Derivation and Differentiation of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Osteoarthritis Patients

        Mamdooh Gari,Haneen Alsehli,Abdullah Gari,Mohammed Abbas,Mohammed Alkaff,Mohammed Abuzinadah,Fatin Al-Sayes,Mazin Gari,Ashraf Dallol,Adel M Abuzenadah,Kalamegam Gauthaman 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2016 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.13 No.6

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a degenerative joint disease caused by the progressive reduction of the articular cartilage surface that leads to reduced joint function. Cartilage degeneration occurs through gradual loss in extracellular matrix components including type II collagen and proteoglycan. Due to limited inherent self repair capacity of the cartilage, the use of cell-based therapies for articular cartilage regeneration is considered promising. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are multipotent cells and are highly capable of multilineage differentiation which render them valuable for regenerative medicine. In this study, BM-MSCs were isolated from OA patients and were characterized for MSC specific CD surface marker antigens using flowcytometry and their differentiation potential into adipocytes, osteocytes and chondrocytes were evaluated using histological and gene expression studies. BM-MSCs isolated from OA patients showed short spindle shaped morphology in culture and expressed positive MSC related CD markers. They also demonstrated positive staining with oil red O, alizarin red and alcian blue following differentiation into adipocytes, osteocytes and chondrocytes, respectively. In addition, chodrogenic related genes such as collagen type II alpha1, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, fibromodulin, and SOX9 as well as osteocytic related genes such as alkaline phosphatase, core-binding factor alpha 1, osteopontin and RUNX2 runt-related transcription factor 2 were upregulated following chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation respectively. We have successfully isolated and characterized BM-MSCs from OA patients. Although BM-MSCs has been widely studied and their potential in regenerative medicine is reported, the present study is the first report in our series of experiments on the BMSCs isolated from OA patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Pop-up retailing: Integrating objectives and activity stereotypes

        Gary Warnaby,Varvara Kharakhorkina,Charlotte Shi,Margherita Corniani 한국마케팅과학회 2015 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.6 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of pop-up retailing, which is, to date, a relatively neglected element in the retailing literature. Pop-up retailing can be defined in terms of an experientially orientated consumer – brand interaction, taking place within a particular, albeit temporary, “territory”. Given the limited extant academic literature, the paper briefly outlines antecedents that provide a broader theoretical context for the study of pop-up retailing, in particular experiential marketing and customer experience management, retail environments and atmospherics. It then moves on to identify more strategic objectives that pop-up retail activities could potentially contribute toward achieving, conceptualized in terms of communicational, experiential, transactional and testing objectives, before identifying four different general stereotypes of pop-up retailing. These are the product showcase/ anthology, the brand pantheon, the tribal gathering and the market tester. These objectives and stereotypes are not mutually exclusive, and their interaction is highlighted via an exploratory case study of one pop-up activity developed by the fashion brand Marisota, held in April 2014 in Manchester, UK. The paper proposes an initial classificatory schema of pop-up activity and concludes with an agenda for future research in this relatively neglected area.

Pop-up retailing objectives and activities: A retrospective commentary

2019 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.10 No.3

This paper provides a retrospective commentary on a paper, “Popup retailing: integrating objectives and activity stereotypes”. Drawing on both published work and our empirical research carried out subsequently, the paper considers developments relating to pop-up retailing in both industry practice and perceptions and the academic literature, to ascertain how this flexible and malleable concept might develop into the future. It begins by elaborating further understanding of the characteristics of the pop-up from the perspectives of practitioners, in temporal and experiential terms, before considering the broader interrelated strategic and spatial implications arising. The study here concludes by identifying avenues for further research, including: the nature of the potential interaction between pop-ups and other retail activities; the context(s) within which such interaction could occur; how it might be facilitated; and possible criteria for evaluating effectiveness.

      • Pediatric Liver Transplantation Experience in Kazakhstan

        ( Gari Kuttymuratov ),( Damir Zhenalayev ),( Dulat Mustafinov ),( Aiymkul Ashimkhanova ) 대한간학회 2016 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2016 No.1

Aims: The aim is to analyze the first results of pediatric liver transplantation experience. Currently in Kazakhstan on the waiting list for liver transplantation there are approximately 22 children various congenital or acquired liver pathologies. Most of the children with end stage liver disease need a donor organ transplant before the age of 1 year old. During the period from 2012 to 2015 at National Research Center for Maternity and Child in Astana, there are total of 6 pediatric living donor liver transplantations were performed in Kazakhstan. In all cases, the left lateral segment of the donor liver was allocated for transplantation. Age of recipients ranged from 5 months up to 6 year old. The donors are close relatives of the recipient, their age ranged from 24 to 36 years. In 5 out of 6 cases in children under the age of 1 year old the etiology of liver cirrhosis was biliary atresia. In a 6 y.o. child the underlying cause of cirrhosis was autoimmune hepatitis. All liver transplantation performed with the participation of foreign experts from India, Turkey, and The Republic of Belarus. Methods: Prospective study from the start of the first pediatric liver transplantation. Results: Postoperative complications were not observed in donors. One child under the age of 5 months had a PO-complication as hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT). The surgical actions to fix the vascular damage were unsuccessful and the child was taken by sanitary aviation to hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, where he had another liver transplantation from a living donor. In the remaining five recipients there were no complications observed, and they discharged from the hospital. Due to the severe shortage of donors, the mortality rate of children on a waiting list is up to 54%. Conclusions: The lack of experience of local transplant surgeons in carrying out highly advanced surgeries in young children, forcing patients to carry out similar operations in foreign clinics by governmental funding or on their own expense. The most common surgery for liver transplantation Kazakhstani children held in South Korean hospitals, Germany, Turkey, India. On behalf of our colleagues and patients we want to thank our friends - colleagues from South Korea, Turkey, India, for their help and support in the development of transplantation in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Vol.38 No.1-1

      • Social Competence: An Important Educational Objective?

2007 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.1 No.1

Abstract. Because early childhood educators have been entrusted with the responsibility of promoting children S social competence, it is important to consider the meaning of this concept and its value as an educational objec - tive. Accordingly, three principal themes are addressed in this article. First, the construct of social competence is examined with the aim of explicating assumptions about its locus, its modes of expression or manifestations, and the conditions under which children s performance can be considered competent. Second, the value of social competence as an educational objective is appraised in light of what has been learned, empirically, about its role in chil - dren s development. Third, findings from research on the precursors of social competence are reviewed as a means of identifYing resources that may useful for promoting social competence in young children.

Teach Earlier, Expect Later: An Essay on Pedagogical Patience and Propaedeutic Appropriateness

2013 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.19 No.2

The author begins by restating his suggestion of 1982 to uncouple adults` efforts to teach from their expectations for soon-following mastery by children. He then associates that teach earlier, expect later proposal with a longstanding tradition in early childhood education of pedagogical patience. Tying that tradition to an ancient and even broader educational practice, propaedeutics, he proposes and discusses propaedeutic appropriateness as a standard by which to both legitimate and evaluate propaedeutic activities.
