The Chronotopes in Caramelo and Comfort Woman

Death and love are in the loophole of methodology of the oppressed. In Comfort Woman, Beccah become a recorder of the lives of the spirits rather than a writer of obituaries which is her job after the death of her mother. She, inheriting Soon Hyo's stories, becomes a weaver in the chronotope of the dialogic heteroglossia inserting her mother's painful past into the stories of oppressed women in the history through storytelling and magicorealism. Celaya also learns to love her mestiza or Chicana identities that can subvert binary ideologies of (post) colonialism and patriarchy. However, in the future, she will have to painfully go through the inner struggles of crossing borders of “Chicano, indio, American Indian, mojado, mexicanos, immigrant Latino, Anglo in power, working class Anglo, Black, Asian” with differential consciousness. However, these crossing imaginary or physical borderlines as differential movement will bring about the coalition of the women from the third world, as Anzaldúa implies. This is, I argue, what ethnic women writers have pursued and will pursue in the chronotopes of dialogic heteroglossia.
On a Way to Material Marxism: On or Over Post-Marxism

This paper delineates how, with advent of (post) structural Marxism, ontic Marxism almost perishes but sustains its life through compromise with post-Marxism. To investigate this, the paper analyzes Louis Althusser’s structural Marxism and Fredrick Jameson's understanding of Althusser’s theories to reveal both theories’ attempt to reexamine and criticize ontic Marxists’ ideas of subject, totality, and history utilizing (post) structural linguistics and relevant theories. Yet, their efforts turns out to be partially successful because of inevitable paradoxes and contradictions in their own projects. Though Althusser tries to re-read and find a true Marxism getting over vulgar one and Jameson tries to reinterpret Althusser’s structural Marxism to suggest a compromised model of post-post-Marxism, it is still questionable if their projects turn out to be successful. Delving into these contentions, this paper pries into the polemics of language, subject, and history, such notions for which structural Marxists have been frequently criticized. In response to the critiques, post-Marxists have defended their positions condescendingly reiterating the recounts of how obsolete subject's language and discourse in structuralism and structural Marxism become. The next examinations target the idea of history, the most problematic concept both for structural Marxists and their critics because historicity and materialism may not be reconciled in contemporary Marxist's theory in spite of Fredrick Jameson's eclectic efforts. This contradiction also suggests that Marxism may not be ontic anymore if we do not accept the ambiguity of history and real praxis. Lastly, this paper explores Merleau-Ponty's theories to find an ontological Marxist theoretical position which might be a possible answer to my question.
Fuzzy Distance Estimation for a Fish Robot

We designed and implemented fish robots for various purposes such as autonomous navigation, maneuverability control, posture balancing and improvement of quick turns in a tank of 120 × 120 × 180㎝ size. Typically, fish robots have 30-50 × 15-25 × 10-20㎝ dimensions; length, width and height, respectively. It is essential to have the ability of quick and smooth turning to avoid collision with obstacles or walls of the water pool at a close distance. Infrared distance sensors are used to detect obstacles, magneto-resistive sensors are used to read direction information, and a two-axis accelerometer is mounted to compensate output of direction sensors. Because of the swing action of its head due to the tail fin movement, the outputs of an infrared distance sensor contain a huge amount of noise around true distances. With the information from accelerometers and e-compass, much improved distance data can be obtained by fuzzy logic based estimation. Successful swimming and smooth turns without collision demonstrated the effectiveness of the distance estimation.
Soft-Decision-Driven Channel Estimation for Pipelined Turbo Receivers

<P>We consider channel estimation specific to turbo equalization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication. We develop a soft-decision-driven sequential algorithm geared to the pipelined turbo equalizer architecture operating on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols. One interesting feature of the pipelined turbo equalizer is that multiple soft-decisions become available at various processing stages. A tricky issue is that these multiple decisions from different pipeline stages have varying levels of reliability. This paper establishes an effective strategy for the channel estimator to track the target channel, while dealing with observation sets with different qualities. The resulting algorithm is basically a linear sequential estimation algorithm and, as such, is Kalman-based in nature. The main difference here, however, is that the proposed algorithm employs puncturing on observation samples to effectively deal with the inherent correlation among the multiple demapper/decoder module outputs that cannot easily be removed by the traditional innovations approach. The proposed algorithm continuously monitors the quality of the feedback decisions and incorporates it in the channel estimation process. The proposed channel estimation scheme shows clear performance advantages relative to existing channel estimation techniques.</P>

Purpose: The study attempts to understand the effect of lumbar stability exercise of transcranial direct current stimulation on muscle activity and jump performance in soccer player. Methods: Transcranial direct current stimulation combined lumbar stability exercise have been implemented on 15 trainees and general lumbar stability exercise have been implemented on another 15 trainees for 30 minutes at 5 times per week during 8 weeks, and elector spinae, rectus abdominis, external abdominal obilique have been measured using to evaluate the muscle activity of the trunk. The counter movement jump, counter movement jump with arm swing have been measured using g-jump to measure the jump performance. Results: There was statistically meaningful difference on the elector spinae, rectus abdominis, external abdominal obilique in the muscle activity of the trunk and there was statistically meaningful difference on counter movement jump, counter movement jump with arm swing in the jump performance(p<.05). Conclusion: Based on above, it is realized that the transcranial direct current stimulation combined lumbar stability exercise is more effective than the general lumbar stability exercise on the improvement of the muscle activity of the trunk and the jump performance.

Low-Complexity Iterative Channel Estimation for Turbo Receivers

<P>This letter discusses a receiver-side channel estimation algorithm well-suited to turbo equalizers for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed technique is a Kalman-based channel estimator that runs on parallel single-input single-output (SISO) channels. Soft-decision-feedback interference cancellation is utilized to reduce the MIMO channel estimation problem into multiple SISO channel estimation problems. Unlike existing methods, however, the inherent correlation that exists among the output samples of the successive interference canceller is suppressed via careful puncturing of observation samples. The quality of soft decisions and channel estimates are also continuously monitored and incorporated in the Kalman filter update process.</P>
Comparative analysis of US and China artificial intelligence patents trends

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, the patenting activities related to the fields of AI is increasing worldwide. In particular, a share of patent filed in China has exploded in recent years and overtakes the numbers in the US. In the present study, we focus our attention on the patenting activity of China and the US. We analyzed 6,281 and 13,664 patent applications in the US and China respectively between 2008 and 2018, and belonging to the “G06F(Electric Digital Data Processing)”, “G06N(Computer Systems Based on Specific Computational Models)”, “H04L(Transmission of Digital Information)” and nine more relevant technological classes, as indicated by the International Patent Classification(IPC). Our analysis contributes to: first, the understanding of patent application trends from foreign countries filed in the US and China, 2) patent application status by applicants category such as companies, universities and individuals, 3) the development direction and forecasting vacant technology of AI according to main IPC code. Through the analysis of this paper, we can suggest some implications for patent research related to artificial intelligence in Korea. Plus, by analyzing the most recent patent data, we can provide important information for future artificial intelligence technology research.
