Koreans in Transbaikal Region: A Case Study of Massive Korean Immigration to Russia
Vol.20 No.1
The article is devoted to Korean immigration to Russia. particularly in Transbaikal region. Koreans have been living in Russia and other CIS countries already for 150 years. During the period of settlement in Russia. Russian Koreans experienced great influence of the Soviet and Russian culture. almost lost their language (Korean language is as much as foreign for 4th and 5th generations). lost many of the traditions and customs of the Korean culture. and basically were assimilated to host country. Their population is nearly half a million. but still only a few people know how and when their ancestors were in Russia. what was their history, and what difficulties the Korean community is challenging now. This experience of the Korean diaspora is great value to the Korean people. The sufferings of the Koreans in the diaspora were not less severe than those endured by the Koreans at home. After going through many trials. Koreans abroad retained. however. many features and characteristics of the entire Korean people. Hard work. perseverance. dedication and devotion to their traditional culture. which is closely connected with the ethnic identity - all this is a feature of the Korean people.
