The physical appearance of germinating basidiospores of Cronartium ribicola J.C. Fisch. ex Rabenh. and epicuticular wax structures of western white pine(Pinus monticola Dougl.) needles were assessed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Three patterns of germ tube growth were observed relative to the stomatal rows:parallel, perpendicular, and curved. One to four germ tubes(about 3 ㎛ in diameter) originated from a spore(7.5∼8 ㎛ in diameter) with one elongated more than the others. Three types of germination, i.e., thin-unbranched germ tubes, thick germ tubes with secondary spores, and zigzag germ tubes, were observed on both needles and bacto-agar coated slides, but the zigzag pattern was rare on the slides. Western white pine needle surfaces have three phenotypic classes of wax:waxy, intermediate, and glossy. We suggest that either freeze drying or air drying is an adequate preparative methodology for examining wax morphology on the needles of western white pine by scanning electron microscopy.

Three-year-old seedlings of susceptible Pinus densiflora and resistant Pinus x rigitaeda were each inoculated with the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, to compare disease development. Needle dehydration was evident on seedlings of P. densiflora by 20 days after inoculation, 10 days earlier than this symptom was observed on P. x rigitaeda. Xylem drying was more frequent in seedlings of P. densiflora than in that of P. x rigitaeda between 20 and 60 days after inoculation. No significant differences were found between P. densiflora and P. x rigitaeda for stem water content or for stem and leaf relative water content in current-year branches after nematode inoculation, but the average number of B. xylophilus recovered from stems differed significantly between the two groups. The number of B. xylophilus recovered from stems was negatively correlated with the stem water content and with stem and leaf relative water content. By the time the experiment was terminated at 60 days after inoculation, all 3 of the last group of P. densiflora seedlings had died, but 2 of the 3 remaining P. x rigitaeda hybrid seedlings were still alive. Additional studies are needed to further explore the specific mechanisms preventing nematode multiplication in the seedlings of resistant P. x rigitaeda.

This work presents the characterization of novel synthesized WO3/Fe3O4 catalysts and investigates theirphotocatalytic activity for thiacloprid decomposition under UV and simulated sunlight radiation. FourWO3/Fe3O4 nanopowders with different amounts of WO3 were synthesized by chemical co-precipitationmethod. XRD analysis showed the presence of hematite and magnetite nano-dimensional phases ofFe3O4 in the catalysts. The magnetite phase content increased with increasing WO3 content. Degradationefficiency of thiacloprid in the presence of 6.1WO3/Fe3O4/H2O2 under simulated solar radiation was 2.2times higher compared to Fe3O4. Under an external magneticfield, a significant increase in the catalystsseparation from reaction mixture was observed.

The frictional and indented behavior of a diamond asperity on a diamond plate was carried out using a molecular dynamics (MD) and experiments. The contact load, contact area, dynamic frictional force, and dynamic frictional coefficient increased as the contact interference increased at a constant loading velocity. The microcontact and frictional behavior can be evaluated between a rigid smooth hemisphere to a deformable rough flat plane by combined the deformed behavior of the asperity obtained from MD results with the fractal and statistic parameters. The comparison and the discrepancy of simulated results and nanoindentation and scratching experimental results will be discussed.

O Huimun, a Joseon yangban who had never passed the civil service examination and consequently never been appointed to a government position, was travelling around Jeolla Province in 1592 when the first Japanese invasion of the Imjin War (1592-1598) occurred. From the outset of his travels at the end of 1591 until his return to Seoul early in 1601, O Huimun kept an almost unbroken daily record of his and his family’s life experiences as they struggled to survive in the adverse conditions of wartime Joseon. One of the most salient features of the “Gabo illok” (Daily record of the lunar year 1594) section of the diary is O Huimun’s frequent recourse to divination during the time when he and his family were taking refuge in Imcheon 林川 in Chungcheong Province and came into contact with Yi Bongnyeong, a divination official (myeonggwagwan 命課官) in the Office of Observance of Natural Phenomena (Gwansanggam 觀象監) of the Joseon government, who was also taking refuge there. In order to help us better understand the daily life and world view of a Neo-Confucian yangban in mid-Joseon times, this article examines O Huimun’s frequent recourse to Yi Bongnyeong’s divination in relation to health matters, his daughter’s marriage and childbirth, his sons’ prospects in the civil service examination, and general fortune telling.
