      • Energy Performance Analyses in Low Carbon Buildings

        The Developing communities in their path for rapid development is endeavoring to make all necessary and appropriate measures to enhance the efficiency of energy utilization and increase the beneficiation of the energy resources. The energy production, transmission, distribution and utilization efficiency becomes a vital factor and measure of national development. Governmental organizations were established earlier to be responsible for energy planning and efficient utilization, information dissemination and capacity building as well as devising the necessary codes and standards. Throughout the Nation Energy resources are widely used and consumption rates are in general exceeding the International accepted values. Energy rationalization and audit exercises were developed and monitored by Governmental authorities, Universities and Research centers through the past two decades with a definitive positive energy reduction and beneficiation. The development of the relevant codes for Residential and Commercial Energy Efficiency in Building is underway through the governmental bodies responsible for the research and development in the building Technology sector and is the umbrella under which the National and Unified Arab Codes are developed and issued. A proposed new Energy Performance in Buildings Directive would fulfill the following main targets of Energy Performance Directive: 1. “Legestilative authorities shall ensure that, when buildings are constructed, sold or rented out, an energy performance certificate is made available to the owner or by the owner to the prospective buyer or tenant, as the case might be. … 2. The energy performance certificate for buildings shall include reference values such as currant legal standards and benchmarks in order to make it possible for consumers to compare and assess the energy performance of the building. The certificate shall be accompanied by recommendations for cost-effective improvement of the energy performance…” The following steps are required for the energy certification: 1. Develop methodologies for energy declaration of the buildings 2. Develop reference values (key numbers) and /or systems for benchmarking 3. Provide a labeling system for selected buildings 4. Describe an energy signature for the building.

      • Flow Regimes and Thermal Patterns in 15th Century BC Tombs of the Valley of Kings

        The cultural heritage left by the Egyptian Pharaohs in the tombs of the Valley of the Kings represents some of the key elements of the Egyptian cultural and tourism wealth and standing monuments demonstrating the wealth and technology of the pharaohs. These tombs were prepared to bury the Kings` mummies and artifacts for eternal life. Many of the wall paintings identifying the various ancient rituals and life style are in good conditions as the tombs were only recently opened to the public and resulted, in many instances, to dramatic deterioration of the wall paintings due in part to excessive humidity. Basically, ventilation air design systems are considered here for the tomb passage of King Ramses VII, Ramses IV, Siti II and Bay including different visitors (obstacles) alternative positioning to adequately predict the actual air flow, thermal and moisture patterns in the tombs and hence to provide energy efficient design of ventilation system and reduce the adverse effect of excessive humidity. The present work made use of packaged Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) programs. For the present work, following similar work of Abdel Aziz et al [1] and Khalil [2], a numerical study is carried out to define the optimum airside design of the tombs air ventilation and conditioning systems, which provides the optimum comfort and healthy conditions with optimum energy utilization. Basically, airside design types are considered here for the tomb passage of King Ramses VII, Ramses IV, Siti II and Bay, including different visitors (obstacles) alternative positioning to introduce the capability of the design to provide the optimum characteristics. The primary objective of the present work is to assess the airflow characteristics, thermal pattern and moisture distribution in the different tombs ventilation configurations in view of basic known flow characteristics. Tombs consist, typically of three gently sloping corridors. The free air supply and mechanically extracted ducted air play an important role in shaping the main flow pattern where the internal obstacles can distort the airflow pattern by increasing the recirculation zones or by deflecting the main airflow pattern, [3 and 4].

