        External electric field induced hydrogen storage/release on calcium-decorated single-layer and bilayer silicene

        <P>Hydrogen storage and release are two essential parameters that define the efficiency of a hydrogen storage medium. Herein, we investigate the effects of the external electric field <I>F</I> on the adsorption–desorption of H<SUB>2</SUB> on a Ca-decorated silicene system (Ca–silicene) based on density functional theory calculations. Our study demonstrates that nine H<SUB>2</SUB> molecules per Ca atom can be adsorbed and 6.4 wt% H<SUB>2</SUB> can be adsorbed on Ca–silicene with an average binding energy of 0.19 eV per H<SUB>2</SUB>, while the appropriate <I>F</I> can be used to effectively enhance the hydrogen storage–release on the Ca–silicene system. The high synergetic effect may be attributed to the observation that <I>F</I> induces an enhancement of the charge transfer between H<SUB>2</SUB> molecules and the Ca–silicene system. Thus, the Ca–silicene system together with the synergy of <I>F</I> can efficiently facilitate H<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption–desorption, completing the whole hydrogen storage–release cycle.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The appropriate <I>F</I> can be used to effectively enhance the hydrogen storage–release on the Ca–silicene system. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4cp02638a'> </P>

        The evaluation of online course of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Medical Bachelor, Bachelor of Surgery international students during the COVID-19 epidemic period

        Background: During the COVID-19 epidemic period, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) course for international students of Medical Bachelor, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program in Zhejiang University has shifted from traditional classroom to online environment. This study aimed to investigate MBBS international students’ perception on online TCM course, and to assess the online learning efficacy. Methods: A total of 84 MBBS international students attending course of “Basic Traditional Chinese Medicine” during 2020 academic years at Zhejiang University were enrolled in this study. A quantitative questionnaire was respectively completed before and after the TCM course using a pretest–post-test design. By means of two online learning platforms, Learning in ZJU and DingTalk, TCM course was broadcast in both live and archived format to students. Results: A total of 48 participants completed both baseline and follow-up questionnaires. The majority of participants preferred face-to-face classroom learning (26, 54.17% of total) when compared with online learning. Students felt that the course had brought in much benefits (mean 3.88, SD 0.87), and they were satisfied with the course content (mean 3.83, SD 0.95). Students’ TCM related knowledge and their behaviors of discussion and consulting were significantly improved by online TCM course (all P < 0.001). Students’ awareness of the necessity of TCM education and their feeling of difficulty in learning TCM were significantly strengthened (P = 0.042, 0.025, respectively). Conclusion: Online learning is a good alternative for TCM course of MBBS international students when classroom learning is suspended, whereas it cannot replace the need for onsite and face-to-face learning.

      • Tuning electronic and magnetic properties of partially hydrogenated graphene by biaxial tensile strain: a computational study

        <P>Using density functional theory calculations, we have investigated the effects of biaxial tensile strain on the electronic and magnetic properties of partially hydrogenated graphene (PHG) structures. Our study demonstrates that PHG configuration with hexagon vacancies is more energetically favorable than several other types of PHG configurations. In addition, an appropriate biaxial tensile strain can effectively tune the band gap and magnetism of the hydrogenated graphene. The band gap and magnetism of such configurations can be continuously increased when the magnitude of the biaxial tensile strain is increased. This fact that both the band gap and magnetism of partially hydrogenated graphene can be tuned by applying biaxial tensile strain provides a new pathway for the applications of graphene to electronics and photonics.</P>

      • Induced Abortion and Breast Cancer: Results from a Population-Based Case Control Study in China

        Aim: To determine whether induced abortion (IA) increases breast cancer (BC) risk. Materials and Methods: A population-based case-control study was performed from Dec, 2000 to November, 2004 in Shanghai, China, where IA could be verified through the family planning network and client medical records. Structured questionnaires were completed by 1,517 cases with primary invasive epithelial breast cancer and 1,573 controls frequency-matched to cases for age group. The information was supplemented and verified by the family planning records. Statistical analysis was conducted with SAS 9.0. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, induced abortions were not found to be associated with breast cancer with OR=0.94 (95%CI= 0.79-1.11). Compared to parous women without induced abortion, parous women with 3 or more times induced abortion (OR=0.66, 95%CI=0.46 to 0.95) and women with 3 or more times induced abortion after the first live birth (OR=0.66, 95%CI =0.45 to 0.97) showed a lower risk of breast cancer, after adjustment for age, level of education, annual income per capita, age at menarche, menopause, parity times, spontaneous abortion, age at first live birth, breast-feeding, oral contraceptives, hormones drug, breast disease, BMI, drinking alcohol, drinking tea, taking vitamin/calcium tablet, physical activity, vocation, history of breast cancer, eating the bean. Conclusions: The results suggest that a history of induced abortions may not increase the risk of breast cancer.

