An aqueous extract of Cornus kousa Burg. leaves (ACK) that contained high amount of polyphenols showed significant antioxidant activity against diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and TNF-α-generated reactive oxygen species. ACK at concentrations of 10 and 50 μg/mL significantly inhibited TNF- α-induced adhesion of U937 pre-monocytic cells to HT-29 colon epithelial cells in a concentrationdependent manner. The reduced adhesion by ACK correlated with the suppressed expressions of monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 and interleukin (IL)-8, the major inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated chemokines. Moreover, ACK significantly suppressed TNF-α-induced translocation of redox-sensitive nuclear factor (NF)-κB as well as degradation of cytosolic I-κBα. The effective concentrations of ACK were much lower than that of 5-aminosalicylic acid (3.06 mg/mL), which is an active metabolite of sulfasalazine, a well-known drug used in the treatment of IBD. The results indicate that ACK may provide a potential benefit for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as IBD.

Oxidative stress and the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}B$ play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In the present study, we examined the effects of the ethanol extract of Platycarya strobilacea Sieb. stem (EPS) on TNF-$\alpha$-induced monocyte adhesion to HT29 human colon epithelial cells, an initial step of colon inflammation. EPS contained high amount of polyphenols ($0.241{\pm}0.017\;mg$ of catechin equivalent/g of extract) and showed substantial DPPH radical scavenging activity. In addition, EPS significantly suppressed TNF-$\alpha$-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase. Moreover, TNF-$\alpha$-induced monocyte adhesion to HT29 colon epithelial cells was significantly suppressed by EPS in a concentrationdependent manner. The reduced adhesion by EPS was correlated with suppressed expression of MCP-1 and IL-8, the major chemokines in IBD. EPS also prevented the TNF-$\alpha$-induced nuclear translocation of NF-${\kappa}B$, one of the redox-sensitive transcription factors, in a concentration-dependent manner. Taken together, our results suggest that the anti-oxidant components of EPS prevent TNF-$\alpha$-induced NF-${\kappa}B$ activation, chemokine induction, and monocyte adhesion at the site of intestinal inflammation.
Fabrication of Densely Distributed Silver Indium Selenide Nanorods by Using Ag+ Ion Irradiation

We prepared polycrystalline silver indium selenide thin films by vacuum evaporation on Si (100) substrates at a high temperature using a stochiometric powder. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. For the fabrication of densely distributed one-dimensional nanostructures of silver indium selenide on Si substrates, thermally evaporated films of AIS on Si (100) substrates were irradiated by incident 200-MeV Ag+ ions at a fluence of 5 × 1011 ion/cm2. At elevated substrate temperatures, silver indium selenide (AIS) exhibited a nanorod -like structure. The optical and the structural properties of the irradiated films were studied using UV-VIS-NIR Reflection spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and XRD. The controlled fabrication of such densely distributed onedimensional nanorods on a Si substrate by using the ion beam technique, we believe, will open a variety of applications, such as nanoelectronics and optoelectronics devices.
A Study on CRM Practices for Public sector Insurance Companies
Dinesh, Reetha KNU The Institute of Management Economy Research 2012 Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Vol.3 No.1
Organizations pursue a CRM strategy for the purpose of increasing business performance and value. However, firms face a multitude of organizational challenges associated with this endeavor. To reduce their risk of failure, it is suggested that firms undertake a deep analysis of organizational readiness prior to committing to a CRM initiative. Insurance sector is no exception to this fact. There is an increased need to concentrate on the various challenges thrown open by the public insurance firms in implementing CRM. Many insurance firms have invested into customer driven CRM but research indicates varying outcomes (Schmith 2004). While it is clear that there are significant issues involved in the CRM implementation and success and environment faced by the public sector. It is clear that business should have an easier time in applying CRM systems is the strategic value for public sector. With customers demanding more service and accessibility from administrators, public sector CRM software technologies have to offer best solutions for achieving process and cost objectives (Souder 2001). With results which go far beyond improved service delivery and include sustained cost reductions, increased customer knowledge and better employee morale, CRM software implementation and post product environments offer great upside value. Although there are material differences in public sector use of CRM strategy, they share at least one glaring similarity - they have much to gain from proven CRM software technology. As business methods cross over in the public sector, many government bodies are investigating how they can adopt and adapt various CRM models (Bleyer 2003). There is a need to understand the similarities and differences in public sector CRM to foster shared knowledge, business processes and planning functions to integrate disparate technologies and software platforms and then, of course, the organizational culture to support knowledge sharing (Peters 1997). For the public sector, there are clearly identified CRM processes which have resulted in increased profits and improved efficiency. These have focused on sales, marketing and customer service activities, which often operate along fundamentally different lines in various public sector insurance companies. Thus the present research paper makes an attempt to explore how public sector CRM methods can be adopted and subsequently adapted.

