Carbon Dioxide Mitigation by Microalgal Photosynthesis
Lee Jeong, Mi-Jeong,Gillis, James M.,Hwang, Jiann-Yang Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.12
Algal growth studies of Chlorella strains were conducted in a batch mode with bench type experiments. Carbon dioxide fixation rates of the following green microalgae were determined: Chlorella sp. H84, Chlorella sp. A2, Chlorella sorokiniana UTEX 1230, Chlorella vulgaris, and Chlorella pyrenoidosa. C. vulgaris, among other strains of microalgae, showed the highest growth rate (1.17 optical density/5 days). Cultivating conditions for C. vulgaris that produced the highest growth rate were at concentrations of 243 ${\mu}g\;CO_2$/mL, 10 mM ammonia, and 1 mM phosphate, with an initial pH range of 7-8.

Chronic HBV infection is the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatic cancer, but the individual responses toward HBV infection are highly variable, ranging from asymptomatic to chronic active hepatitis B inflammation. In this study, we hypothesized that the different individual responses to HBV infection was associated with differences in HBV-specific CD8+ T cell-mediated inflammation and cytotoxicity. Blood samples were collected from subjects with asymptomatic HBV-infection, subjects undergoing active chronic HBV flares (active CHB), and subjects with HBV-infected hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC). By tetramer staining, we found that all three groups had similar frequencies of HBVspecific CD8+ T cells. However, after HBV peptide stimulation, the HBV-specific CD8+ T cells in asymptomatic subjects had significantly stronger interferon gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and CD107a expression than those in active CHB and HBV-HCC patients. Examination of surface marker expression revealed that the PD-1-Tim-3- double-negative cell population was the main contributor to HBV-specific inflammation. In active CHB patients and HBV-HCC patients, however, the frequencies of activated PD-1-Tim-3- cells were significantly reduced. Moreover, the serum HBV DNA titer was not correlated with the frequencies of HBV-specific CD8+ T cells but was inversely correlated with the frequencies of IFN-g-expressing and CD107a-express cells in response to HBV stimulation. Together, our data demonstrated that the status of HBVspecific CD8+ T cell exhaustion was associated with different clinical outcomes of chronic HBV infection.

In this paper, we described a technique for improving diagnostic performance using deep learning for Oligodendroglioma, one of brain tumors. Certain diseases, such as brain tumors, have a data imbalance problem because the number of patients in each hospital is not uniform. To solve this problem, we intended to introduce a data augmentation technique using GAN, a deep learning generation model. The experiment compared the training performance of the two groups with the dataset without fake data and the dataset with additional fake data. As a result, we showed a slight improvement in training performance and training stability.
Carbon nanotube active-matrix backplanes for conformal electronics and sensors.
Takahashi, Toshitake,Takei, Kuniharu,Gillies, Andrew G,Fearing, Ronald S,Javey, Ali American Chemical Society 2011 Nano letters Vol.11 No.12
<P>In this paper, we report a promising approach for fabricating large-scale flexible and stretchable electronics using a semiconductor-enriched carbon nanotube solution. Uniform semiconducting nanotube networks with superb electrical properties (mobility of 20 cm2 V(-1) s(-1) and ION/IOFF of 10(4)) are obtained on polyimide substrates. The substrate is made stretchable by laser cutting a honeycomb mesh structure, which combined with nanotube-network transistors enables highly robust conformal electronic devices with minimal device-to-device stochastic variations. The utility of this device concept is demonstrated by fabricating an active-matrix backplane (128 pixels, physical size of 64 cm2) for pressure mapping using a pressure sensitive rubber as the sensor element.</P>

Recently, paint to image style transfer that converts a painting image into a photo-realistic image has been researched. This method requires hundreds of thousands to millions of datasets. The more datasets help you get the higher quality image, but it takes a lot of time to train. One way to solve this problem is using a single image as input. Approaches of previous single image GAN methods were limited to texture images and they were conditional. So, they still do not work well to learn the distribution of datasets made up of various classes. However, SinGAN uses a pyramid of fully convolutional GANs to learn the patch distribution at a different scale of the image, which can maintain the fine textures of the training image. Also, since it is unconditional, it can be applied not only to texture images, but also to general natural images. So even if you use a single image as input, you can get a photo-realistic image.
Effects of Tourniquet Use on Quadriceps Function and Pain in Total Knee Arthroplasty

purpose: A pneumatic tourniquet is commonly used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to improve surgical field visualisation but may result in quadriceps muscle ischaemia. We performed this study to analyse the effect of the tourniquet on recovery following TKA. materials and methods: A prospective randomised single-blinded trial was undertaken to examine the effect of the tourniquet on post-operative pain, swelling, blood loss, quadriceps function and outcome following TKA. Twenty patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomised to tourniquet or no tourniquet groups. Quadriceps function was assessed using surface electromyography (EMG) during active knee extension. results: The no tourniquet group had significantly less pain in the early post-operative period compared to the tourniquet group. There was no difference in Oxford knee score, range of motion, or thigh and knee swelling up to 12 months post-operatively. Quadriceps function, measured by surface EMG, was compromised for the first six months post-surgery by tourniquet use. The radiological cement mantle at the bone prosthesis interface at 12-month follow-up was not affected by the absence of a tourniquet. conclusions: We believe that it is safe and beneficial for our patients to routinely perform TKA without a tourniquet.
