      • The Europlanet-2024 Research Infrastructure: Trans-National Access to Planetary Field Analogues and Laboratory Analyses and Simulation Facilities

        Gareth R. Davies,Sara Russell,Jon Merrison,Jorn Helbert,Barbara Cavalazzi,TA facility Leads,Keewook Yi,Anita Heward,Nigel Mason 대한지질학회 2021 대한지질학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Europlanet emerged from collaborations between European scientists and engineers involved in the Cassini-Huygens mission that studied the Saturn system. The principal aim of Europlanet was to overcome fragmentation within the European planetary science community. Funding from the European Commission (EC) initially focused on networking activities (2M€, 2005-2008). Subsequent funding allowed the development of a series of research infrastructures (RI) that evolved from a networking focus (6M€, 2009-2012) into providing service activities (10M€, 2013-2018, 10M€, 2020-2024) to support the research of the entire European planetary community associated with on-going and planned space missions. A major achievement of the Europlanet community has been the establishment of the annual Europlanet Science Congress that attracts researchers from around the globe (> 1000 abstracts). Europlanet-2024 RI involves an increasing number of institutions, currently 56 from 25 countries are direct beneficiaries. This presentation will outline the trans-national access facilities available to ALL international researchers. Significantly, the Europlanet RI also provides access to virtual data (Virtual Planetary and Solar European Access-VESPA), supports modelling Solar and planetary radiation (Sun Planet Interactions Digital Environment on Request-SPIDER), geologic mapping of planetary bodies (GMAP) and support with machine learning in a planetary sciences (ML). A specific work-package coordinates ground based observation from relatively small telescopes. Trans-national access (TA) allows researchers to visit field sites or laboratories in a country other than where they are based. Funding covers travel and accommodation for up to two researchers, and the field site/laboratory running costs. More than 200 visits will be funded over the duration of the current funding round. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic various modes of virtual access have been instigated in additional to the traditional physical visits. To obtain funding, researchers submit a short proposal (~1 page science plus 1 page implementation plan and personal details) that is subjected to an anonymous peer review process that does not involve Europlanet beneficiaries. South Korean researchers are guaranteed preferential access to Europlanet TA facilities due to a reciprocal agreement between Europlanet and the Korean Basic Science Institute. The highly diverse Planetary field analogue TA facilities are discussed in more detail in Cavalazzi et al . Twenty four distributed planetary laboratories include state-of-the-art analytical capabilities as well as the ability to simulate planetary environments. TA visits have been used for: • The validation of space instrument design and performance • The study of physical and geological processes that form specific planetary environments, • The evaluation of biogeochemical processes that control whether life could evolve or survive. • Detailed mineralogical, (bio) geochemical and isotopic characterisation of (extra-terrestrial) sample materials. The current remit of the European Commission tis to make TA facilities available to all science and social science disciplines. Hence, the planetary TA facilities have been used for diverse subjects including archaeology, art history etc. More details of the TA facilities can be found at https://www.europlanet-society.org/europlanet-2024-ri/ta2-dplf/