        Chain Transfer to Monomer and Polymer in the Radical Polymerization of Vinyl Neo-decanoate

        Molecular weight distributions of poly(vinyl neo-decanoate) produced by the bulk polymerization of the monomer to low conversions were investigated to obtain values of the rate constants for the chain transfer to monomer ( $C_{M}$). The value of $C_{M}$ of 7.5($\pm$0.6)${\times}$10$^{-4}$ was obtained from a logarithmic plot of the number distribution at 5,25, and 5$0^{\circ}C$, which suggests that the activation energy for chain transfer is on the order of 20-25 kJ ㏖$^{-1}$ . These plots were linear between the number and weight-average degrees of polymerization, but not over the whole molecular weight range for which a significant signal was observed in the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) trace. Modeling suggests that the deviations observed at high molecular weights can be explained by branching of the chains through chain transfer to the polymer, with a branching density as low as 10$^{-5}$ , without affecting the slope at low values of the number of monomer unit, N. This deviation from the expected distribution of linear chains was used to estimate the branching densities at low conversion.ion.

        THE GALAXY-BLACK HOLE CONNECTION IN THE LOCAL UNIVERSE

        Recent results from large surveys of the local universe show that the galaxy-black hole connection is linked to host morphology at a fundamental level and that there are two fundamentally different modes of black hole growth. The fraction of early-type galaxies with actively growing black holes, and therefore the AGN duty cycle, declines significantly with increasing black hole mass. Late-type galaxies exhibit the opposite trend: the fraction of actively growing black holes increases with black hole mass. Issues of AGN selection bias and prospects for near-future efforts with high redshift data are discussed.

      • Software Defined Electronics: A Revolutionary Change in Design and Teaching Paradigm of RF Radio Communications Systems

        Band-pass signals are used everywhere in radio communications. The band-pass property makes the substitution of each RF/microwave/ optical analog signal processing possible with a low-frequency digital one in Software Defined Electronics (SDE). In SDE, the high frequency band-pass signals are transformed into the BaseBand (BB) by a universal HW device and every application is implemented in BB, entirely in software. SDE concept uses (i) the lowest sampling rate attainable theoretically and (ii) the same universal HW device in every application. The huge level of flexibility offered by the SW implementation is essential in many applications from cognitive radio to adaptive reconfigurable systems. This tutorial, written for interested readers who have no solid background in software defined radio, virtual instrumentation and SoC technology, surveys the SDE theory, uses a step-by-step approach for the derivation of BB equivalents and demonstrates the application of SDE concept in scientific research, prototyping and education.

        Kinetic Features of the Cobalt Dihalide/Methylaluminoxane Catalytic System in 1,3-Butadiene Polymerization

        The kinetic features of polymerization with an active site comprising cobalt dihalides ($CoX_2$, where X=Cl, Br, I) activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) were investigated in 1,3-butadiene polymerization. The catalytic system exhibited the characteristic features of living polymerization. The initiation ($k_i$) and propagation ($k_p$) rate coefficients were estimated using the kinetic model for slow initiation previously reported by Shiono et al. The energy of activation fur the propagation reaction was calculated to be 27-30 $kJmol^{-1}$. The marked changes in reaction rate observed with different halides could be adequately described in terms of variations in the initiation process, with the same Arrhenius curve fitting propagation rate coeffcients estimated from all three halides, suggesting that the halide does not participate in the growing chain end.

        Next Generation DNA Sequencing and Its Application in Clinical Medicine

        Watson and Crick published a paper on the double helical structure of DNA in Nature in April 25, 1953. The human genome is contained in the 23 pairs of chromosomes and in the mitochondrial DNA of each cell. The Human Genome Project was launched in 1990 under the direction of Watson and concluded in 2003, on the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick paper. Over 6 billion of nucleotides of genetic codes are in single cells. There are 23,000 protein coding genes and the remainder are non-coding DNA, regulatory DNA. Since the completion of Human Genome Project, these huge genomic information has been translated into clinically usable medical information. With the advent of massively parallel DNA sequencing, known as next generation DNA sequencing, the cost and turn-around time were significantly reduced so that the era of Whole Genome Sequencing entered into hospitals and medical clinics. On June 16, 2014 American Society of Human Genetics revised its mission statement as follows. “Our mission is to advance human genetics in science, health and society through research, education and advocacy”. Finally medical genetics nestled its roots in the midst of genetics and genomics.
