      • Functional Components and Antioxidant Effects of Colored Onions

        The antioxidant capacities, total phenolic contents (TPC), and total quercetin contents (TQC) of a red (Chenjujuck), a yellow (Sunpower), and a white (Grasier) onion cultivar were determined in this study. Onion was separated into edible portion and dry skin. In the case of edible portion, the yellow onion had the highest antioxidant activity, followed by the red onion. The white onion showed neither antioxidant activity nor quercetin compounds. On the other hand, the dry skin of the red onion showed higher antioxidant activity than yellow onion skin. The white onion skin had slight antioxidant activity, low TPC, and no quercetin compounds. In addition, the flavonoid compounds of the edible portion and dry skins of these colored onions were analyzed by UFLC(ultra-fast liquid chromatography). The major compounds were quercetin 3,4-diglucoside and quercetin 4- glucoside in yellow and red onion edible portion, whereas the major compounds in yellow and red onion skins were quercetin 4- glucoside, quercetin, and quercetin 3,4-diglucoside.

        Hypoglycemic Activity of the Hexane Extract of Oriental Melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Makino) Seeds and Its Active Compounds

        The aim of this work is to evaluate the potential of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Makino) seeds for the management of type 2 diabetes by controlling glucose absorption. The ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory effects of the hexane extracts from oriental melon seeds were investigated. A bioassay-guided fractionation technique was used to elucidate the principal active components. The results show that the hexane extract from oriental melon seeds exhibited high inhibitory activities against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase. The hexane extract was further fractionated into four sub-fractions. Among them, the sub-fraction F-1 exhibited the most potent anti-diabetic effect. The active components were isolated and identified by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Free fatty acids showed significant hypoglycemic activity (p < 0.001) and fatty acid composition influenced enzyme inhibitory activities. These results suggest that oriental melon seeds could be used to prevent type 2 diabetes.

        MADS-box genes (Schwarz-Sommer et al. 1990) contribute significantly to the development of inflorescences and flowers, e.g. by acting as floral meristem or organ identity genes (for recent reviews, see Thei?en and Saedler 1995; Thei?en et al. 1996;Riechmann and Meyerowitz 1997). Up to now, MADS-box genes have mainly been studied in the scientific context of developmental biology, and in eudicotyledonous model plants of little commercial value, such as Antirrhinum and Arabidopsis. The focus of our group is to apply our current knowledge about flower development to breeding research and evolutionary biology. Therefore, we are currently characterizing the MADS-box gene family in the important monocotyledonous crop plant maize (Zea mays ssp. mays), and in other phylogenetic informative taxa, such as the monocots lily (Lilium regale) and tulip (Tulipa gesneriana), the basal angiosperm Cabomba, and non-flowering plnats including the gymnosperm Gnetum gnemon and the ferns Ceratopteris and Ophioglossum.

        To investigate the anatomical characteristics of the compression (CW), opposite (OW) and side woods (SW) in Pinus densiflora the tree-ring widths and tracheid lengths therein were measured and compared. The sample tree was plated at Seoul forest from Uljin in 2004. The tracheid length was mea- sured separately in the earlywood and latewood. The most wide tree-ring width was measured in CW and than SW and OW. The length of tracheids had been gradually increased until 2000 by aging. After that, the lengths became more or less stable. Based on the measurement data, we could conclude that the sample tree formed the mature wood from 2000.

