        Fabrication of Multifunctional Polyester Fabrics by Using Fluorinated Polymer Coatings

        Facile and effective polymer coatings are highly desirable in the creation of functional surfaces for variousapplications. A polymer coating by using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) and a fluorinatedalkyl silane (FAS-17) in volatile solvent has been proposed in the literature for the fabrication of chemically stable andsuperamphiphobic fabrics. This method, however, suffered from the fact that the results were unable to be experimentallyreproduced by the authors. In this work, FAS-17-modified PVDF-HFP with surface energy of 14.04 mN/m was preparedthrough two-step reactions in acetone using coupling agent 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (H2N-(CH2)3-Si-(OCH3)3) and1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17, F3C-(CF2)7-(CH2)2-Si-(OC2H5)3) in the first and second reaction steps,respectively. This coating solution was then applied onto the twill weave polyester fabric using a dip-coating method. The asfabricatedsurfaces exhibited extreme liquid repellency as signified by high static contact angles (149.5 o-105.7 o) against sixpure liquids (water, ethylene glycol, hexadecane, pentadecane, nonane, octane) with surface tension values ranging from 72.8to 21.4 mN/m. Furthermore, this coating showed chemical stability to strong acid (96 % sulfuric acid) and strong base (38 %sodium hydroxide). In addition to self-cleaning property, the coating also exhibited self-healing property as revealed by thestatic contact angle change with the plasma-and-heat treatment cycles. Moreover, it is interesting to note that coating offabrics with the pristine solution of PVDF-HFP and FAS-17 may instead find its potential applications in oil-waterseparation. High separation efficiency, stability, and reusability were exhibited by the as-fabricated separation membrane.

        Web Advertising Opportunities on Professional Sport Team Web Sites

        In the early 1990s, the World Wide Web (WWW) was mainly used for informational purposes. As more people search the web for information or add new materials, advertisers are finding the web to be a viable advertising opportunity for their products and services. This current trend also reflects on the area of sport management. Similar to sponsorship of sporting events and the endorsement of professional players, professional sport team web sites also attract attention from sponsors and corporations. The major purpose of this research was to explore the web advertising opportunities on professional sport team web sites. The subjects of this research were the professional sport team web sites. Content analysis was primarily used as the research method for this study. The findings showed that only a few professional sport teams present sponsorship and advertising opportunities on their web pages, even though almost every professional team has advertising banners on their homepages. The use of advertising banners on professional sport team web sites reflects the current developing stage of web advertising campaigns. The use of an advertising banner has been increasing; however, there is still no formal format for the advertising campaign. The authors also found that a large portion of professional sport teams contracted sport media companies to deal with the web advertising campaign, which might be a trend for sport management in the future. It is recommended that sport marketers provide the informational about the demographics because it is valuable informational to the potential sponsors who would like to know if the viewers match the characteristics of their target market.

      • Composite aircraft debonding visualization by laser ultrasonic scanning excitation and integrated piezoelectric sensing

        <P><B>SUMMARY</B></P><P>Two aircraft wings made of carbon fiber‐reinforced plastic material were inspected using the laser‐based ultrasonic propagation imaging system for the visualization of manufacturing defect and damages of debonding mode. Hypotheses of the detection mechanism of composite debonding were presented and validated through the inspection results for the bonding lines of the composite wing structures. The inspection showed that the location, shape, and size of the poor bonding defect, artificial stringer tip debonding, and real skin–spar debonding can be visualized and/or measured from the imaging results. The performance of the imaging system was found better than that of a manual ultrasonic C‐scan in terms of spatial resolution and damage detectability. Another finding from the inspection was the occurrence of skin buckling between two riveted locations. Most importantly, the presence of structural elements or features such as spars, stringers, ribs, lugs, inspection windows, and even embedded PZT elements did not adversely affect the inspection.         Sequence and phylogenetic analysis of the gp200 protein of Ehrlichia canis from dogs in Taiwan

        Ehrlichia (E.) canis is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium responsible for canine monocytic ehrlichiosis. Currently, the genetic diversity of E. canis strains worldwide is poorly defined. In the present study, sequence analysis of the nearly full-length 16S rDNA (1,620 bp) and the complete coding region (4,269 bp) of the gp200 gene, which encodes the largest major immunoreactive protein in E. canis, from 17 Taiwanese samples was conducted. The resultant 16S rDNA sequences were found to be identical to each other and have very high homology (99.4~100%) with previously reported E. canis sequences. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis of gp200 demonstrated that the E. canis Taiwanese genotype was genetically distinct from other reported isolates obtained from the United States, Brazil, and Israel, and that it formed a separate clade. Remarkable variations unique to the Taiwanese genotype were found throughout the deduced amino acid sequence of gp200, including 15 substitutions occurring in two of five known species-specific epitopes. The gp200 amino acid sequences of the Taiwanese genotype bore 94.4~94.6 identities with those of the isolates from the United States and Brazil, and 93.7% homology with that of the Israeli isolate. Taken together, these results suggest that the Taiwanese genotype represents a novel strain of E. canis that has not yet been characterized.

