Xenotextuality? Conceptualism, Materiality, and the Sublime

Disney Daniel James Philip 한국영어영문학회 2015 영어 영문학 Vol.61 No.3

In his essay, “On the contribution of poetry to the search for truth,” Hans-Georg Gadamer imagines lyric poems reflect processes of making ourselves at home, by pledging (Zusage) and proclaiming (Ansage) the image and sound of truthful-seeming statements (Aussage) of self-recognition— Gadamer’s aletheia. But what is the truth-telling of poetic texts which abandon lyric conventions? The lyric poem’s exclusive grip on materiality (in which sound extends sense) is challenged by the proclamations of Conceptualists, in which language is not employed to make resonant, musical sounds but is instead employed as a “sculptural or painterly material” (Dworkin xxxvi). These competing traditions (lyricism, Conceptualism) are somewhat synthesized in Christian Bök’s “xenotext,” which is both post-lyric poem and recursive ontological procedure; colonizing DNA from the Deinococcus radiodurans bacterium, this living poem proclaims brave new realms of possibility, a kind of onto-formalism which radically rematerializes language to gesture toward empty zones of future dimensions already glimpsed by Bök.

“. . . only a girl”? Labor, Gender, and Murderous Constituencies in Alice Munro`s “Boys and Girls”

        ( Dan Disney ) 한국영어영문학회 2016 영어 영문학 Vol.62 No.2

Alice Munro’s “Boys and Girls” is situated on the boundaries of a phallocracy breeding gendered captives, both both animal and human. The unnamed narrator in this Bildungsroman remembers her 11-year-old self, growing up on a farm and helping her father raise silver foxes for their pelts before she is shifted unwillingly from childhood to girlhood, and from the event-filled fields into (it is implied) her mother’s kitchen. Loaded into this transition are gender definitions impelled with “reproach and disappointment” (575); Munro’s tone remains largely elegiac. Presenting gender as performative, Judith Butler understands these constituencies as a “corporeal field of cultural play” (Butler 282); what seems clearest in Munro’s text is that each body is linguistically engendered, male language (authoritative and rendering silence) substantively defining and foreclosing psychic, affective, and spatially functional zones for female others. This paper reads Munro’s presentation of emergent gender constituencies as a constellation of power/knowledge discourses in which language situates subjects within differentiated symbolic orders; the grammar and syntax of male iterations of “girlhood” is read here as gesturing toward a protagonist’s imminent entrapment and enclosure.

      • Measuring Seasonality in Maldivian Inbound Tourism

Rabeeu, Ahmed,Ramos, Disney Leite,Rahim, Abdul Basit Abdul Smart Tourism Research Center 2022 Journal of smart tourism Vol.2 No.3

The tourism sector of the Maldives has seen rapid growth since its inception in 1972. One significant development is the transformation of the market composition in recent years. China has surpassed traditional European markets as the single largest source market. In this regard, this study seeks to assess the seasonality in the Maldivian tourism sector using a monthly dataset of visitor arrivals from 2003 to 2019. The seasonality ratio, the seasonality indicator, the Gini coefficient and the seasonal index were used to examine the seasonality patterns. The results of this study show that there are three distinct peaks (January to April, August, and November to December) and two off-peaks (May to July and September) periods. The findings also reveal that the rise of the Chinese market has significantly lessened the seasonality of Maldivian inbound tourism. Finally, some important implications are discussed.

Development of forensically important scuttle fly, Megaselia spiracularis Schmitz (Diptera: Phoridae) at ambient temperatures with distinguishing features of the larval instars

        Yong-Ming Lee,Disney R. Henry L.,Raja M. Zuha 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.3

Megaselia spiracularis Schmitz (Diptera: Phoridae) is a scuttle fly species of forensic importance and has been recorded colonizing human corpses in Malaysia, Korea and China. The necrophagous activity of M. spiracularis larvae on human corpses can be referred to estimate minimum postmortem interval (PMI min ) in death investi gation. However, developmental data of M. spiracularis derived from ambient fluctuating temperature is scarce and taxonomic descriptions to larval instars for species identification are still lacking. This research was con ducted to address these limitations by studying the development of M. spiracularis at fluctuating ambient tem peratures. From each sampling occasion, larval body lengths were obtained and samples were mounted on slides to determine larval instars based on taxonomic characteristics of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton, anterior spi racles and posterior spiracles. At fluctuating temperatures of 25–37 ◦ C and relative humidity of 47–93%, developmental duration of egg stage was 7–9.5 h; first instar larva, 9.5–17 h; second instar, 6–12 h, feeding third instar, 18–36 h; post-feeding third instar, 6–12 h; and pupa, 168–204 h. Accumulated degree hours for each developmental stage based on fluctuating ambient temperatures were also determined. The size of M. spiracularis larvae varied from 0.64–0.78 mm after eclosion to 5.20–5.95 mm before entering post feeding phase. The first, second and third instar larva could be distinguished mainly by the morphology of cephalopharyngeal skeletons, anterior spiracles and posterior spiracles. Developmental durations of M. spiracularis larvae and the larval instars can be used as references to estimate PMI min as this species is likely to be featured in future forensic cases.