      • 日本의 古庭園에 關한 硏究 : 桂離宮庭園을 中心으로 on the basis of Katsura Imperial Villa garden

        Katsura Imperial Villa garden and Shugakuin Imperial Villa garden are the crea-tions in perfection where Japanese garden making tecnologies are exhibited to the fullest. The culminations of art combined with additional touches of new desgins surely make these gardens masterpieces of all gardens. The following passages summarize their main characteristics. 1. Katsura Imperial Villa gargen stands on the flat land extending as large as 58,314 square meters and consists of a series of rozis surrounded on all four sides. Here the nature is seen to fit into the cultural setting of the space. 2. Sukiya Style Shoin and Soan style tea house facing the pond are effective in creating a literary beauty where the garden and the architecture fuse into a single entity. Also the introduction of linear garden path and sight draws the garden into the reaim of modern art from that of classic. 3. There are three islands in center island i. e. one large island and two small ones. These island symbolize the three fairy islands of Bong Re Bang Jeong=main building of the temple, and Young Joo and serve to create a garden with three islands in a line The trend of the site planning could be identified with the newly introduced promontories and indented shoreline of the pond. Site planning of the pond garden form a triangular shape offering a varity of views. 4. The main components of the garden are the rock arrangement observed on artificial hills, waterfalls, streams and a pond, stepping stones of garden path, rock path, landscape ornament such as stone lantern and water basin. In addition to the beautiful scenery created for enjoyment, elegant entertainment was given at the tea garden. The open space provided for outdoor social gatherings is an outstanding fe-ature recognized in the circuit style garden. 5. There is no plantings having distinct features apart from the pine tree of su-miyoshi of Katsura Imperial Villa garden and the pine tree of a Thousand Kan at Shugakuin Imperial Villa garen. While Katsura Imperial Villa garden make much use of the stone material, shugakuin Imperial Villa garden places much more emp-hasis on plantings. Especially the stereograpic point picture provided by Imperial path, artificial hill of cycad, the area around earthen-bridge of Hotarutani, cherry tree in front of Shokatei teahouse, mixed planting of maple tree and rhododendron of Katsura Imperial Villa garden create beautiful sceneries. 6. The preservation of the point scenery described above together with other be-autiful sceneries in the garddn and planting patterns are strongly requested. These will serve as valuable materials for research, education, sightseeing and so forth. 7. The nature of tea garden, artistic creation rich in religious tone, could also be observed in the circulation of Katsura Imperial Villa garden and Shugakuin Impe-rial Villa garden. 8. one could not hide his deep emotion when one sees in the Wollp a-Roo teahouse a tablet reading Woll Pa-Chainese Character-written by an official envoy to Jap-an from Korea, So-Dang in 1604.

        정보통신기술(ICT)을 활용한 실과교육의 효과 분석 : '생활자원과 환경의 관리' 영역을 중심으로 Focused on the Area of 'Life Resources and Environmental Management'

        This study develops teaching and learning programs using ICT in the area of 'life resources and environmental management' of practical arts education, applies the program to actual class and analyzes its effects on cognitive side(knowledge) and affective side(attitude). For this, this study develops teaching and learning guide using. ICT at the unit of 'using resources' of the 6th practical arts education, divides 76 students of the 6th grade attending D elementary school in Gwangju metropolitan city into experimental group using ICT education and control group applying traditional class, conducts pretest and posttest and obtains the following results. The effects of education using ICT in this study were significantly different in cognitive side (knowledge), but there was no significant difference in affective side(attitude). It means that education applying ICT was effective in cognitive side(knowledge) in the area of 'life resources and environmental management', but it has a limitation in changing environmental practice attitude, the affective side. ICT based education makes the various learning activities and learner led learning beyond the restriction of time and space possible and contributes to the improvement of cognitive side. To the contrary, the results in definitive side showed that direct environmental experience and long-term and systematic environmental education are required.