      • Comparisons of Curative and Side Effects of Chemoradiotherapy among Xinjiang Han, Uigur and Kazakh Esophageal Carcinoma Patients

        Objective: This study aimed to explore the differences in the curative and side effects of chemoradiotherapy on esophageal cancer (EC) among Xinjiang Han, Uigur and Kazakh patients. Methods: 170 patients with IIA stage-IV of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were analyzed retrospectively. Based on different nationalities, they were divided into the Han, Uigur and Kazakh groups. The 1-, 2- and 3-year survival rates, incidence of the side effects (including hematological toxicities, radioactive esophagitis and percutaneous reactions) and application of antibiotics and harmonics were compared among the groups. There was no significant difference in the short-term curative effects among the Han, Uigur and Kazakh groups. The 1- 2- and 3-year survival rates of the three groups were 84%, 40%, 26%; 78%, 27%, 18%; and 60%, 21%, 12% ($x^2$=14.497, P<0.05). The incidence rate of hamatological toxicity ${\geq}$Grade 2 in the Kazakh group was significantly lower than that in the Han or Uigur group. Results: The incidence rates of radioactive esophagitis and percutaneous reactions Grade 2 in the Han group were significantly higher than those in the Uigur or Kazakh group. There was no significant difference in the types of applied antibiotics among the groups, but there were significant differences in the days of antibiotic application and proportion of patients receiving harmonics between the Hans and either of other groups. Conclusion: Chemoradiotherapy shows a better effect in the long-term survival rate among Han EC patients compared with Uigur or Kazakh EC patients. Uigur and Kazakh patients show a better tolerance to the side effects of chemoradiotherapy compared with Hans.

        A Study of Urodynamic Parameters at Different Bladder Filling Stages for Predicting Upper Urinary Tract Dilatation

        Purpose: To identify more accurate predictors of upper urinary tract dilatation (UUTD) in neurogenic bladder (NB) children, we studied the relationship among urodynamic parameters at different bladder filling stages, detrusor leak point pressure (DLPP) and UUTD. Methods: A total of 158 children (3–16 years) with NB were included and then divided into 2 groups according to whether their NB diagnosis was complicated with UUTD: the UUTD group (39 patients) and those without UUTD group (control group, 119 patients). The bladder filling phase was divided into 3 equal parts: the early, middle, and end filling stages. The bladder compliance (BC) and detrusor pressure (△Pdet) at each phase and DLPP at the end filling stage were recorded. Results: A BC<8 mL/cm H2O both in the middle and end stages is more specific than a BC<9 mL/cm H2O in the end stage (72%, 73%, vs. 66%), and △Pdet >8 cm H2O in the early stage, 20 cm H2O in the middle stage and 25 cm H2O in the end stage are more sensitive than △Pdet >40 cm H2O in the end stage (82%, 85%, 85%, vs. 49%). A DLPP cutoff value of 20 cm H2O showed higher sensitivity for predicting UUTD than 40 cm H2O. Conclusions: Low BC and a high △Pdet in the middle and end filling stages are more accurate factors than classic indicators for predicting UUTD. In addition, a DLPP value of >20 cm H2O in the end bladder filling stage shows high sensitivity.

        The pharmacokinetics of florfenicol were studied in healthy and vibriosis-infected large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) following administration of a single oral dose of 20 mg·kg(-1) at 25±2℃. After oral administration, florfenicol levels in tissues (liver, kidney, muscle, serum, and skin) were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. A two-compartment open model was used to describe the pharmacokinetics of florfenicol following oral administration. Compared to the healthy group, the absorption rate of vibriosis-infected fish significantly decreased, peak-time (Tmax) delayed, maximum concentration (Cmax) declined, total body clearance decreased, the elimination half-life (T1/2β) was extended, and the area under the curve increased. These results indicate that a 20 mg·kg(-1) oral dose of florfenicol administered once daily continuously for 4 or 5 days can be used for the treatment of Vibrio alginolyticus infection in large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea).

        Molybdenum Dioxide-Anchored Graphene Foam as a Negative Electrode Material for Supercapacitors

        Molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles of diameter 100 nm were anchoreduniformly to a three-dimensional (3D) graphene foam using an ultrasonicationassisteddeposition method. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopyindicated that the molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles had a monoclinic crystalstructure. The 3D graphene/MoO2 nanoparticle composite showed excellentpseudocapacitive ability as its specific capacitance reached 404 F g−1 at a scanrate of 2 mV s−1 in the negative potential range, −1.0 to −0.2 V, in a neutralsolution. Overall, the 3D graphene/MoO2 nanoparticle composite has greatpotential as an anode material for the next generation of high-performancesupercapacitors.

Based on a bent piecewise linear accumulated distribution generally found in the microarray data, a new detectable threshold finding method is proposed to filter genes with unreliable information in this paper. More reliable and reproducible data is produced for the subsequent data mining.

        Ultrafast UV Switch Based on ZnO-Ag Heterostructures

        ZnO-silver (Ag) heterostructure nanoparticle films were prepared by spin-coating, followed by annealing at 700°C for 2 h. The films were then used as UV photodetector which show high photoresponse. The heterostructure-film device displayed an ultrafast decay time of 18 ms and a rise time of 50 ms upon ultraviolet irradiation. Additionally, the time-dependent photocurrent upon UV switching reveals a rectangularly shaped profile, rarely reported in previous literature. The highly improved photoresponse properties of ZnO-Ag heterostructure-film device could be attributed to the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and depletion width reduction from the embedded Ag nanoclusters. Compared to a pure ZnO film, both the responsivity (Rλ) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the ZnO-Ag heterostructure-film photodetectors were improved more than 13-fold. This research provides a promising strategy for fabricating UV-photodetectors with ultrafast response.
