        The role of macrophytes in wetland ecosystems

        Aquatic macrophytes, often also called hydrophytes, are key components of aquatic and wetland ecosystems. This review is to briefly summarizes various macrophyte classifications, and covers numerous aspects of macrophytes’ role in wetland ecosystems, namely in nutrient cycling. The most widely accepted macrophyte classification differentiates between freely floating macrophytes and those attached to the substrate, with the attached, or rooted macrophytes further divided into three categories: floating-leaved, submerged and emergent. Biogeochemical processes in the water column and sediments are to a large extent influenced by the type of macrophytes. Macrophytes vary in their biomass production,capability to recycle nutrients, and impacts on the rhizosphere by release of oxygen and organic carbon, as well as their capability to serve as a conduit for methane. With increasing eutrophication, the species diversity of wetland macrophytes generally declines, and the speciose communities are being replaced by monoculture-forming strong competitors. A similar situation often happens with invasive species. The roles of macrophytes and sediment microorganisms in wetland ecosystems are closely connected and should be studied simultaneously rather than in isolation.

      • 중학 및 고교 탁구선수들의 상태불안수준 분석

        본 연구는 중고등학교 탁수선수의 상태불안 수준을 조사하기 위하여 실시하였다. 피험자는 중학 및 고등학교의 남녀 탁구선수로서 중학부 132명(남:58, 여:74) 고등부 222명(남:82, 여:140) 총 354명이었다. 본 연구의 검사도구는 Martens 등(1990)에 의해 고안된 CSAI-2였다. 측정된 자료는 대상(중학선수/고교선수)과 성별(남/여)로 평균과 표준편차를 산출하고 상태불안 요인별로 이원변량 분석을 실시하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 인지적 상태불안수준은 대상간에 차이가 있었으나 성별간에 차이가 없었다. 2. 신체적 상태불안수준은 대상간에 차이가 있었으나 성별간에 차이가 없었다. 3. 상태 자신감수준은 성별간에 차이가 있었으나 대상간에 차이가 없었다. 이상과 같은 결론은 일반적으로 대상의 연령이 어릴수록 상태불안수준이 증가한다는 것을 뜻하며 선행연구들의 결과와 일치하는 것이다. 즉, 연령이 어릴수록 불안을 해소하기 위한 심리적 기법을 적절히 사용하지 못하고 있다는 것을 시사하는 것이다.

      • 탁구 국가대표 후보선수와 일반선수들의 정신력 분석

        본 연구는 탁구 국가대표 후보선수와 일반선수들의 정신력을 분석하기 위하여 탁구 국가대표 후보선수 34명(남: 19명, 여: 15명)과 일반고교선수 50명(남: 25명, 여: 25명) 등 총 84명을 대상으로 실시하였다. 검사도구는 자신감, 각성조절, 주의력 조절, 시각 및 심상조절, 동기수준, 긍정적 에너지, 태도조절의 7개 요인으로 구성되어 있는 Loehr(1982)의 정신력 진단 검사지를 사용하였으며, 개인별로 산출된 정신력 검사 결과는 성별과 기능수준별로 분류하여 평균과 표준편차를 산출하고 프로파일을 작성하고 평균차를 검증하기 위하여 이원변량분석(2-way ANOVA)을 실시하였다. 본 연구에서 수집된 자료들을 분석한 결과, 일반적으로 탁구선수들은 자신감, 각성조절, 긍정적 에너지에서 낮은 수준을 나타냈다. 반면에 주의조절과 시각 및 이미지, 동기수준, 태도조절 능력은 상대적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 모든 정신력 요인에서 우수선수와 일반선수들 간의 차이가 일관성 있게 나타났다. 특히 자신감과 시각 및 이미지능력에 있어서는 많은 차이를 보이고 있다. 반면에 남자선수와 여자선수들 간에 정신력 요인의 차이는 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 여자 일반선수들의 경우 모든 정신력요인에서 남녀 우수선수와 남자 일반선수에 비하여 현저하게 낮은 정신력 수준을 나타냈다. 따라서 탁구선수들은 경기수행에 필요한 심리적 기술을 강화시키기 위한 훈련을 체계적으로 실시하여야 할 것으로 판단된다.

        Inheritance of Yield and Yield-related Traits in Highland Maize Hybrids of Uganda

        Although many studies have been conducted on gene action of grain yield and yield related traits in maize, none of them focused on highland maize in Uganda. This study was conducted to establish the gene action controlling inheritance of yield and its related traits in highland maize hybrids. Thirty-six F1 hybrids generated from a 9 x 9 half diallel mating design, were planted with two local checks in three highland locations; Kalengyere, Kachwekano, and Buginyanya with two replications using a 2 x 19 alpha (0, 1) lattice design. Results showed that inheritance of ear length and anthesis-silking interval was controlled by both additive and non-additive gene action while the inheritance of days to anthesis, days to silking was mainly controlled by additive gene action. The inheritance of grain yield and other yield related traits was greatly influenced by environment and genotype x environment interaction. Considering the great influence of the environment and genotype x environment interaction on most of the traits including grain yield, further testing in additional locations over more seasons and broadening the genetic base of the parents is encouraged.

