        Flower cultivation regimes aff ect apocarotenoid accumulation and gene expression during the development of saff ron stigma

        The quality of commercial saff ron largely depends on apocarotenoid levels. Whether they are aff ected by diff erent fl owercultivation regimes remains unknown. In present study, apocarotenoid levels and the expression profi les of 12 genes relatedto apocarotenoid biosynthesis between fi eld- and indoor-cultivated Crocus sativus L. were analyzed during stigma development. Under both cultivation regimes, apocarotenoid accumulation and gene expression showed similar profi les, fi rstsharply increasing and then gradually decreasing with stigma development, which suggested the coordinated function ofgene expression and apocarotenoid accumulation. However, the rate of increase/decrease varied widely between two blossomregimes at diff erent developmental stages. Based on correlation analysis, βCH1 and ZDS seemed to play a more crucial rolein apocarotenoid accumulation under both cultivation regimes. At anthesis, the total apocarotenoid level in saff ron cultivatedin the fi eld was higher than that cultivated indoors. This may be due to lower gene expression levels in the apocarotenoidpathway, especially βCH1 , ZDS , and CCD2 , and higher CCD4a and NCED expression in the competitive pathway in saff roncultivated indoors than that in the fi eld, which indicated higher conversion in apocarotenoid biosynthesis fl ux from crocinsand picrocrocin synthesis to β-ionone and the ABA biosynthetic branch in saff ron cultivated indoors. These results providevaluable information for modifying planting mode to enhance saff ron quality.

        A comprehensive analysis and comparison between vacuum and electric oven drying methods on Chinese saffron (Crocus sativus L.)

        The red stigmas of saffron are one of the mostexpensive spices in the world and serve as a traditionalChinese medicine. More saffron has been cultivated inChina, and different drying technologies have been studied. However, a comprehensive and comparative analysis ofdifferent drying approaches has not been well studied. Inthis study, we compared electric oven and vacuum ovendrying approaches on saffron. We found saffron was driedquicker under high vacuum drying mode with high temperatureand the quicker drying rate provided, the moreopen microstructural interstices on the saffron surface. Both methods were best fit to Midilli and Kucuk model. Besides, the coloring, aroma and bitterness strength afterdrying showed the similar results. In sum, our data suggestedthe optimal drying temperature was 100 C for20 min for two evaluated methods, however consideringthe machine cost, the electric oven drying would be the firstchoice.

        We present here a case of recurrent rectal cancer liver metastasis that was managed with ante situm liver resection under total vascular exclusion (TVE) and venovenous bypass with hypothermic perfusion. A 58-year-old man who suffered with rectal cancer liver metastasis was transferred to our hospital in January 2006. A left lateral sectionectomy had been previously performed. Recurrent lesion developed in segments I, IV and VIII one year after the first hepatectomy. The tumor was 5 cm in diameter and it involved the confluence of the hepatic veins and the retrohepatic vena cava. An incomplete tumor-free margin and massive bleeding were expected with performing a conventional liver resection, together with vena cava reconstruction. Therefore, we planned an ante situm liver resection under TVE and venovenous bypass with hypothermic perfusion. After adhesiolysis, hilar dissection was carried out. The inflow to the medial segment was interrupted, and then the liver and inferior vena cava (IVC) were mobilized fully. During controlling the bleeding of a short hepatic vein, we found adhesion of the hepatocaval portion. Therefore, TVE and venovenous bypass were performed along with suprahepatic IVC transection. The long conduit of V5 was preserved during hepatic parenchymal dissection, and the paracaval portion of the caudate lobe was readily detached from the IVC. The suprahepatic IVC was reconstructed after V5 reconstruction with using the saphenous vein. Portal vein anastomosis was then conducted. After reperfusion, an end-to-side anastomosis was performed between the saphenous vein graft and the IVC. Finally, a Roux-en- Y hepaticojejunostomy was carried out. The patient remains well without recurrence 12 months after the last operation.

        Simulation and Experimental Investigation of Impact Damage in Composite Shell

        <P>In this paper, the energy absorption characteristics on extruded aluminum box-section strengthened with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates and/or foam material were investigated under impact loading. Impact tests using a pneumatic impact tester were conducted with the specimens in three-point bending flexure with consideration given to the side-door impact beams in vehicles. The absorbed energy to the specimen during the impact was determined from the loaddisplacement curve, which was obtained from the strain gauge attached to the impactor and the laser displacement transducer. From the results, it was found that the strengthening by externally bonding with CFRP laminates improved the impact-induced energy absorption. Also, the effect of the improvement was clearly seen in the case of the use of filling form material in the aluminum extrusion together with attaching CFRP laminates.</P>

        High-Velocity Impact of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Laminates

