed 12-o-tetra-decanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate-induced tumorigenesis of JB6 P+ cells in soft agar cultures. MRM callus inhibited the phosphorylation of JNK, p38, and eIF2alpha. Our data indicate that the MRM callus exerts a good antiproliferative and antitumorigenic potential through the MAP kinase inhibition and could provide natural compounds with chemopreventive properties.

The status of women weavers as heritage bearers: Accounts of social transformation and empowerment in the province of Canchis, Cuzco, Peru

Giulia Avanza, MSc 국립민속박물관 2021 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.16 No.1

UNESCO includes heritage textile arts and the specific skills and knowledge required for their production among the traditional crafts that constitute the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. This is due to the significant links that exist between weaving traditions, local societal structures and the history and shared memories of local communities. This article, which originates in extensive fieldwork and ethnographic participant observation in the Canchis province, in the region of Cuzco, Peru, will illustrate the tradition of loom textile-making in the area, highlighting the interdependence among intangible cultural heritage, traditional ecological knowledge and local socio-economic dynamics. A number of observed relevant factors affecting the status of women weavers as heritage bearers (rigid social structures, familial organisation, relation between genders and institutional support) will be addressed in further detail to shed light on the reciprocal interactions and the tensions between cultural preservation and social inequality in relation to heritage textile art, and to reflect on the role of female weavers, on their working conditions and on their autonomy and social status within and outside their communities of origin. In the context of pressing modernisation and threatening homogenisation of production, this article identifies a number of conditions that contribute to the resilience of this form of intangible cultural heritage, preserving this creative legacy while empowering women to overcome detrimental social dynamics.

Codeine Precipitating Serotonin Syndrome in a Patient in Therapy with Antidepressant and Triptan

        Giulia Milano,Werner Maria Natta,Alfredo Bello,Antonietta Martelli,Francesca Mattioli 대한정신약물학회 2017 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.15 No.3

The serotonin syndrome is a serioius medical condition due due to an intensive stimulation of setonin receptors. It is a rare, but severe, consequence of interaction between serotomimetic agents. This is a report of a 70-year-old woman steadily in therapy with venlafaxine and rizatriptan for migraine and major depressive syndrome. She was admitted to neurology unit for decreased light reflex with miotic pupils, global hyperreflexia, tremor, anxiety, ataxia and incoordination. The patient was diagnosed as a probable case of serotonin syndrome due to a pharmacological interaction between venlafaxine and rizatriptan trigged by opioid intake. In this paper, the development of syntomatology, the clinical examination and the possible pharmacokinetics explanation were carefully discussed and analysed.
