Objectives: Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy (FCST) is a new physiologic therapeutics developed in Korea as a meridian yinyang balance approach. The theory of yinyang balance has been at the core of health enhancement approach of meridian and acupuncture medicine ever since its start. Methods: Introductory overview of FCST is presented in relation with meridian yinynag balance theory. Results: As the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related tissues have direct interconnection with brainstem proprioceptive or motor systems and the face is where all the meridians converge, FCST applies a fine adjustment of the posture of TMJ as a treatment tool for neurologic conditions or meridian imbalances. Conclusions: Highly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to adjust various subset aspects of yinyang balance are developed within FCST, which is supposed to be one of major contributions to natural healing.

The present study investigated Chinese-speaking children’s interpretations of the simplex reflexive ziji and the complex reflexive taziji. The main issues addressed included the effect of non-structural information (i.e., verbal classification and noun prominence) on children’s interpretations of ziji and taziji. Apart from these factors, contextual effect was also considered. A yes/no judgment task was designed to elicit participants’ interpretations of ziji and taziji. The participants in the study consisted of sixty Chinese-speaking children who were divided into three experimental groups: G1 (kindergarteners aged five and six), G2 (second graders aged seven and eight), and G3 (fourth graders aged nine and ten). In addition, twenty Chinese-speaking adults were recruited as the control group. The major findings are summarized as follows: First, all three child groups preferred long-distance binding of ziji and taziji. The adult group showed no significant preference when interpreting ziji, but showed significant preference for local binding when interpreting taziji. Context affected the children’s interpretations of both reflexives. When context was provided, more long-distance interpretations were elicited, same for the adults. Second, verb types influenced the children’s interpretations. The children preferred the local interpretation with reflexive (zizhi) verbs and the long-distance interpretation with irreflexive (tazhi) verbs, same for the adults. Finally, NP prominence determined the children’s interpretations of ziji and taziji. The children preferred an agent or animate antecedent for reflexives, same for the adults.

Sulfide control is a vital issue affecting the regional air quality and operational safety in sewage treatment processes. The conventional sulfide removal techniques are sophisticated industrial processes which require large operational footprint or are related to hazardous chemicals. In this study, the performance of elemental sulfur recovery from a simple micro-aeration process with metal-TCPP ((5,10,15,20)-tetrakis-p-carboxyphenylporphyrin) was investigated through laboratory experiments. A minimum of fourfold enhancement of elemental sulfur recovery was achieved from sulfide dissolved wastewater with the addition of nickel (II) TCPP, which demonstrated the highest among seven various types of transition metal-porphyrin complexes in the 3d block elements. The optimized reaction conditions resulted in 72.53% sulfur recovery with the addition of only 4.5 ppm nickel into the solution. The catalyst significantly improves the recyclability and life-cycle of the water-based absorbent and provides benefits to odor control and resource recovery.

Transgene-tagged mutants of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were generated by random insertional mutagenesis for screening of mutants of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism. Approximately 2,500 insertion mutants tagged with the aph7” gene were produced from one mutagenesis in three weeks. To establish a rapid screening system for numerous insertional lines, whole cell extracts of 100 insertional lines were subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and gas chromatography (GC) analysis combined with multivariate analysis. Mutant lines 28, 67, and 90 showed dramatic differences in the carbohydrate (1,000~1,200 cm-¹) and amide (1,500~1,700 cm-¹) regions of the FT-IR spectrum compared to wild type strain CC-124. Separate GC analysis also showed that 16:0 iso, palmitic acid (16:0), and oleic acid (18:1) were the major fatty acids in the wild type strain. In mutant 80, the relative content ratio of 16:0 iso in total fatty acids was significantly lower than in wild type, whereas the ratios of palmitic acid and oleic acid to 16:0 iso were higher. In mutant 95, the ratio of 16:0 iso to total fatty acids was increased, whereas ratios of palmitic acid and oleic acid to 16:0 iso were decreased. In particular, mutant 57 showed remarkably different fatty acid patterns with novel peaks of long-chain fatty acids having more than 20 carbon atoms. The results of this study show that FT-IR and GC combined with multivariate analysis enable rapid selection of mutants of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism in C. reinhardtii.
Research on Near Infrared Spectroscopy Application for Aflatoxin Testing on Rice

