Effective modeling of beams with shear deformations on elastic foundation
Gendy, A.S.,Saleeb, A.F. Techno-Press 1999 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.8 No.6
Being a significant mode of deformation, shear effect in addition to the other modes of stretching and bending have been considered to develop two finite element models for the analysis of beams on elastic foundation. The first beam model is developed utilizing the differential-equation approach; in which the complex variables obtained from the solution of the differential equations are used as interpolation functions for the displacement field in this beam element. A single element is sufficient to exactly represent a continuous part of a beam on Winkler foundation for cases involving end-loadings, thus providing a benchmark solution to validate the other model developed. The second beam model is developed utilizing the hybrid-mixed formulation, i.e., Hellinger-Reissner variational principle; in which both displacement and stress fields for the beam as well as the foundation are approxmated separately in order to eliminate the well-known phenomenon of shear locking, as well as the newly-identified problem of "foundation-locking" that can arise in cases involving foundations with extreme rigidities. This latter model is versatile and indented for utilization in general applications; i.e., for thin-thick beams, general loadings, and a wide variation of the underlying foundation rigidity with respect to beam stiffness. A set of numerical examples are given to demonstrate and assess the performance of the developed beam models in practical applications involving shear deformation effect.

This manuscript reports the synthesis of two series of Mannich Bases 3-12 and 21-40 obtained respectively by the reaction of either 2- ethoxycarbonylindoles 1-2 or 5H-pyridazino [4,5-b]indoles 17-20 as a substrate with formalin and the appropriate $2^{\circ}C$amines under the suitable Mannich conditions. fourteen of the synthesized Mannich basese were screened as antihypetensive agents in normotensive anesthetized rats. The effect of compound 4 in normotensive anesthetized dogs was also studied.

Background: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired autoimmune disease characterized by abnormalities of T cells subsets. Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is a co-signaling inhibitory molecule in T cells that is involved in many autoimmune diseases.Purpose: Here we aimed to measure changes in PD-1 expression and serum interferon-γ (IFN-γ) levels before and 1 month after treatment in pediatric patients with newly diagnosed ITP.Methods: We measured PD-1+ CD4+ T cells percentages using flow cytometry and the serum IFN-γ levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 40 pediatric patients with ITP and 20 healthy controls. Results: Compared with healthy controls, the PD-1+ CD4+ T cells percentages and serum IFN-γ levels were significantly higher in ITP patients before and 1 month after therapy. A correlation study revealed that PD-1+ CD4+ T cells percentage was negatively associated with platelet count and positively associated with IFN-γ level in patients with ITP. Furthermore, serum IFN-γ levels were significantly decreased in patients after treatment, but no significant change was detected in the percentage of PD-1+ CD4+ T cells before or 1 month after therapy. Conclusion: PD-1+ CD4+ T cells expression and IFN-γ levels were increased in patients with ITP. These preliminary data suggest a potential role of PD-1+ CD4+ T cells as mediators of ITP. We also found a correlation between PD-1+ CD4+ T cells and both platelet counts and IFN-γ levels. These findings suggest a potential role of PD-1+ CD4+ T cells and IFN-γ in the pathogenesis of ITP. Further studies investigating PD-1 expression in different T-cell subsets, serum IFN-γ concentrations, and antiplatelet antibodies levels over a longer duration after therapy initiation could delineate the precise role of PD-1 in ITP pathogenesis. Consequently, novel nontraditional therapeutic strategies for ITP patients may become available.

We propose a new membrane of cellulose acetate/graphene/Ag nanoparticles and/or Cu nanorods (CA/G/Ag–Cu) composite, which improved the membrane desalination and biofouling simultaneously using membrane technology. The membrane was prepared from casting polymer dope solution containing 25 wt.% in acetone as solvent with different concentrations of graphene dispersed on it Ag:Cu at 18 °C. The membrane was then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and further tested for the separation of saline solutions (5 g/L and 10 g/L NaCl) by reverse osmosis system. The release of silver- and copper-nanoparticles from the membrane was monitored in a batch experiment by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The biofouling effects of addition G/nano-(Ag–Cu) on membrane performance were investigated against Gram +ve and Gram −ve bacterial test organisms. Membranes were assayed with an agar culture medium and by immersing in bacterial suspension. Bacterial activities were observed by inhibition zones formation and investigating biofilm formation by SEM. The reference membrane (without additions) had no antibacterial activity and bacterial growth was found on the membrane surfaces, while CA/G/nano-(Cu–Ag) membrane had shown antibacterial activity. Permeability tests showed a vast improvement of water flux and salt rejection.

Steady flow simulations through a high pressure turbine guide vanes were carried out. The main objective of the present work is to study the performance of turbulence models on the steady flow prediction from aerodynamic and aerothermal points of view. Three turbulence models were compared, namely SST, k-ω and ω-Reynolds stress models. The laminar results were also compared. The comparison was done with emphasis on the isentropic Mach number and heat transfer coefficient along the blade, and total pressure loss in the wake region. The calculated isentropic Mach number showed reasonable agreement with experimental data along the blade surface for all three turbulent models. For the total pressure loss in the wake region, ω-Reynolds stress model showed the best agreement with the experimental data. However, unless using an appropriate transition model, the heat transfer coefficients of all three turbulent models showed poor agreement with experimental data.
Elliptic Trailing Edge for a High Subsonic Turbine Cascade
Mahmoud M. El-Gendi,Mohammed K. Ibrahim,Koichi Mori,Yoshiaki Nakamura 한국항공우주학회 2008 한국항공우주학회 학술발표회 논문집 Vol.- No.-
The flow through a turbine cascade was numerically simulated for an exit isentropic Mach number of 0.79 and a Reynolds number of 2.8 × 10? The objective of the present study is to improve the base pressure distribution at this high subsonic Mach number. Calculation was carried out using the in-house numerical code, where the 2nd order Roe scheme for inviscid numerical fluxes. the 2nd order implicit dual lime method for time integration, and Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation for turbulence are employed. Time-averaged pressure distributions through the cascade have been presented with more attention paid to the trailing edge region. Calculated results show the non-uniform pressure distribution along the trailing edge, which is close to experimental data and different from almost uniform pressure distributions at moderate subsonic Mach numbers. To improve the trailing edge pressure distribution, we use an elliptic trailing edge instead of a circular one as a proposal for a new, practical trailing edge shape. The elliptic trailing edge make not only the trailing edge pressure distribution uniform but also increase the average base pressure by 5.26%.