      • 日本의 古庭園에 關한 硏究 : 修學院離官 庭園을 中心으로

        Shugakuin Imperial villa garden was built by the imperial family, and artificial technique was well harmonized with the description of the literary expression in nature, especially borrowed scenery technics was introduced into it. Some characteristics of the garden is summarized as follows by enumeration. 1. The area of shugakuin Imperial villa garden is 455, 000 square meters and the foot of mountain and the flat ground was utilized very harmously and techniques of building garden harmonized with nature was employed by dividing the garden into Simono-O-Chaya, Nakano-O-Chaya, and Kamino-O-Chaya. 2. A circuit was made three-dimentionally with the use of the configuration of the ground and intermediate view. Many mountains which continue mauntain after mountain, at a near view, at a middle view and at a distant view make the borrowed scenery and the prespect of the garden very effective. 3. It shows the characteristics of moulding of extensive tree trimming with using planting rather than stone material as garden material as far as possible. 4. The three-dimentional pint picture consisted of the circumference of Sam Bo Islandof the garden, the maple of momizitani, green pine trees, the extensive tree trimming of Nishihama, Cherries, are the pattern of garden planting. 5. The kind of planting are about seventy, much evergreens and proportional planting of ornamental trees and maple trees make the change of seasonable scenery. 6. Shugakiun Imperidal villa garden, the county and peasants, and all the circumstance of nature, were the only object of poetry or pictorial composition to the Emperor, Go-misu-Oh who last his political power and so had to be absorbed in cultural life. The extensive tree trimming before Rinun-tei and of Nishihama were the representation of resistance to the oppressive politics and the imperial power. Various mountains at a distantview let us vent our spite and wrath, while much planting and garden scenery will be attachment to his nation as the people, the emotional expression to console himself. 7. I think that Jo Sun stone lantern in Simono-o-chaya of the garden was the one which belongs to the Yi Dynasty period and that goreo lawn was introduced from Korea after the middle period of Ae Do. 8. Shugakuin Imperial villa garden is a circuit style garden(stroll-pond garden) which has been built with the use of the foot of a mountain and level ground three dimentiomally. 修學院離宮 庭園은 皇族에 依하여 創造된 것이며 自然속에 文學的인 表現을 描寫하여 人爲的인 手法이 잘 融合되고 있으며 特히 借景手法을 導入한 것이다. 여기에 그 庭園의 特徵을 列擧하면 다음과 같이 要約할 수 있다. 1. 修學院離宮 庭園은 그 面積이 455,000㎡이며 山麓과 平地를 잘 利用하였고 田園속에서 下, 中, 上의 茶屋으로 區分하여 自然과 融和된 造園手法을 갖었다. 그 自然의 大地形 및 景觀을 利用하여 廻遊를 立體的으로 하였고 近景, 中景 및 遠景에 많은 山들이 重復되것나 連지어 庭園의 借景과 眺望을 效果的으로 나타내고 있다. 3. 될 수 있으면 庭園에 石材를 排除하고 植栽를 主體로 하여 대예입의 造形的 特徵을 보이고 있다. 4. 修學院의 三保島 周邊과 紅葉谷의 단풍과 靑松 西濱의 대예입과 벚나무 및 단풍 等의 立體的 點景은 庭園植栽의 Pattern化한 것이 바람직 하다. 5. 庭園의 植栽種類는 約 70種이며 常綠樹가 많고 花木類 및 단풍 類가 있어 季節的 風景燮化를 이루고 있다. 6. 修學院離宮 庭園은 政治的 實權을 잃고 文化的 生活에 沒入할 수 밖에 없었던 後水屋天皇으로서는 田園과 農民 그리고 自然環境의 全部가 詩 또는 繪畵的 構圖의 對象일 뿐이었다. 憐雲亭前의 대예입은 西濱의 대예입은 德川幕府의 壓政에 反抗하며 皇權의 健在하는 浩然之氣의 表象이며 遠景의 多樣한 山峰들은 怨恨과 怒氣를 풀게 하고 많은 植栽와 田園風景은 百姓에로의 愛着과 自愚하려는 情緖的 表現일 것이다. 7. 修學院 下御茶屋에 있는 朝鮮燈籠은 李朝時代의 것으로 推定되며 高麗잔디는 江戶時代 中期 以後에 韓國에서 傳來된 것이라고 한다. 8. 修學院 庭園은 山麓과 平地를 立體的으로 하여 作庭된 池泉 廻遊式 庭園이다.
