We report a 50-year-old woman with no relevant clinical history who presented with headache and loss of memory. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a left parieto-temporal mass with annular enhancement after contrast media administration, rendering a radiological diagnosis of high-grade astrocytic neoplasm. Tumour sampling was performed but the patient ultimately died as a result of disease. Microscopically, the lesion had areas of glioblastoma mixed with a benign mesenchymal constituent; the former showed hypercellularity, endothelial proliferation, high mitotic activity and necrosis, while the latter showed fascicles of long spindle cells surrounded by collagen and reticulin fibers. With approximately 40 previously reported cases, gliofibroma is a rare neoplasm defined as either glio-desmoplastic or glial/benign mesenchymal. As shown in our case, its prognosis is apparently determined by the degree of anaplasia of the glial component.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations of chronic diseases with changes in lifestyle and health behaviours in older people following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in Spain and compared the differences in changes over time. METHODS: 1,092 participants (80.3± 5.6 years; 66.5% female) from 2 Spanish cohorts were included. Telephone-based questionnaires were conducted to evaluate lifestyle and health risk behaviours at the end of lockdown and 7 months post-lockdown. Participants were classified as having physician-diagnosed chronic diseases based on self-reported data. Cox proportional models adjusted for major confounders were used. RESULTS: Compared to those without the corresponding chronic diseases, older people with hypertension were less likely to report increased alcohol consumption (hazard ratio [HR], 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55 to 0.99). Pulmonary diseases were associated with lower risks of increased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.86) and worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.87), while cardiovascular diseases were associated with a lower risk of decreased sedentary time (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.38 to 0.88). Depression was linked to a higher likelihood of improved diet quality (HR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.00 to 2.36). Cancer pacients were less likely to have worsened sleep quality (HR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.89) but more likely to have reduced their frequency of social contact (HR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.05 to 3.99). CONCLUSIONS: Older people with chronic diseases showed beneficial changes in lifestyle and health risk behaviours after the COVID-19 lockdown. In particular, older people with hypertension, pulmonary disease, and cancer tended to make beneficial lifestyle and health behaviour changes. However, older people with cardiovascular disease and depression engaged in more health risk behaviours.

Background: Family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of risk factors for that in future a subject can develop diabetes. Insulin resistance (IR) is important in the pathogenesis of T2DM. There is evidence that oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of diabetes. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) participates in developing of inflammation. The objective was to investigate if MPO is associated with IR and inflammation in individuals with first-degree relatives of T2DM. Methods: Cross-sectional study in 84 overweight individuals with family history of T2DM divided in two groups according to IR, group with IR (homeostasis model assessment [HOMA] ≥2.5; n=43) and control group (CG; HOMA <2.5; n=41). Complete clinical history and a venous blood sample were collected for measuring glucose and lipids profile, insulin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), MPO, glutathione reductase (GRd), glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. Results: MPO, TNF-α, and IL-6 were higher in patients with IR than in CG (MPO: 308.35 [190.85 to 445.42] vs. 177.35 [104.50 to 279.85], P=0.0001; TNF-α: 13.46 [10.58 to 18.88] vs. 9.39 [7.53 to 11.25], P=0.0001; IL-6: 32.93 [24.93 to 38.27] vs. 15.60 [12.93 to 26.27]; P=0.0001, respectively). MPO was associated with IR (rho de Spearman=0.362, P=0.001). In the analysis of lineal regression, MPO predicts IR (β, 0.263; t, 2.520; P=0.014). In the univariate analysis, MPO had an odds ratio of 9.880 for risk of IR (95% confidence interval, 2.647 to 36.879). Conclusion: MPO had relation with IR and inflammation parameters in overweight subjects with first-degree relatives of T2DM. We need studies on a casual relationship and molecular mechanisms among the increased serum MPO levels, inflammation markers, and IR.
Performance modelling of single and double absorption heat transformers
Rosa María Barragán Reyes,Víctor Manuel Arellano Gómez,Alfonso García-Gutiérrez 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.2
Absorption heat transformers (heat pump Type II) enable the temperature of a low heat source to be raised to a higher level. This process takes place by means of the absorption of a vaporized working fluid into a substance which has strong affinity for the vapor. The temperature lift and the coefficient of performance (a measure of the efficiency of the process), are important design parameters which depend on the thermodynamic properties of the working pair and also on the configuration of the equipment. In order to investigate the performance of readily available, not expensive and environmentally friendly fluids in heat transformers, the systems H2O/CaCl2 and H2O/LiCl were studied, by using a Fortran program. The theoretical performance of both systems in a single stage absorption heat transformer (SSHT), was derived and compared to results obtained previously for the system H2O/CaCl2 on a double absorption unit (DAHT).

