MADS-box genes (Schwarz-Sommer et al. 1990) contribute significantly to the development of inflorescences and flowers, e.g. by acting as floral meristem or organ identity genes (for recent reviews, see Thei?en and Saedler 1995; Thei?en et al. 1996;Riechmann and Meyerowitz 1997). Up to now, MADS-box genes have mainly been studied in the scientific context of developmental biology, and in eudicotyledonous model plants of little commercial value, such as Antirrhinum and Arabidopsis. The focus of our group is to apply our current knowledge about flower development to breeding research and evolutionary biology. Therefore, we are currently characterizing the MADS-box gene family in the important monocotyledonous crop plant maize (Zea mays ssp. mays), and in other phylogenetic informative taxa, such as the monocots lily (Lilium regale) and tulip (Tulipa gesneriana), the basal angiosperm Cabomba, and non-flowering plnats including the gymnosperm Gnetum gnemon and the ferns Ceratopteris and Ophioglossum.
Discrete element modeling of fluid injection-induced seismicity and activation of nearby fault

Enhanced geothermal systems, shale gas, and geological carbon sequestration all require underground fluid injection in high-pressure conditions. Fluid injection creates fractures, induces seismicity, and has the potential to reactivate nearby faults that can generate a large magnitude earthquake. Mechanisms of fluid injection-induced seismicity and fault reactivation should be better understood to be able to mitigate larger events triggered by fluid injection. This study investigates fluid injection, induced seismicity, and triggering of fault rupture using hydromechanical-coupled discrete element models. Results show that a small amount of fluid pressure perturbation can trigger fault ruptures that are critically oriented and stressed. Induced seismicity by rock failure shows in general higher b-values (slope of magnitude-frequency relation) compared to seismicity triggered by the fault fracture slip. Numerical results closely resemble observations from geothermal and shale-gas fields and demonstrate that discrete element modeling has the potential to be applied in the field as a tool for predicting induced seismicity prior to in situ injection.

Mode locking of an Yb-doped bulk laser in the 1 microm spectral range using a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber (SWCNT-SA) is demonstrated for the first time, to our knowledge. Passive mode locking of an Yb:KLuW laser resulted in nearly transform-limited pulses as short as 115 fs at 1048 nm. In addition, the nonlinear response of the SWCNT-SA was measured, yielding a modulation depth of 0.25% and a relaxation time of 750 fs.

Abstract

Two types of new cellular metals are fabricated by assembling layer by layer helically‐formed wires with metal hollow sphere (MHS) arrays. In the finished configuration, the MHSs are located in small tetrahedrons or octahedrons of the inner space of a wire‐woven bulk Kagome (WBK) structure. Compression tests reveal excellent energy absorption, which is attributed to combination of suppression of strut buckling in the WBK and moving plastic hinge occurring in the MHSs. The WBK‐MHS hybrids outperform competitors in deformation energy absorption.

We examined the formation of a multiply curved meniscus inside rectangular nanochannels, whose width ranges from 50 to 800 nm at a constant height of 200 nm. When the channel width is smaller than approximately 400 nm under partial wetting conditions, a distinct multi-curvature meniscus was observed at the advancing front with an edge disjoined from the wall. In contrast, a typical pre-wetting film was observed at the front regardless of the channel size for complete wetting conditions. Our theoretical analysis demonstrated that the multi-curvature meniscus is generated from the increased contribution of an extra pressure due to intermolecular interactions near the wall. In particular, a plug-like meniscus profile was observed at the advancing liquid front for the 50 nm wide channel owing to an overlap between convex curvatures at the channel walls. Finally, we showed that the filling velocity of liquid can be decreased by decreasing the channel size due to the reduced wettability.
