Toward Justice in History: Achievements and Challenges on the Seventieth Anniversary of Jeju 4.3
Chansik Park 건국대학교 인문학연구원 2018 통일인문학 Vol.4 No.2
This year, as Jeju 4.3 met its seventieth anniversary, a wide array of events and activities are designed to inform the general public of Jeju 4.3 on a national scale, finally transforming Jeju 4.3 into a historical narrative that must be remembered by all Korean people. Furthermore, empathy for amendments of the Special Act aimed at a just settlement and healing including damage compensation spread, and the US responsibilities for the massacres of Jeju residents entered the sphere of public opinion. Along with such advances, various attempts to liberate the 4.3 discourse were forwarded, in the form of re-situating the Jeju residents at the time of 4.3 from victims to sovereign subjects in their community as well as in history. Now, the movement for truth and justice of 4.3 must move forward, with the seventieth anniversary as its foundation, by meeting the following challenges: search for specific methods for just settlement and healing; continuation of the success of nationalization; establishment and propulsion of mid-to-long-term plans for addressing US responsibilities; establishment of a system and activities that will continue the 4.3 movement through the coming generations; and locating the relevance of the spirit of 4.3 vis-à-vis liaison between this spirit and key issues at the current historical juncture.

Background/Aims: The goal of this study was to estimate the growth rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and identify the host factors that significantly affect this rate. Methods: Patients with early-stage HCC (n=175) who underwent two or more serial dynamic imaging studies without any anticancer treatment at two tertiary care hospitals in Korea were identified. For each patient, the tumor volume doubling time (TVDT) of HCC was calculated by comparing tumor volumes between serial imaging studies. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained from the medical records of the patients. Results: The median TVDT was 85.7 days, with a range of 11 to 851.2 days. Multiple linear regression revealed that the initial tumor diameter (a tumor factor) and the etiology of chronic liver disease (a host factor) were significantly associated with the TVDT. The TVDT was shorter when the initial tumor diameter was smaller, and was shorter in HCC related to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection than in HCC related to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection (median, 76.8 days vs. 137.2 days; P=0.0234). Conclusions: The etiology of chronic liver disease is a host factor that may significantly affect the growth rate of earlystage HCC, since HBV-associated HCC grows faster than HCV-associated HCC. The residual amount of fumigant was measured over time after fumigation on pine wilt disease infected Pinus koraiensislogs in the forests of Yeoncheon and Pocheon. Dimethyldisulfide (DMDS, 99.6%) was treated in large scale fumigation(100m3) in Yeoncheon and measured after removing tarpaulin cover in the 2 weeks of fumigation. DMDS was detectedat the highest concentration of 77.9 mg/kg in the 2nd week of treatment and decreased to 0.6 mg/kg in the 24th week.Metam-sodium (25%) was treated in small scale fumigation (1m3) in Pocheon and the amount of methylisothiocyanate(MITC) was measured after removing tarpaulin cover at each time of investigation. MITC was detected at the highestconcentration of 72.0 mg/kg in the 2nd week of treatment and then decreased to 7.0 mg/kg in the 24th week. However, unlike DMDS, MITC in the 12th week was detected at high concentration similar to the 1st week, indicating that thecontinuity of the sealing with tarpaulin would have a decisive influence on the residual amount change in fumigated logs.

Sclerodermus harmandi populations were collected from 6 Korean regions (Seoul, Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gyeonasang and Jeju provinces), 1 Chinese region (Nanjing) and 1 Japanese region (Tokyo). Above all was identified as the same species based on morphological characteristics. In present study, we compared the intra-specific characteristics of regional isolated populations of S. harmandi based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences of variant genomic and mitochondrial loci: the full length of internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 (ITS1 & ITS2), the complete cytochrome oxidase subunit I and II (COI & COII) and tRNA genes for aspartate and lysine and 5'end of ATPase 8 genes. There were no significant differences among the analysed 9 populations regardless of regional segregation. The nucleotide and translated amino acid sequences similarities were significantly high, despite some sequence differences were found in same loci. This result support the report based on the morphological characteristics. However, we are conducting further study to identify whether sequence differences in specific loci are the characteristics of individual level in population or population level and to analyse the full sequences of mitochondrial DNA by regional segregation.

To find a location, GPS has been wildly used. But, it is hard to use in indoor because of very weak signal level. To meet indoor requirements, there have been many studies applying wireless communication networks such as WLAN, UWB and ZigBee. Among these, ZigBee is widely adopted in many WSN applications because it has an advantage of low-power and low-cost. In ZigBee, the RSSI is used as range measurement for ad-hoc network. The RSSI are converted to ranges using the signal attenuation model and these ranges become inputs of positioning methods. The obtained position with RSSI has large error because of its poor accuracy. To overcome this problem, ultrasonic sensors are added in many researches. By measuring the arrival time difference of ZigBee and ultrasound as a range measurement, the precise position can be found. However, there are still many problems: scheduling of beacons to transmit signals in a correct order, addition and synchronization of beacons and low-rate positioning rate. At this paper, an efficient method to solve these problems is proposed. In the proposed method, a node transmits ZigBee and ultrasound signal simultaneously. And beacons find the range with the received signals and send it back to a node with ZigBee. The position is computed in a node with the received ranges. In addition, a new positioning algorithm to solve the risk of the divergence in the linearization method and the singularity problem in the Savarese method is presented. Both static and dynamic experimental results show 0.02m RMS errors with high output rate.

Aims: Guidelines recommend biannual ultrasonography (US) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance in at-risk patients. However, there has been concern about the suboptimal performance of US. Our aim was to compare the performance of unenhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and US in the surveillance for HCC. Methods: For this prospective, non-blinded, balanced-randomized study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02514434), we have been recruiting patients with liver cirrhosis from a tertiary hospital in Korea. Patients were randomly assigned to biannual unenhanced MRI or US, with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) testing, for HCC surveillance. Our primary endpoint was detection rate of early-stage HCC and false positive rate. Based on an expected HCC incidence of 3% per year, we calculated that we would need to observe 412 patients for 10 rounds of surveillance to detect a significant difference. Results: We performed a preliminary analysis of 241 patients who have received 1 to 4 examinations between May 2015 and March 2017. HCC incidence rate was 3.8% per year. In 121 patients in the MRI group (215 examinations), 5 (4.1%) HCCs were detected at very early (n = 3) or early (n = 2) stage, with 1 (0.8%) false positive case. In 120 patients in the US group (211 examinations), 1 (0.8%) HCC was detected at very early stage, with 4 (3.3%) false positive cases. There was one false negative case in each group; in the MRI group, an interval HCC was diagnosed at very early stage at an unscheduled imaging study performed for elevated AFP; in the US group, advanced HCC with vascular invasion was diagnosed at an unscheduled visit for abdominal pain, after negative surveillance examinations. Conclusions: The preliminary results demonstrate that unenhanced MRI may be a promising tool for HCC surveillance.
