The beetle Dinoderus porcellus Lesne is a serious storage insect pest that causes important losses by destroying stocks of yam chips. In the aim to found an alternative control method to the use of synthetic insecticides for its management, the virulence of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (isolate Bb115) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin (isolate Met 31) against adults of D. porcellus was evaluated under laboratory conditions (25 ± 2 ◦ C and 70 ± 5% RH). Then, the effectiveness of the most virulent entomopathogenic fungus as biological agent against D. porcellus was assessed under farmer storage conditions. For each entomopathogenic fungus isolate, four conidial concentration (0, 10 5 , 10 7 , and 10 9 conidia/mL) at the dose of 1 µL were inoculated topically on D. porcellus adults (3–5 days old). Observations focused on insect mortality, cadaver sporulation and weight loss of yam chips. Lethal dose and lethal time values were estimated using probit analysis. Both fungal isolates at all conidial dose caused more than 50% mortality on day 7, with the highest mortality (94.44%) achieved using B. bassiana at the 10 9 conidia/mL. LT 50 values for B. bassiana and M. anisopliae isolates were 2.63 and 3.35 days, respectively, while their LT 90 values were 6.15 and 9.87 days, respectively. Yielding the lower LD 90 values and the highest rates of cadaver sporulation, B. bassiana isolate appeared as the most virulent against D. porcellus. After 3 months of storage, comparatively to the control, the B. bassiana isolate at the highest conidial dose (10 9 conidia/mL) significantly reduced D. porcellus populations, and weight loss of yam chips. This study revealed the potential of B. bassiana and M. anisoplae isolates as bio logical control agent against D. porcellus for yam chips protection
Teaching Scientific Romance in Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (1884) by Edwin A. Abbott explores the relation of geometry to literature. It is scientific romance in terms of journeying to the unexperienced, unfamiliar world of a higher dimension. Highlighting a shift from lower to higher dimensional spaces, the novel comprises two parts: “This World” and “Other Worlds.” Part I deals with two dimensional Flatland as “This World.” Part II travels over three and four dimensional spaces as “Other Worlds.” There are two teaching methods for addressing the correspondence between geometry and literature: a subordinating approach and an equalizing approach. In Part I, Abbott satirizes contemporary Victorian society through the personification of geometric figures. Two dimensional Flatland is a strictly hierarchical society where circles lie at the top of social order, followed by polygons as nobility, squares as middle-class intellectuals, isosceles triangles as lower classes, and finally straight lines as women at the bottom of class system. Abbott satirizes the rigidity of social rank, the pathologization of socially dangerous classes, the marginalization of women etc.. It should be stressed that Part I hardly concentrates on the issue of how geometric axioms work in Flatland’s class system. For geometric knowledge becomes instrumentalized merely for criticisms of contemporary society. This teaching method can be called a subordinating approach. On the other hand, an equalizing approach focuses on discursive interpenetration between geometry and humanities. Part II shows that a mathematical pursuit of the fourth dimension synchronizes with a satire on diverse kinds of fanatic dogmas in society. We see the interplay between the possible existence of the fourth dimension in geometry and unforeseen intellectual awakening dealt with in humanities. Part II addresses the mutual entanglement of a geometric pursuit of higher dimensions and a humanities search for spiritual enlightenment. Abbott’s Flatland urges readers to form mental ability to relativize reality. As school teacher and administrator, preacher, and literary critic, Abbott is resolute in educating students to take multiple perspectives. Learners in geometry and humanities lessons are pushed to relativize reality through thought experiment imagining higher dimensions. Just as Flatland narrator A Square experiences intellectual awakening with the aid of A Sphere, a stranger from the third dimensional Spaceland, Abbott hopes, students are encouraged to emulate this life-changing reforms of mind.

저자들은 본원 산부인과에서 임신 제 39주에 초음파검사로써 태아 복부내 낭종으로 진단되고 정상질식분만후 소아외과에서 낭종제거술후 조직검사로써 확인된 태아 난소낭종 1예를 경험하였기에 관련 문헌 고찰과 함께 증레를 보고하는 바이다. Small ovarian cysts in the newborn are not uncommon. Fetal ovarian cysts, previously rarely reported, are being diagnosed with increasing frequency with wider utilization of obstetrical sonography. Most of these small cysts involute within the first few months of life and have no clinical significance. Occassionally, however, a large ovarian cyst is seen antenatally with sonography and presents as an abdominal mass. A large ovarian cyst can cause life-threatening complications during parturition and in the neonatal period. We have recently experienced a case of fetal ovarian cyst in a 28-year-old multiparous woman and report our experience with a brief review of related literatures.

Purpose: In this study, the reliability growth management procedures for armed vehicle is suggested and an illustrative case study of launcher system is given. Methods: Crow-AMSAA model is adopted to manage reliability growth of armed vehicle using failure data acquired from development test phase to field operation phase. Between the development test phase and the production phase, the suggested reliability growth procedures for armed vehicle entails accelerated life test of the selected module whose design is changed to improve its reliability for assuring the target system reliability. And it can be verified through estimating the system reliability based on the failure data of field operation phase. Results: It is shown that the proposed reliability growth management procedures are effective for armed vehicle based on the case study of launcher system. After estimating the reliability of launcher system at every development test, some items are selected to change their designs for improving reliability. Accelerated life test is performed to prove the reliability improvement and finally it is verified through the field operation. Conclusion: The reliability growth management procedures for armed vehicle is suggested and the case study of launcher system shows it can be effective for managing the reliability growth of the armed vehicle.