Annual Occurrence Patterns and Three Dimensional Distribution of Mushroom Flies in Pleurotus ostreatus Cultivation Farms

        강민구,김승한,최치완,헨리디즈니,권오석,Kang, Min-Gu,Kim, Seung-Han,Choi, Chee-Wan,Disney, Henry L,Kwon, Oh-Seok Korean Society of Applied Entomology 2017 한국응용곤충학회지 Vol.56 No.2

Among flies inside mushroom growing rooms in three farms, Lycoriella ingenua and Megaselia tamilnaduensis were the most common and dominant species during Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation in Korea. In the past, generally, during the incubation period, a low density of mushroom flies was observed in all farms. After the first harvest, mushroom flies density tended to increase sharply. However, many mushroom flies were observed in the summer, despite that season corresponds to the incubation period. This is because annual cultivation systems provide a safe overwintering place compared to seasonal selective ones. The ecology of mushroom flies varies greatly according to the cultivation system. We confirmed that a fallow period reduced the density of mushroom flies. From a survey of the three dimensional distribution of mushroom flies in a growing room, we observed that M. tamilnaduensis showed more positive phototaxis and a higher variation per point of capture than that by L. ingenua. Through this study, two mushroom fly species were identified in the survey farms, with markedly different three dimensional distribution patterns.

Field measurements of wind-induced transmission tower foundation loads

        Savory, E.,Parke, G.A.R.,Disney, P.,Toy, N.,Zeinoddini, M. Techno-Press 1998 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.1 No.2

This paper discusses some of the findings arising from long-term monitoring of the wind effects on a transmission tower located on an exposed site in South-West England. Site wind speeds have been measured, together with the foundation loads at the base of each of the four legs. The results show good correlation between the wind speeds and leg strains (loads) for a given wind direction, as expected, for wind speeds in excess of 10 m/s. Comparisons between the measured strains and those determined from the UK Code of Practice for lattice towers (BS8100), for the same wind speed and direction, show that the Code over-estimates most of the measured foundation loads by a moderate amount of about 14% at the higher wind speeds. This tends to confirm the validity of the Code for assessing design foundation loads. A finite element analysis model has been used to examine the dynamic behaviour of the tower and conductor system. This shows that, in the absence of the conductor, the tower alone has similar natural frequencies of approximately 2.2 Hz in the both the first (transversal) and second (longitudinal) modes, whilst for the complete system and conductor oscillations dominate, giving similar frequencies of approximately 0.1 Hz for both the first and second modes.

Biocatalysis and Fermentation Technology : Lipid and Citric Acid Production by Wild Yeasts Grown in Glycerol

( Karla Silva Teixeira Souza ),( Rosane Freitas Schwan ),( Disney Ribeiro Dias ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2014 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.24 No.4

In this study, crude glycerol was used as a carbon source in the cultivation of wild yeasts, aiming at the production of microbial lipids and citric acid. Forty yeasts of different sources were tested concerning their growth in crude and commercial glycerol. Four yeasts (Lindnera saturnus UFLA CES-Y677, Yarrowia lipolytica UFLA CM-Y9.4, Rhodotorula glutinis NCYC 2439, and Cryptococcus curvatus NCYC 476) were then selected owing to their ability to grow in pure (OD600 2.133, 1.633, 2.055, and 2.049, respectively) and crude (OD600 2.354, 1.753, 2.316, and 2.281, respectively) glycerol (10%, 20%, and 30%). Y. lipolytica UFLA CM-Y9.4 was selected for its ability to maintain cell viability in concentrations of 30% of crude glycerol, and high glycerol intake (18.907 g/l). This yeast was submitted to lipid production in 30 g/l of crude glycerol, and therefore obtained 63.4% of microbial lipids. In the fatty acid profile, there was a predominance of stearic (C18:0) and palmitic (C16:0) acids in the concentrations of 87.64% and 74.67%, respectively. We also performed optimization of the parameters for the production of citric acid, which yielded a production of 0.19 g/l of citric acid in optimum conditions (38.4 g/l of crude glycerol, agitation of 184 rpm, and temperature of 30oC). Yarrowia lipolytica UFLA CM-Y9.4 presented good lipid production when in the concentration of 30 g/l of glycerol. These data may be used for production in large quantities for the application of industrial biodiesel.

Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysis Using Yeast Cellulolytic Enzymes

( Angelica Cristina De Souza ),( Fernanda Paula Carvalho ),( Cristina Ferreira Silva E Batista ),( Rosane Freitas Schwan ),( Disney Ribeiro Dias ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2013 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.23 No.10

Ethanol fuel production from lignocellulosic biomass is emerging as one of the most important technologies for sustainable development. To use this biomass, it is necessary to circumvent the physical and chemical barriers presented by the cohesive combination of the main biomass components, which hinders the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose into fermentable sugars. This study evaluated the hydrolytic capacity of enzymes produced by yeasts, isolated from the soils of the Brazilian Cerrado biome (savannah) and the Amazon region, on sugarcane bagasse pre-treated with H2SO4. Among the 103 and 214 yeast isolates from the Minas Gerais Cerrado and the Amazon regions, 18 (17.47%) and 11 (5.14%) isolates, respectively, were cellulase-producing. Cryptococcus laurentii was prevalent and produced significant β- glucosidase levels, which were higher than the endo- and exoglucanase activities. In natura sugarcane bagasse was pre-treated with 2% H2SO4 for 30 min at 150oC. Subsequently, the obtained fibrous residue was subjected to hydrolysis using the Cryptococcus laurentii yeast enzyme extract for 72 h. This enzyme extract promoted the conversion of approximately 32% of the cellulose, of which 2.4% was glucose, after the enzymatic hydrolysis reaction, suggesting that C. laurentii is a good β-glucosidase producer. The results presented in this study highlight the importance of isolating microbial strains that produce enzymes of biotechnological interest, given their extensive application in biofuel production.
