Microarray technology has contributed significantly to the understanding of bacterial genetics and transcriptional regulation. One neglected aspect of this technology has been optimization of microarray-generated signals and quality of generated information. Full genome microarrays were developed for Clostridium acetobutylicum through spotting of PCR products that were designed with minimal homol-ogy with all other genes within the genome. Using statistical analyses it is demonstrated that signal qual-ity is significantly improved by increasing the hybridization volume, possibly increasing the effective number of transcripts available to bind to a given spot, while changes in labeled probe amounts were found to be less sensitive to improving signal quality. In addition to Q-RT-PCR, array validation was tested by examining the transcriptional program of a mutant (M5) strain lacking the pSOL1 178-gene megaplasmid relative to the wildtype (WT) strain. Under optimal conditions, it is demonstrated that the fraction of false positive genes is 1% when considering differentially expressed genes and 7% when con-sidering all genes with signal above background. To enhance genomic-scale understanding of organismal physiology, using data from these microarrays we estimated that 40~55% of the C. acetobutylicum ge-nome is expressed at any time during batch culture, similar to estimates made for Bacillus subtilis.
GENDER SHOPPING STYLES: HE HUNTER, SHE GATHERER?
Charles Dennis,J. Joško Brakus,Eleftherios Alamanos 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7
How stable are shopping styles of women and men across cultures? To find out, the authors develop a new scale that reliably measures differences between male and female shopping styles and is stable across cultures. They develop a conceptual model and hypotheses to test whether observed differences in gender shopping styles are likely to be innate or arise from socialization. Through a survey of consumers in seven countries, they show that males and females are evolutionary predisposed to have different shopping styles. Counter to social structural theory, the observed differences in shopping style between females and males are greater in low-context cultures (higher gender equality countries) than in high-context cultures (lower gender equality countries). Empathizing—the ability to tune into another person’s thoughts and feelings—mediates shopping style more for female shoppers; systemizing—the degree to which an individual possesses spatial skills—mediates shopping style more for male shoppers. Therefore, retail segmentation between females and males appears to be of more managerial relevance than segmentation between cultures. Other managerial implications are also discussed.
Fat Embolism Syndrome - Three Case Reports and Review of the Literature
( Leonidas Grigorakos ),( Ioannis Nikolopoulos ),( Stamatina Stratouli ),( Anastasia Alexopoulou ),( Eleftherios Nikolaidis ),( Eleftherios Fotiou ),( Daria Lazarescu ),( Ioannis Alamanos ) 대한외상학회 2017 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.30 No.3
The fat embolism syndrome (FES) represents a condition, usually with traumatic etiology, which may pose challenges to diagnosis while its treatment usually requires supportive measures in the intensive care units (ICUs). The clinical criteria, including respiratory and cerebral dysfunction and a petechial rash, along with imaging studies help in diagnosis. Here we present three case reports of young male who developed FES and were admitted to our ICUs after long bones fractures emerging after vehicle crashes and we briefly review FES literature. All patients' treatment was directed towards: 1) the restoration of circulating volume with fresh blood and/or plasma; 2) the correction of acidosis; and 3) immobilization of the affected part. All patients recovered and were released to the orthopedic wards. The incidence of cases of patients with FES admitted in our ICUs records a significant decrease. This may be explained in terms effective infrastructure reforms in Greece which brought about significant improvement in early prevention and management.

PURPOSE. The aim of the present randomized controlled study was to compare prefabricated all-ceramic, anatomically shaped healing abutments followed by all-ceramic abutments and all-ceramic crowns and prefabricated standard-shaped (round-diameter) titanium healing abutments followed by final titanium abutments restored with porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) implant crowns in the premolar and molar regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty-two patients received single implants restored either by all-ceramic restorations (test group, healing abutment, final abutment, and crown all made of zirconia) or conventional titanium-based restorations. Immediately after prosthetic incorporation and after 12 months of loading, implant survival, technical complications, bone loss, sulcus fluid flow rate (SFFR) as well as plaque index (PI) and implant stability (Periotest) were analyzed clinically and radiologically. RESULTS. After 12 months of loading, an implant and prosthetic survival rate of 100% was observed. Minor prosthetic complications such as chipping of ceramic veneering occurred in both groups. No statistical significant differences were observed between both groups with only a minimum of bone loss, SFFR, and PI. CONCLUSION. All-ceramic implant prostheses including a prefabricated anatomically shaped healing abutment achieved comparable results to titanium-based restorations in the posterior region. However, observational results indicate a benefit as shaping the peri-implant soft-tissue with successive provisional devices and subsequent compression of the soft tissue can be avoided. SAMHD1 Has Differential Impact on the Efficacies of HIV Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors
Huber, Andrew D.,Michailidis, Eleftherios,Schultz, Megan L.,Ong, Yee T.,Bloch, Nicolin,Puray-Chavez, Maritza N.,Leslie, Maxwell D.,Ji, Juan,Lucas, Anthony D.,Kirby, Karen A.,Landau, Nathaniel R.,Saraf American Society for Microbiology 2014 Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Vol.58 No.8

Sterile alpha motif- and histidine/aspartic acid domain-containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) limits HIV-1 replication by hydrolyzing deoxynucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) necessary for reverse transcription. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are components of anti-HIV therapies. We report here that SAMHD1 cleaves NRTI triphosphates (TPs) at significantly lower rates than dNTPs and that SAMHD1 depletion from monocytic cells affects the susceptibility of HIV-1 infections to NRTIs in complex ways that depend not only on the relative changes in dNTP and NRTI-TP concentrations but also on the NRTI activation pathways.

Angioleiomyoma of the oral cavity: a case report and brief review of the literature
Apostolos Matiakis,Panagiotis Karakostas,Achilleia-Maria Pavlou,Eleftherios Anagnostou,Athanasios Poulopoulos 대한구강악안면외과학회 2018 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.44 No.3
This study presents a case of an oral angioleiomyoma along with its clinical diagnostic approach and laboratory confirmation. The differential diagno-sis, especially from angioleiomyosarcoma, is also included. A 51-year-old patient presented with a tumor-like lesion on his upper labial mucosa. The clinical examination revealed a benign lesion that was surgically removed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed the diagnosis of an oral angioleiomyoma. The post-surgical period was uneventful. No recurrence had occurred after a year of follow-up surveillance. Oral angioleiomyoma is a very rarely occurring oral lesion. Clinically, it may mimic some benign lesions, including fibroma, pyogenic granuloma or minor salivary gland tumor. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Histological and immunohistochemical examination can confirm the diagnosis. The differential diagnosis is crucial to rule out angioleiomyosarcoma.
Dietary Carob Pods on Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Fattening Pigs
Kotrotsios, Nikolaos,Christaki, Efterpi,Bonos, Eleftherios,Paneri, Panagiota Florou Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.6
In this experiment the effect of dietary carob pods in the growth performance of fattening pigs and their meat quality, including steak chemical composition and fatty acid profile, were examined. A total of 160 weaning piglets, 30 days old, were allocated into four equal groups with 4 subgroups of 5 female and 5 males each. The animals were fed with isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets, containing either 0 or 75 or 100 or 125 g of carob pods per kg of feed. At the end of the experiment, on the 180 day of age, carcass subcutaneous fat thickness, steak chemical composition and steak fatty acid profile were determined. The results of the experiment showed that the dietary addition of 75 or 100 g/kg carob pods increased body weight at slaughter and carcass weight. No significant effect was noticed on the other examined carcass parameters. Consequently, carob pods could be suggested as a potential feed for fattening pigs without any adverse effect on their meat quality.
