Universal Statistics for Chemical Abundances in a Reproducing Cell
Chikara Furusawa,Kunihiko Kaneko 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.50 No.1I
Two universal statistical laws in the reaction dynamics of reproducing cells are reported that appear as a result of consistency between molecular replication and cell reproductions as a whole. First, the overall abundances of chemicals in a cell, when ordered by magnitude and plotted as a function of their rank, obey a power law with an exponent close to .1. Second, the distribution of abundances for each chemical species measured over many cells obeys a log-normal distribution. The ubiquity of these two laws is confirmed theoretically. By means of a model with a catalytic reaction network, these two laws hold universally whenever a cell exhibits efficient self-reproduction. The origin of the laws is explained theoretically by noting the cascade structure of catalytic reactions. We briefly mention experimental support for the laws by using data from gene expression analyses.
Electric polarization observed in single crystals of multiferroicLu2MnCoO6
Chikara, S.,Singleton, J.,Bowlan, J.,Yarotski, D. A.,Lee, N.,Choi, H. Y.,Choi, Y. J.,Zapf, V. S. American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review B Vol.93 No.18

We report electric polarization and magnetization measurements in single crystals of double perovskite Lu2MnCoO6 using pulsed magnetic fields and optical second harmonic generation in dc magnetic fields. We observe well-resolved magnetic field-induced changes in the electric polarization in single crystals and thereby resolve the question about whether multiferroic behavior is intrinsic to these materials or is an extrinsic feature of polycrystals. We find electric polarization along the crystalline b axis, that is suppressed by applying a magnetic fields along the c axis, and advance a model for the origin of magnetoelectric coupling. We furthermore map the phase diagram using both capacitance and electric polarization to identify regions of ordering and regions of magnetoelectric hysteresis. This compound is a rare example of coupled hysteretic behavior in the magnetic and electric properties. The ferromagneticlike magnetic hysteresis loop that couples to hysteretic electric polarization can be attributed not to ordinary ferromagnetic domains, but to the rich physics of magnetic frustration of Ising-like spins in the axial next-nearest-neighbor interaction model.

Drawing a Line between Literal and Idiomatic Meanings Based on Supervised WSD
( Chikara Hashimoto ),( Daisuke Kawahara ) 경희대학교 언어연구소 2008 언어연구 Vol.25 No.2
Some phrases can be interpreted either idiomatically (figuratively) or literally in context, and the precise identification of idioms is indispensable for full-fledged natural language processing (NLP). To this end, we have constructed an idiom corpus for Japanese. This paper reports on the corpus and the results of an idiom identification experiment using the corpus. The corpus targets 146 ambiguous idioms, and consists of 102,846 sentences, each of which is annotated with a literal/idiom label. For idiom identification, we targeted 90 out of the 146 idioms and adopted a word sense disambiguation (WSD) method using both common WSD features and idiom-specific features. The corpus and the experiment are the largest of their kind, as far as we know. As a result, we found that a standard supervised WSD method works well for the idiom identification and achieved an accuracy of 89.25% and 88.86% with/without idiom-specific features.