The objective of this study was to assess the external and internal quality traits of eggs in wholesale egg market in Colombo, Sri Lanka and the effect of storage period in egg quality traits in the same market after receiving the eggs. First, a total of 482 fresh eggs were randomly collected from the above market and external egg quality traits were determined and recorded according to the definitions given in the Specification for Chicken Egg SLS 959:1992. After that, a total of 288 fresh eggs were randomly collected and various external and internal egg quality traits were measured and recorded according to the standard procedures over a storage period of 1, 3 and 5d after receiving the fresh eggs to the wholesale market. Information about the shops was also collected using a pretested questionnaire. Using the recorded data, shape index, Haugh unit, albumen index and yolk index were calculated for each egg. Average weight, width, length and shape index of the eggs in the sample was 59.96g, 4.33cm, 5.78 cm and 75.03, respectively. Average shape index value was much closer to the standard value of 74. From the total sample 80.5% eggs had a normal and sound shape. However only 60.37% of the eggs are in the desirable quality range specified in SLS 959:1992, when the overall shell quality of the sample is considered based on shell cleanliness, defects and shape. The results of the current study indicated that eggs had significant(p<0.05) deterioration of all internal quality parameters tested with increasing storage time. However the effect was not significant(p>0.05) between the storage periods of 3 and 5 d after receiving eggs except for yolk color and yolk height. Desirable category of eggs had reduced and rejections had increased with the storage period. Main problems associated with the particular market were less space availability, higher percentages of dirty eggs, unavailability of proper packaging materials, no standard packaging system for eggs, and not implementing a standard grading system for eggs. Therefore the results of this study suggest that proper egg handling and storage conditions such as low temperature storage may be implemented to increase the proportion of desirable quality eggs in the above market.

Nitrophenol sensors have garnered interest in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, environment safety and explosives. Various methods have been proposed to detect 4-nitrophenol, but nitrophenol isomers such as 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol have been comparatively less studied. For the first time, the present work explores graphitic nanocarbon, i.e., carbon black (CB) interface for sensing of DNP. Two reduction potentials were noted at − 0.48 and − 0.64 V for o-NO2 and p-NO2 moieties, respectively, at CB/GCE. At the same time, bare GCE (glassy carbon electrode) shows a single reduction potential at − 0.7 V. The electrocatalytic effect and adsorption ability of the interface was studied from the DNP concentration effect. Scan rate and pH studies suggest that the CB acquires four electrons for NO2 reduction by the diffusion phenomenon. A broad detection range of 10–250 µM DNP with a very low detection limit of 0.13 (o-form) and 0.15 µM (p-form) was achieved using the CB interface. The real-time applicability of the fabricated sensor was evaluated using commercially available beverages with excellent recovery values. The stability, repeatability and reproducibility of the CB interface were successfully confirmed. Comparison of the sensing parameters of the developed sensor with those reported in literature reveals excellent detection limit and response time for the CB-interfaced DNP sensor, indicating its potential for environmental and commercial applications.

Lifting Idempotents and Projective Covers
Dinesh Khurana ...et al KYUNGPOOK UNIVERSITY 2001 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.41 No.2
A necessary and sufficient condition is given so that direct summands of a module, with projective cover, have projective covers. We characterize the rings over which direct summands of cyclic (respectively finitely generated) modules, with projective covers, have projective covers. Some sufficient conditions are given so that direct summands of arbitrary modules, with projective covers, have projective covers. Let L be a left ideal of a ring R. It is said that idempotents lift modulo L in R if for every X ∈ R with x² - x ∈ L there exists an idempotent e in R such that e - x ∈ L. It is proved that if idempotents lift modulo the Jacobson radical of a ring, then idempotents also lift modulo every one sided ideal contained in the Jacobson radical. Let I be an ideal of a ring R. We prove that if idempotents lift in R modulo every left ideal contained in I then, idempotents also lift in R modulo every right ideal contained in I. On taking I = R we get that left exchange rings are right exchange.