        Synthesis of hexyl butyrate (apple and citrus aroma) by Candida rugosa lipase immobilized on Diaion HP-20 using the Box-Behnken design

        This study aims at the synthesis of hexyl butyrate by Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) immobilized on Diaion HP 20. The lipase load used was 28.7 ± 2.1 mg/g (mg of lipase/g of support), whose hydrolytic activity was 132.0 ± 2.5 U/g. To obtain the maximum production of hexyl butyrate, the Box-Behnken design statistical planning was used, having as independent variables; biocatalyst concentration, temperature and acid:alcohol molar ratio and ester conversion as a dependent variable at 60, 180 and 480 min. For 60 min, 90.8% conversion was obtained at 47.25 ºC, 1:1.4 molar ratio and 17.65% of biocatalyst; 180 min, 94.5% conversion at 59.5 ºC, 1:2 molar ratio and 15.8% biocatalyst; 480 min, 95.01% conversion at 47.0 ºC, 1:2 molar ratio and 16.9% biocatalyst. CRL-Diaion HP 20 retained 60% of its initial activity after ten cycles of reactions showing potential for industrial use. The ester produced was identified by gas chromatography analyses.

        Strength and stiffness modeling of extended endplate connections with circular and rectangular bolt configurations

        The results of a series of finite element (FE) simulations and experimental studies are used to develop strength and stiffness models that predict the failure capacity and response characteristics of unstiffened extended endplate connections with circular and rectangular bolt configurations associated with deep girders. The proposed stiffness models are composed of multi-linear springs which model the overall extended endplate/column flange system deformation and strength of key-components. Comparison of model predictions with FE and experimental results available in the literature show that the proposed models accurately predict the strength and the response of extended endplate/column system with circular and rectangular bolt configurations. The effect of the bolt configuration (circular and rectangular) on the prying phenomenon encountered in the unstiffened extended endplate/column system was investigated. Based on FE results, extended endplate with circular bolt configuration has a more ductile behavior and exhibits higher total prying forces. The proposed models can be used to design connections that cover all possible failure modes for extended endplate with circular bolt configuration. This study provides guidelines for engineers to account for the additional forces induced in the tension bolts and for the maximum rotational capacity demand in the connection which are required for seismic analysis and design.

        In Vitro Bioaccessibility and Effect of Mangifera indica (Ataulfo) Leaf Extract on Induced Dyslipidemia

        Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading causes of death in the world, and epidemiological evidence points to dietary habits, stress, and obesity as major risk factors promoting pathological conditions like atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombosis. Current therapeutic approaches for CVDs rely on lifestyle changes and/or the use of drug agents. However, since the efficacy of such interventions is often limited by poor compliance and/or significant side effects, continued research on new preventive and therapeutic approaches is much needed. Our study is aimed to determine the bioaccessibility, total content of phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity (DPPH·, ABTS·+) of a methanolic extract from Mangifera indica L. leaves (MEM), and its lipid-lowering effect on an induced dyslipidemia model in Wistar rats. Our results showed that mangiferin is the main component of MEM. The extract showed a total content of polyphenol compounds of 575.28 gallic acid equivalents per dry matter basis (GAE/g db), antioxidant activity 77.68 μmol Trolox equivalents per gram (TE/g) db as measured by DPPH· and 20,630 μmol TE/g db by ABTS·+, and 12% of phenolic compounds were bioaccessible, and 100 mg/kg of MEM reduced hyperlipidemia levels induced in Wistar rats. Further study on the potential use of MEM as a nutraceutical to prevent CVDs in high-fat diet consumers is required.

        Minor Subjects/Minor Literature: Maja Lee Langvad’s Find Holger Danske and the Search for Danishness

        This article focuses on the Korean-born Danish adoptee poet Maja Lee Langvad’s work Find Holger Danske (2006), and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notion of minor literature. Maja Lee Langvad’s book is an ironic-experimental as well as lyrical exploration of the question where to find Danish-ness (and where not to find it) at the margins — in an epoch during which the very notion of Danish-ness seems to be under threat. It is furthermore a reflection on the author’s own minority position — that of the transracial adoptee. Transracial adoptee subjectivity is one of the most intriguing forms of migrancy, above all because it is rarely categorized as a form of migration. Yet the process involves subjects radically deterritorialized and uprooted. In Lee Langvad’s texts, a strange traversing between invisibility and visibility, as well as minority and majority, is captured with an acute urgency — and all the more so because the book foregrounds the recent political climate in Denmark — one that within the last two decades has become increasingly paranoid and xenophobic. Our argument is that her book effectively deconstructs the concept of Danish-ness while foregrounding marginalised subjectivities, such as the author’s own particular subject position.
