Rong-Her CHIU,Taih-Cherng LIRN,Chia-Yi LI,Bing-Yan LU,Kuo-Chung SHANG 한국해운물류학회 2011 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.27 No.3
This study focused on the development of FTPZs in Taiwan and examined factors influencing business activities in FTPZs and their degree of importance for improving the operational environment in FTPZs. A performance assessment of companies since operating their businesses in FTPZs was also undertaken. Data for the study were obtained from a questionnaire survey distributed to MNCs operating in FTPZs in Taiwan. The importance-performance analysis (IPA) technique was employed to analyse the survey results. Five factors were found to have a high degree of importance for business operations in FTPZs: government administration efficiency, cheap rates and charges, simplified customs procedures, clear regulations, and free tax incentives. Further, results indicated that firms in FTPZ had increased their performance in terms of reputation, investment, customer satisfaction, and revenue. The study provides insight into the evaluation and policy suggestions of FTPZ for government in Taiwan.

Tourist arrivals represent popularity of a recreation site. However it could be changed due to accessibility, weather, and natural disaster. These factors are complex and their effects on tourist arrival are mixed. This study applies switching regression approach to assess impact of natural disasters on tourist arrivals in the popular forest recreation and education site, Xitou Nature Education Area (XNEA), Taiwan. Natural disaster in a tourist destination cause environmental changes which impact short- and long-term changes on tourist arrivals. Precisely estimating the impacts on tourist arrivals could therefore provide an insight to management. The results show that (1) Typhoon Herb reduced tourist arrivals by an estimated 530 thousand over three years; (2) the Chichi earthquake caused a 2.59 million loss in tourist arrivals over seven years; (3) Typhoons Toraji and Nari resulted in a 360 thousand reduction in tourist arrivals over three years; and (4) Typhoon Mindulle reduced tourist arrivals by 80 thousand over a one-year period.
New Isolated Single-Phase AC-DC Converter for Universal Input Voltage
Ming-Rong Lee,Lung-Sheng Yang,Chia-Ching Lin 전력전자학회 2013 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.13 No.4
This paper investigates a new isolated single-phase AC-DC converter, which integrates a modified AC-DC buck-boost converter with a DC-DC forward converter. The front semi-stage is operated in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to achieve an almost unity power factor and a low total harmonic distortion of the input current. The rear semi-stage is used for step-down voltage conversion and electrical isolation. The front semi-stage uses a coupled inductor with the same winding-turn in the primary and secondary sides, which is charged in series during the switch-on period and is discharged in parallel during the switch-off period. The discharging time can be shortened. In other words, the duty ratio can be extended. This semi-stage can be operated in a larger duty-ratio range than the conventional AC-DC buck-boost converter for DCM operation. Therefore, the proposed converter is suitable for universal input voltage (90~264 Vrms) and a wide output-power range. Moreover, the voltage stress on the DC-link capacitor is low. Finally, a prototype circuit is implemented to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

Background: The pressure ulcer is a complication from dementia. The aim of this study is to study the association between the developing of pressure ulcers and the use of acupuncture therapy in patients with dementia. Methods: We performed a retrospective 1:1 propensity score-matched cohort study to investigate the association between acupuncture therapy and the risk of pressure ulcers in patients with dementia. Results: A total of 8,994 patients were identified, 237 patients in the acupuncture cohort and 362 patients in the no-acupuncture cohort developed pressure ulcers. A reduced cumulative incidence of pressure ulcers was observed in the acupuncture cohort (P < .001). The association between acupuncture and reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers was not affected by sex, age, residence, income, or comorbidities. The variables of etiologies to cause dementia did not change the final result. In the subgroups analyses, the patients without medication for dementia controlling had significant lower rate of pressure ulcers development when they had accepted acupuncture therapy (log-rank test, P <.001). Conclusion: Our results revealed the association between acupuncture therapy and a reduced incidence of pressure ulcer development in patients with dementia. This finding offers important ideas for further research.

A site-specific CFD study of passing ship effects on multiple moored ships
Chen, Hamn-Ching,Chen, Chia-Rong,Huang, Erick T. Techno-Press 2019 Ocean systems engineering Vol.9 No.1
A local-analytic-based Navier-Stokes solver has been employed in conjunction with a compound ocean structure motion analysis program for time-domain simulation of passing ship effects induced by multiple post-Panamax class ships in the exact condition of a real waterway. The exact seabed bathymetry was reproduced to the utmost precision attainable using the NOAA geophysical database for Virginia Beach, NOAA nautical charts for Hampton Roads and Norfolk harbor, and echo sounding data for the navigation channel and waterfront facilities. A parametric study consists of 112 simulation cases with various combinations of ship lanes, ship speeds, ship heading (inbound or outbound), channel depths, drift angles, and passing ship coupling (in head-on or overtaking encounters) were carried out for two waterfront facilities at NAVSTA Norfolk and Craney Island Fuel Terminal. The present paper provides detailed parametric study results at both locations to investigate the site-specific passing ship effects on the motion responses of ships moored at nearby piers.
Postmortem Proteolysis of Breast and Leg Muscles from Taiwan Colored Chickens and Silkie Bantams
Tsai, Shih-Fen,Lin, Chia-Ying,Lu, Jin-Jenn,Chou, Rong-Ghi R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.5
Postmortem proteolysis of breast (BM) and leg (LM) muscles from Taiwan colored chickens (TCC) and silkie bantams (SB) at $5^{\circ}C$ were compared. Myofibrils were prepared from BM and LM samples that were randomly taken from the carcasses of SB and TCC after 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14 days of storage at $5^{\circ}C$. pH of samples was determined, and degradation of myofibrillar proteins was analyzed by the SDS-PAGE and western blots. The results showed that pH was lower in BM than in LM samples from both avian strains. Appearance of 30 kDa components and disappearance of titin and nebulin were more rapidly as seen on SDS-PAGE in BM than in LM samples. Western blots labeled with a monoclonal antibody to desmin also demonstrated that desmin degraded more quickly in BM samples. Our data might suggest that postmortem proteolysis occurred more rapidly in BM than in LM from both TCC and SB.
Application of wavelet transform for the impulse response of pile
Sheng-Huoo Ni,Yu-Zhang Yanga,Chia-Rong Lyu 국제구조공학회 2017 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.19 No.5
The purpose of this paper is to study the capabilities of the impulse response method in length and flaw detecting for concrete piles and provide a suggested method to find small-size flaws in piles. In this work, wavelet transform is used to decompose the recorded time domain signal into a series of levels. These levels are narrowband, so the mix of different dominant bandwidths can be avoided. In this study, the impulse response method is used to analyze the signal obtained from the wavelet transform to improve the judgment of the flaw signal so as to detect the flaw location. This study provides a new way of thinking in non-destructive testing detection. The results show that the length of a pile is easy to be detected in the traditional reflection time or frequency domain method. However, the small flaws within pile are difficult to be found using these methods. The proposed approach in this paper is able to greatly improve the results of small-size flaw detection within piles by reducing the effects of any noise and clarifying the signal in the frequency domains.