Rice is one of the most important staple food in the world. In many countries, environments with high temperature/humidity may provide favorable conditions for fungal propagation and production of aflatoxins during rice storage. Aflatoxin B<sub>1</sub> (AFB<sub>1</sub>), one of the secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, is particularly carcinogenic to humans. People might very likely cause severe illness once rice is contaminated by aflatoxins. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a nondestructive method for rapid and accurate detection of the AFB<sub>1</sub> content in rice. In the present study, evaluation of AFB<sub>1</sub> contaminated rice were conducted by using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique with chemometrics. NIR Spectra and the AFB<sub>1</sub> contents of the artificially contaminated rice samples were measured by FOSS NIRS 6500 spectrometer and LC-MS/MS, respectively. Modified partial least square regression (MPLSR), a commonly used multivariate analysis method was then used to build calibration models. In summary, NIRS associated with chemometrics could provide a useful tool for rapid and accurate detection of AFB<sub>1</sub> content in rice.

As Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum remains a major economic problem for the poultry industries of countries with no efficient control measures, we presented a multidrug resistance strain S06004 (isolated from a clinically sick chicken in China in 2006) for genome sequencing. The genome comparison showed that the strain contained two prophages, the ST104 and prophage-4 (Fels2) of E. coli LF82, which were not detected in the only published genomes of S. Pullorum RKS5078 and CDC1983-67. In addition, the GyrA Ser83 point mutation, drugresistant genes, and many antibiotic pump systems that are present in S06004 may be contributing to the multidrug resistance of this strain.

Aims: Our clinical study showed that transection site (body) and staple sizes (>2.5mm) were key factors contributing to the occurrence of postoperative pancreatic fistua( POPF). If we can create a neck (thin pancreas) on the body of the pancreas by slowly compressing before cutting using another clamp (double clamping) to allow optimal situation for 2.5mm staples, then the occurrence of POPF and leakage can be significantly reduced. Such a study is the first study in literature done on a well preserved cadaver Methods: Three adult cadavers were used, with each pancreas exposed for convenience but with equipment of laparoscopy to showcase assure that the technique can be done laparoscopically. Each pancreas was cut at multiple sites: one cut at each neck and tail, and three cuts each on the body of the pancreas. Each cut different staple size ( 2.5 mm and 3.8 mm) and the clamping method (single or double). The leakage was checked by three steps: gross observation, probing with catheter, and methylene blue. Results: Cuts performed with 2.5 mm staple and/or double clamping showed no leakage on both neck and body region. Cuts with both 3.8mm staple and single clamping technique show leakage on body region but no leakage at the neck and tail. Conclusions: The result had supported the hypothesis of double clamping method and smaller staple can reduce the chance of leakage and therefore reduce the chance of fistula after the operation.

The purpose of this study is to identify the strategies that Ocean Park used to face different kinds of threats and challenges, and discover the success factors that transformed the park from a local theme park with little global vision and recognition into one of the most popular amusement parks in the world. The major challenges include the Financial Crisis in 1997, the closure of Water Park in 1999, the outbreak of SARS in 2003 and, most critically, the emergence of Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005. Based on our analysis on relevant data, we found that the key success factors of Ocean Park are speedy repositioning and flexible in coping with major challenges by adopting relevant strategic actions such as (1) redefining the market position, (2) adding innovative attraction, education, and charity programs, (3) creating effective social cause marketing with UNICEF, and (4) committing to major redevelopment programs. We believe that Ocean Park will have great development and performance if it maintains these factors. Hopefully, this study will be useful in understanding and exploring the success of a theme park or a business in Hong Kong.

To understand better the mechanisms that regulate the water stress response in wheat, we conducted a comparative analysis of transcript profiles in roots from two wheat genotypes -- drought-tolerant ‘Luohan No. 2’ (LH)and drought-susceptible ‘Chinese Spring’ (CS). In LH roots,3831 transcripts displayed changes in expression of at least two-fold over the well-watered control when drought treatment was applied. Of these, 1593 were induced while 2238 were repressed. Relatively fewer transcripts were drought-responsive in CS; i.e., 1404 transcripts were induced and 1493 were repressed. In common between LH and CS,569 transcripts were induced and 424 transcripts were repressed. In all, 689 transcripts (757 probe sets) identified from LH and 537 transcripts (575 probe sets) from CS were annotated and classified into 10 functional categories. Among those annotated transcripts from LH and CS that had fold-change ratios of at least 4, 92 induced transcripts were common to both, while 23 transcripts were specifically induced in LH. Gene ontology analysis of these induced genes showed highly significant enrichment for multiple terms related to abiotic stimuli, organic acid biosynthesis,and lipid metabolism. This suggests that these gene groups play important roles during the stress response in LH and CS, and might also be responsible for differences in drought tolerance between those genotypes.