        <P>The response of Carbon/epoxy composites under high velocity impact was investigated experimentally. The strain rate dependent behavior of T300 Carbon/epoxy matrix composite in tension is studied experimentally by split Hopkinson bar technique. Dynamic stress-strain plot was obtained and compared with the quasi-static tensile test results. The results of the study indicate that Carbon/epoxy composites are strain rate dependent materials. Stacking sequence has a significant effect on the material response. Tensile strength of the composites all increased with increasing strain rate. And failure strain decreased when strain rate increased.</P>

        Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Composite Shell Under Impact

        Large deflection dynamic responses of laminated composite cylindrical shells under impact are analyzed by the geometrically nonlinear finite element method based on a generalized Sander's shell theory with the first order transverse shear deformation and the von-Karman large deflection assumption. A modified indentation law with inelastic indentation is employed for the contact force. The nonlinear finite element equations of motion of shell and an impactor along with the contact laws are solved numerically using Newmark's time marching integration scheme in conjunction with Akay type successive iteration in each step. The ply failure region of the laminated shell is estimated using the Tsai- Wu quadratic interaction criteria. Numerical results, including the contact force histories, deflections and strains are presented and compared with the ones by linear analysis. The effect of the radius of curvature on the composite shell behaviors is investigated and discussed.

        A refractive mode technique was suggested for solving a refractive coefficient (n), with which refractive index of GFRP composites, balsa and epoxy. A method of wind turbine blade composites having one and two saw-cuts delaminations was utilized and scanned based on the E-field vector. The time of flight in T-ray using evaluating a T-ray time-domain spectroscopy with the wind turbine blade. Also, the difference of E-field influence was compared with that in the GFRP and CFRP composites.

        전신성홍반성낭창과 관련된 폐고혈압 환자에서의 성공적인 임신

        폐고혈압은 전신성 홍반성 낭창의 합병증으로 드물고 생명을 위협할 수 있다. 현재까지 임신 중 전신성 홍반성 낭창의 합병증으로 동반된 폐고혈압 증례는 5증례로 그 중 네 증례는 분만 후 사망하였고 한 증례만이 분만 후 생존한 것으로 보고되고 있다. 본 증례는 28세의 여성이 임신 전 전신성홍반성 낭창을 포함한 어떤 면역학적 질환의 과거력이 없이 임신 22주에 전신성 홍반성낭창과 관련된 폐고혈압이 발생하였으나 진단 즉시 약물요법을 시행하였다. 태아는 3~10 백분위의 자궁내태아성 장저하였고 자궁동맥의 도플러검사상 이완기 패임 현상이 보였으나 임신 38주에 여아 2,400 g의 신생아를 자연분만 하였고 분만 후 특별한 합병증 발생이 없는 성공적인 임신과 분만을 경험하였기에 이에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Pulmonary hypertension is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and 5 cases has been previously documented in pregnancy. Four cases died after delivery and only one case was alive. We describe the case of a 28-year-old pregnant woman with pulmonary hypertension related to SLE with no previous history of immunologic disease including SLE. Diagnosis was made at 22 weeks of gestation. Medication including prednisolone and hydroxychloroquinone was commenced immediately and continued throughout the pregnancy. On fetal sonogram, the fetal growth was 3~10 percentile and diastolic notch of uterine arteries was noted. However, a healthy baby girl weighing 2,400 g was born in planned vaginal delivery at gestation week 38. There were no postpartum complications.

        Sliding Mode Control of Three-Phase Four-Leg Inverters via State Feedback

        To optimize controller design and improve static and dynamic performances of three-phase four-leg inverter systems, a compound control method that combines state feedback and quasi-sliding mode variable structure control is proposed. The linear coordinate change matrix and the state variable feedback equations are derived based on the mathematical model of three-phase four-leg inverters. Based on system relative degrees, sliding surfaces and quasi-sliding mode controllers are designed for converted linear systems. This control method exhibits the advantages of both state feedback and sliding mode control. The proposed controllers provide flexible dynamic control response and excellent stable control performance with chattering suppression. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by conducting simulations and experiments.

        Characterization of Fiber Direction Influence in CFRP Composites Using Advanced NDE Techniques

        A nondestructive technique would be very useful. Advanced NDE T-ray (terahertz ray) techniques of technology and instrumentation has provided a probing field on the electromagnetic spectrum. However, the T-ray is limited in order to penetrate a conducting material to some degree. Here, the T-ray would not go through easily the CFRP composite laminates since carbon fibers are electrically conducting while the epoxy matrix is not. So, investigation of terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) was made and reflection and transmission configurations were studied for a 48-ply thermoplastic PPS(poly-phenylene sulfide)-based CFRP solid laminate. It is found that the electrical conductivity of CFRP composites depends on the direction of unidirectional fibers.
