        Transport modelling in the age of big data

        New Big Data sources such as mobile phone call data records, smart card data and geo-coded social media records allow to observe and understand mobility behaviour on an unprecedented level of detail. Despite the availability of such new Big Data sources, transport demand models used in planning practice still, almost exclusively, are based on conventional data such as travel diary surveys and population census. This literature review brings together recent advances in harnessing Big Data sources to understand travel behaviour and inform travel demand models that allow transport planners to compute what-if scenarios. From trip identification to activity inference, we review and analyse the existing data-mining methods that enable these opportunistically collected mobility traces inform transport demand models. We identify that future research should tap on the potential of probabilistic models and machine learning techniques as commonly used in data science. Those data-mining approaches are designed to handle the uncertainty of sparse and noisy data as it is the case for mobility traces derived from mobile phone data. In addition, they are suitable to integrate different related data sets in a data fusion scheme so as to enrich Big Data with information from travel diaries. In any case, we also acknowledge that sophisticated modelling knowledge has developed in the domain of transport planning and therefore we strongly advise that still, domain expert knowledge should build the fundament when applying data-driven approaches in transport planning. These new challenges call for a multidisciplinary collaboration between transport modellers and data scientists.

        La filosofia mexicana en estudios pioneros del siglo XX

        El trabajo que se presenta tiene el fin de examinar tres grandes momentos de la filosofia mexicana del siglo pasado. El triunfo de la Revolucion Mexicana dio un gran impulso a las artes y a la cultura en general con un marcado acento en la exaltacion de lo mexicano. La filosofia en Mexico tambien cambio y se planteo como problema fundamental el desarrollo de una filosofia que encontrara las caracteristicas esenciales de los latinoamericanos y de los mexicanos, en especial, como contrapuestas con “lo norteamericano.” En el presente trabajo se analizan escritos centrales de diferentes pensadores que contribuyeron a moldear la filosofia en Mexico durante el Siglo XX al enfocar su atencion sobre Mexico y los mexicanos. Estos pensadores/filosofos son: Jose Vasconcelos, Samuel Ramos y Jose Gaos. Vasconcelos inicia la discusion del problema y propone una solucion en terminos abiertamente raciales. Se examina su obra La raza cosmica. Posteriormente se examina el refinamiento del problema sobre bases psicologicas en la obra El perfil del hombre y la cultura en Mexico. A continuacion, se estudia la propuesta de Jose Gaos y de sus discipulos del Grupo Hiperion para abordar la cuestion propuesta por los autores anteriores. Finalmente, se indican algunos errores metodologicos en las propuestas de estos pensadores y se apunta alguna posible solucion respetando el caracter transdiciplinario adquirido por la problematica. Una tesis principal que se sostiene en este articulo es que el debate sobre el problema de “lo mexicano” se sobreideologizo desde el principio, y que los prejuicios ideologicos de los pioneros mexicanos de este tipo de estudios contaminaron sus resultados. La importancia de este estudio radica en que pueden arrojar indicios sobre la forma apropiada de conducir este debate en el siglo XXI reformulando preguntas y metodos de estudio.

        Nonlinear Observer-based Active Control of Ground Vehicles with Non Negligible Roll Dynamics

        In this paper we present an observer–based nonlinear controller for lateral and yaw velocity, for a vehiclein which the roll dynamics can not be neglected. The observer estimates the lateral velocity, and the roll positionand velocity. This technique is based on measurements of the longitudinal and lateral accelerations, longitudinalvelocity, yaw rate and steer angle, usually available in modern vehicles. The nonlinear observer ensures exponentialconvergence of the estimations. The test maneuvers, obtained with the full–vehicle CarSim model under differentroad adhesion conditions, have been used to check the controller performance, as well as its robustness with respectto parameter variations.

        Vehicle Reference Generator for Collision-free Paths

        This paper presents a reference generator for ground vehicles. The generated trajectories avoid collisionswith obstacles, and can be used for vehicle autonomous driving or for active control of manned vehicles. Thisgenerator integrates artificial forces of potential fields of the object surrounding the vehicle. The potential fields areadapted to the vehicular environment on a road. The reference generator is used with a dynamic controller to ensurethe tracking of the accident-free reference. The performance of the proposed generator-based controller is tested ona simulated road scenario.
