High throughput genotyping for molecular breeding
Lindsay Dayton 한국육종학회 2012 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2012 No.07
The advances in marker technologies over the last two decades and particularly in the past few years have been astounding. These advances have meant that the accuracy and speed of obtaining results has been increasing while costs have been decreasing. Among the marker types, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) have not only been proven to be the most reliable and cost-effective markers available, they are also the most abundant in plants, which is why they are the most widely used for genotyping. SNPs have been used as tools for a large number of plant breeding applications including: marker assisted selection, marker assisted backcrossing, genome wide association, fingerprinting, quality control and protection of intellectual property. In cases in which little sequence data are available for a species of interest, transcriptome or genome sequencing have also proven valuable for the discovery of SNPs. In this presentation a number of practical examples will help to elucidate several of the high throughput genotyping tools available for the plant breeding community in order to make agronomically better crops for the future.
PLANNING FOR INCAPACITY - TOOLS AND STRATEGIES UNDER U.S. LAW
Kim Dayton 한양대학교 법학연구소 2015 Hanyang Journal of Law Vol.3 No.-
In the United States, adult persons who have cognitive disabilities, and those who have diseases or conditions that can lead to cognitive impairment in the future, are often the subject of protective proceedings that result in a loss of personal autonomy and dignity. Guardianship and conservatorship proceedings, for example, can mean that all or most of a person’s personal and financial decisions will be controlled by a third person appointed by the court, rather than by the individual. While guardianship and similar protective measures may be necessary in some cases, a variety of legal planning tools are available in the US that maximize decision-making autonomy and personal even by those who have long term cognitive disabilities. This article discusses these tools, which include durable powers of attorney, health care directives, and trusts. It explains what these planning tools are, how they are used, and what combination of planning is best suited to specific situations involving cognitively-impaired adults.
Systems for the Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities in the U.S.
A. Kimberley Dayton 한국후견·신탁연구센터 2018 후견과 신탁 Vol.1 No.2
“Adult protection” is a broad term encompassing a number of activities carried out by state or local entities that focus on protecting vulnerable adults (primarily the elderly and those with physical or cognitive disabilities) from abuse and exploitation. Adult Protective Services (APS) encompass both the protective activities of state or local agencies charged with investigating allegations of abuse and exploitation against the vulnerable elderly and persons with disabilities, and the federally mandated Long Term Care Ombudsman programs in each state, and the investigatory. While APS entities receive some federal funding through grants under the Older Americans Act and other legislation, it should be noted that the design and administration of APS schemes are almost exclusively a matter of state law.
