When Push Comes to Shove : Tonal Crowding in Madrid Spanish
( Timothy L. Face ) 대한언어학회 2002 언어학 Vol.10 No.1
Face, Timothy L. 2002. When Push Comes to Shove Tonal Crowding in Madrid Spanish. The Linguistic Association of Korea journal, 10(1), 77 100. Spanish declaratives sentences are characterized by a tiling pitch accent associated with each stressed syllable. The rise in fundamental frequency begins neat the beginning of the stressed syllable and continues into late syllables. When two stressed syllables occur close together, thus creates a situation of tonal crowding where adjustments in the timing and scaling of the rises must be made in order for both to be realized. Most previous work on Spanish tonal crowding has been done on Mexican Spanish. The present study examines tonal crowding in Madrid Spanish and compares it with that of Mexican Spanish. It is found that while there ace similarities, there ace interesting differences as well. The differences ay be attributable to different degrees of articulation by speakers in different studies or to dialectal differences in the strategies employed to resolve tonal crowding situations.
