      • A Study on Native Language and Teachers in English Language Classrooms in South Korea

Casey Gerard McKeever 부산외국어대학교 외국어연구소 2015 외국어연구 Vol.28 No.-

A Study on Native Language and Teachers in English Language Classrooms in South Korea Casey Gerard McKeever The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of Korean university students towards their native language and English language teachers, both of which have been important factors in recent Korean government policy. To accomplish this, the students participated in a survey and their answers were then quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. These participants were selected in particular because they were studying to become teachers in public elementary schools, and approximately half of them were studying to become English language teachers. Regardless of their course of study, many of the participants’ attitudes reflect the some of the ideals that studies have shown to be deeply rooted in English language teaching both in Korea and worldwide. Amongst a majority of the students there remains bias in favor of native English speaker teachers and against non-native speaker teachers. This is especially disconcerting since more than half of the respondents in this study are training to be English teachers themselves. Furthermore, many of the students show a disregard for the usefulness of their native tongue as a second language learning resource. Current research, however, details numerous advantages of using students’ first language in second language teaching. The responses of students who were studying to become English teachers indicated more favorability towards the native language as a resource. This suggests that along with effective government policy, education is necessary to counter the immense influence of colonial ideologies and globalization on English language teaching. Recent studies have linked Korea’s active response to globalization to the immersion-style practices that are detrimental to the Korean language, Korean teachers of English, and the socioeconomic status of Korean families.

A CLASSIFICATION OF UNIQUELY DIFFERENT TYPES OF NUCLEAR FISSION GAS BEHAVIOR

Gerard Leonard Hofman,YEON SOO KIM 한국원자력학회 2005 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.37 No.4

The behavior of fission gas in all major types of nuclear fuel has been reviewed with an emphasis on more recentlydiscovered aspects. It is proposed that the behavior of fission gas can be classified in a number of characteristic types thatoccur at a high or low operating temperature, and/or at high or low fissile burnup. The crystal structure and microstructure ofthe various fuels are the determinant factors in the proposed classification scheme. Three types of behavior, characterized byanisotropic -U, high temperature metallic -U, and cubic ceramics, are well-known and have been extensively studied in theliterature. Less widely known are two equally typical low temperature kinds: one associated with fission induced grain refinementand the other with fission induced amorphization. Grain refinement is seen in crystalline fuel irradiated to high burnup at lowtemperatures, whereas breakaway swelling is observed in amorphous fuel containing sufficient excess free-volume. Amorphousfuel, however, shows stable swelling if insufficient excess free-volume is available during irradiation.

Health Effects of Underground Workspaces cohort: study design and baseline characteristics

        Gerard Dunleavy,Thirunavukkarasu Sathish,Nuraini Nazeha,Michael Soljak,Nanthini Visvalingam,Ram Bajpai,Hui Shan Yap,Adam C,Roberts,Thuan Quoc Thach,André,Comiran Tonon,Chee Kiong Soh,Georgios Ch 한국역학회 2019 Epidemiology and Health Vol.41 No.-

The development of underground workspaces is a strategic effort towards healthy urban growth in cities with ever-increasing land scarcity. Despite the growth in underground workspaces, there is limited information regarding the impact of this environment on workers’ health. The Health Effects of Underground Workspaces (HEUW) study is a cohort study that was set up to examine the health effects of working in underground workspaces. In this paper, we describe the rationale for the study, study design, data collection, and baseline characteristics of participants. The HEUW study recruited 464 participants at baseline, of whom 424 (91.4%) were followed-up at 3 months and 334 (72.0%) at 12 months from baseline. We used standardized and validated questionnaires to collect information on socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics, medical history, family history of chronic diseases, sleep quality, health-related quality of life, chronotype, psychological distress, occupational factors, and comfort levels with indoor environmental quality parameters. Clinical and anthropometric parameters including blood pressure, spirometry, height, weight, and waist and hip circumference were also measured. Biochemical tests of participants’ blood and urine samples were conducted to measure levels of glucose, lipids, and melatonin. We also conducted objective measurements of individuals’ workplace environment, assessing air quality, light intensity, temperature, thermal comfort, and bacterial and fungal counts. The findings this study will help to identify modifiable lifestyle and environmental parameters that are negatively affecting workers’ health. The findings may be used to guide the development of more health-promoting workspaces that attempt to negate any potential deleterious health effects from working in underground workspaces.

      • Mobile Telephony: The Influencing Factors of Using A Mobile Phone by Undergraduate and Graduate Students in Three Global Countries

        Gerard Fillion,Jean-Pierre Booto Ekionea,Aure,lia Nicole Nguejo,Kathy Gonye KINFORMS 2020 Management Review Vol.15 No.1

Individual adoption of technology has been studied extensively in the workplace, but far less attention has been paid to adoption of technology in the household (Brown & Venkatesh, 2005). Obviously, mobile phone is now integrated into our daily life. Indeed, according to International Data Corporation (IDC), the market reached 1.472 billion mobile phones sold in the world in 2017 (ZDNet, 2018). In addition, according to Statista, there was 4.77 billion mobile phone users worldwide in 2017 while the population was reaching 7.6 billion people, and there will be 5.07 billion mobile phone users worldwide by 2019 (Statista, 2018). The purpose of this study is then to pursue the investigation on the determining factors that make such people around the world are so using the mobile phone. On the basis of the model of acceptance of technology in household (MATH) developed by Brown and Venkatesh (2005) to verify the determining factors in intention to adopt a computer in household by American people, this study extends this moderator-type research model to examine the determining factors in the use of mobile phone in household by undergraduate and graduate students from four universities within three countries over the world. Data were randomly gathered from 750 undergraduate and graduate students from Yaounde in Cameroon, Kinshasa in Congo, and New Brunswick in Canada who own a mobile phone. Data analysis was performed using the structural equation modeling software Partial Least Squares (PLS). The results revealed, among others, that two-third of the variables examined in the study, including the three new variables we added to the Brown and Venkatesh’s research model, showed to be determining factors in the use of mobile phone by undergraduate and graduate students.