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) production methods (ascites, in vitro technologies, transgenic animals, and dicot or monocot transgenic plants; moss, algae) have been improved since they were first developed in 1975. In this study, we illustrate a summary of a study case in which mice, a hollow fiber system, and tobacco transgenic plants were assessed for the production of mAb for vaccine manufacturing and vaccine production. Calculus of the defect severity with EMATs by analysing the attenuation curves of the guided wave
Carlos Q. Gómez,Fausto P. García,Alfredo Arcos,Liang Cheng,Maria Kogia,Mayorkinos Papelias 국제구조공학회 2017 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.19 No.2
The aim of this paper is to develop a novel method to determine the severity of a damage in a thin plate. This paper presents a novel fault detection and diagnosis approach employing a new electromagnetic acoustic transducer, called EMAT, together with a complex signal processing method. The method consists in the recognition of a fault that exists within the structure, the fault location, i.e. the identification of the geometric position of damage, and the determining the significance of the damage, which indicates the importance or severity of the defect. The main scientific novelties presented in this paper is: to develop of a new type of electromagnetic acoustic transducer; to incorporate wavelet transforms for signal representation enhancements; to investigate multi-parametric analysis for noise identification and defect classification; to study attenuation curves properties for defect localization improvement; flaw sizing and location algorithm development.

The photocatalytic degradation of the synthetic red mordant dye alizarin on TiO2-In2O3 semiconductors as a function of the In2O3 content (1-12 wt%) was studied. High specific surface areas varying from 122 to 178 m2 g−1, depending on the In2O3 content, were obtained. A modification of the Eg band gap from 3.12 to 3.50 eV was obtained for low and high In2O3 contents. The XRD spectral patterns of the solids showed that anatase is the main crystalline titania phase. STEM-EDX chemical maps show that the In2O3 was found highly dispersed on the surface of the TiO2-In2O3 mixed oxide. By means of TEM images, nanostructured materials with crystallite sizes between 8 and 12 nm were identified. The photocatalytic activity for the alizarin degradation showed a maximum with the catalyst with 3.0 wt% of In2O3. The role of the In2O3 developing an optimal alizarin adsorption on the TiO2-In2O3 semiconductors is discussed. Molybdenum release from high burnup spent nuclear fuel at alkaline and hyperalkaline pH
García-Gómez Sonia,Giménez Javier,Casas Ignasi,Llorca Jordi,De Pablo Joan,Martínez-Torrents Albert,Clarens Frederic,Kokinda Jakub,Iglesias Luis,Serrano-Purroy Daniel 한국원자력학회 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.1
This work presents experimental data and modelling of the release of Mo from high-burnup spent nuclear fuel (63 MWd/kgU) at two different pH values, 8.4 and 13.2 in air. The release of Mo from SF to the solution is around two orders of magnitude higher at pH = 13.2 than at pH = 8.4. The high Mo release at high pH would indicate that Mo would not be congruently released with uranium and would have an important contribution to the Instant Release Fraction, with a value of 5.3%. Parallel experiments with pure non irradiated Mo(s) and XPS determinations indicated that the faster dissolution at pH = 13.2 could be the consequence of the higher releases from metallic Mo in the fuel through a surface complexation mechanism promoted by the OH and the oxidation of the metal to Mo(VI) via the formation of intermediate Mo(IV) and Mo(V) species.
Effect of Ag doping on the crystallization and phase transition of TiO2 nanoparticles
J. García-Serrano,E. Gómez-Hernández,M. Ocampo-Fernández,U. Pal 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.5
TiO2 nanoparticles doped with different Ag contents were prepared by a modified sol–gel method, using titanium tetraisopropoxide and silver nitrate as precursors and 2-propanol as solvent. Silver was incorporated into the TiO2 matrix via decomposition of AgNO3 during thermal treatment in different atmospheres. Effects of Ag doping on the crystallization and phase transition of the TiO2 nanoparticles were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy techniques. While air annealing incorporates silver into TiO2 matrix in silver oxide form, annealing in nitrogen incorporates metallic silver into TiO2. Formation of silver oxide increases the thermal stability of the TiO2 particles. Silver oxide affects the crystallization process of TiO2 particles and the temperature of transition form anatase to rutile. On the other hand, presence of metallic silver in the samples annealed in nitrogen atmosphere decreases the temperature of phase transition of TiO2 nanoparticles.