        Male Infertility Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan

        Purpose: Some evidence suggests that male infertility increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the evidence in Asian populations is relatively scarce. The aim of this study is to determine whether male infertility increases the risk of CVDs. Materials and Methods: We used inpatient and outpatient data for the years 2000 to 2015 from the Taiwanese Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. We enrolled 7,016 males over 18 years old and diagnosed with male infertility. Of these, 2,326 matched our inclusion criteria and were assigned to the study group. For each infertility patient, four comparison patients were frequency-matched by age and index date to form a control cohort comprising 9,304 patients. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate the association between male infertility and CVDs. Results: After a 15-year follow-up, the incidence rate of CVDs was higher in the infertility group than the control group (1,460.23 and 1,073.70 per 100,000 person-years, respectively). The Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that the adjusted HR for CVDs was 1.472 for the infertility group (95% CI, 1.288–1.683; p<0.001) relative to the control group. The Kaplan–Meier analysis of the cumulative incidence of CVDs in the two groups showed that the cumulative risk curve for CVDs was significantly higher for the infertility group than the control group. Conclusions: This study shows that men with infertility have a higher risk of developing incident CVDs. In the future, healthcare providers should pay attention to these patients because of their higher health risks.

        Delay of Surgery for Spinal Metastasis due to the COVID-19 Outbreak Affected Patient Outcomes

        Objective: The present study is to analyze the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 2019) outbreak and the subsequent lockdown on the outcomes of spinal metastasis patients. Methods: The study was a retrospective analysis of data from a prospective cohort study. All patients underwent surgical intervention for spinal metastases between January 2019 and December 2021 and had at least 3 months of postoperative follow-up. The primary outcome was overall mortality during the 4 different stages (pre-COVID-19 era, COVID-19 pandemic except in Taiwan, national lockdown, lifting of the lockdown). The secondary outcomes were the oncological severity scores, medical/surgical accessibility, and patient functional outcome during the 4 periods as well as survival/mortality. Results: A total of 233 patients were included. The overall mortality rate was 41.20%. During the Taiwan lockdown, more patients received palliative surgery than other surgical methods, and no total en bloc spondylectomy was performed. The time from surgeon visit to operation was approximately doubled after the COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan (75.97, 86.63, 168.79, and 166.91 hours in the 4 periods, respectively). The estimated survival probability was highest after the national lockdown was lifted and lowest during the lockdown. In the multivariate analysis, increased risk of mortality was observed with delay of surgery, with emergency surgery having a higher risk with delays above 33 hours, urgent surgery (below 59 and above 111 hours), and elective surgery (above 332 hours). Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic and related policies have altered daily clinical practice and negatively impacted the survival of patients with spinal metastases.

        Different Perceptions of Teaching Evaluations among Administrators, Faculty, and Students

        Effective teaching evaluation is important to all institutions of higher education in order to enhance and provide quality teaching for the students. Therefore, this study was intended to make a contribution to faculty evaluation systems in Physical Education departments in higher education. The study attempted to investigate the criteria used for teaching evaluation according to administrators`, faculty members`, and students` perceptions whenever the criteria were used for institutions` policies, for an annual review, or for tenure and promotion. Items studied included the degree of importance given to the criteria which were used in the evaluation of teaching. 125 Physical Education departments in U.S. colleges/universities were selected from the 504 eligible institutions by using a systematic sampling technique. In each college/university, thirteen persons, one department chairperson, two faculty members, and ten students, were asked to participate in the study. Data for this study were collected by using questionnaires. The findings show that the PE departments emphasized heavily the importance of the teaching function.

        This paper deals with the problem of the global stabilization for a class of tension leg platform (TLP) nonlinear control systems. Problem and objective: Based on the relaxed method, the chaotic system can be stabilized by regulating appropriately the parameters of dither. Scope and method: If the frequency of dither is high enough, the trajectory of the closed-loop dithered chaotic system and that of its corresponding model-the closed-loop fuzzy relaxed system can be made as close as desired. Results and conclusion: The behavior of the closed-loop dithered chaotic system can be rigorously predicted by establishing that of the closed-loop fuzzy relaxed system.

        Development of Ultrasonic Wave Propagation Imaging System

        Laser-based ultrasonic sensing requires the probe with fixed fecal length, but this requirement is not essential in laser-based ultrasonic generation. Based on this fact, we designed a pulsed laser-based ultrasonic wave propagation imaging (UWPI) system with a tilting mirror system for rapid scanning of target, and an in-line band-pass filtering capable of ultrasoaic mode selection. 1D-temporal averaging, 2D-spatial averaging, and 3D-data structure building algorithms were developed far clearer results allowing fur higher damage detectability. The imaging results on a flat stainless steel plate were presented in movie and snapshot formats which showed the propagation of ultrasound visible as a concentric wavefield emerging from the location of an ultrasonic sensor. A hole in the plate with a diameter of 1 mm was indicated by the scattering wavefields. The results showed that this robust UWPI system is independent of focal length and reference data requirements.
