Development and Quantitative Performance Evaluation of a Noninvasive EMG Computer Interface
Choi, Changmok,Micera, Silvestro,Carpaneto, Jacopo,Kim $^{ ast}$, Jung IEEE 2009 IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering Vol.56 No.1
<P>This paper describes a noninvasive electromyography (EMG) signal-based computer interface and a performance evaluation method based on Fittspsila law. The EMG signals induced by volitional wrist movements were acquired from four sites in the lower arm to extract userspsila intentions, and six classes of wrist movements were distinguished using an artificial neural network. Using the developed interface, a user can move the cursor, click buttons, and type text on a computer. The test setup was built to evaluate the developed interface, and the mouse was tested by five volunteers with intact limbs. The performance of the developed computer interface and the mouse was tested at 1.299 and 7.733 b/s, respectively, and these results were compared with the performance of a commercial noninvasive brain signal interface (0.386 b/s). The results show that the developed interface performed better than the commercial interface, but less satisfactorily than a computer mouse. Although some issues remain to be resolved, the developed EMG interface has the potential to help people with motor disabilities to access computers and Internet environments in a natural and intuitive manner.</P>

The objective of this study was to estimate the proper amount of subsidy required to operating dental hospital or clinic for the disabled. Models for estimating operating profit of general dental hospital/clinic and opportunity cost of operating dental hospital/clinic for the disabled was formulated. Data were collected from various sources such as the annual reports of Purme Hospital, one of the running dental hospitals for the disabled, statistics from Healthcare Bigdata Hub, operated by Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service of Korean Government, and the deliberation data of non-reimbursable treatments in Seoul Dental Hospital for the Disabled. A dental hospital/clinic for the disabled was less profitable than a general dental hospital/clinic, of which the reason is that the chair time for the average patient is longer. However, It was false that a dental hospital/clinic for the disabled scored less average insurance fee for a treatment. Disabled patients had more frequent prosthodontic treatments, which had a high average insurance fee. There were some groups of treatments that could yield higher profitability in a dental hospital/clinic for the disabled; recall checks, and periodontal treatments.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The study of InP etching kinetics as well as the evaluation of InP etching mechanism in HBr + Cl2 + Ar inductively coupled plasma were carried out. Experiments on the measurements of the etching rates for InP, SiO2, and SiNx as well as plasma diagnostics using Langmuir probes and optical emission spectroscopy were conducted at a fixed total gas pressure (10 mTorr, or 1.33 Pa), input power (800 W), and bias power (200 W), and the variable parameter was the HBr/Cl2 mixing ratio. Zero-dimensional (global) plasma modeling provided data regarding the densities of the plasma active species as well as on the particle and energy fluxes to the etched surface. An increase in the Cl2 fraction in the feed gas yielded a non-monotonic InP etching rate with a maximum of ~120 nm/min at 35% Cl2. Model-based analysis of the InP etching kinetics revealed that 1) the InP etching process is mainly provided by the chemical etching pathway; 2) the non-monotonic change in the InP etching rate cannot be explained by the chemical effects of Br and Cl atoms; and 3) the HCl molecules may have sufficiently contributed to the chemical etching pathway.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Etching mechanisms of Indium Phosphide in HBr/Cl2/Ar plasma were investigated. </LI> <LI> Non-monotonic etching rate cannot be explained by the effects from Br and Cl atoms. </LI> <LI> The sufficient influence to the chemical etching pathway may belong to HCl molecules. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>BACKGROUND: Medical simulators with vision and haptic feedback have been applied to many medical procedures in recent years, due to their safe and repetitive nature for training. Among the many technical components of the simulators, realistic and interactive organ modelling stands out as a key issue for judging the fidelity of the simulation. This paper describes the modelling of an oesophagus for a real-time laparoscopic surgical simulator. METHODS: For realistic simulation, organ deformation and tissue cutting in the oesophagus are implemented with geometric organ models segmented from the Visible Human Dataset. The tissue mechanical parameters were obtained from in vivo animal experiments and integrated with graphic and haptic devices into the laparoscopic surgical simulation system inside an abdominal mannequin. RESULTS: This platform can be used to demonstrate deformation and incision of the oesophagus by surgical instruments, where the user can haptically interact with the virtual soft tissues and simultaneously see the corresponding organ deformation on the visual display. CONCLUSIONS: Current laparoscopic surgical training has been transformed from the traditional apprenticeship model to simulation-based methods. The outcome of the model could replace conventional training systems and could be useful in effectively transferring surgical skills to novice surgeons.</P>

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data on an effective sport instructor system through analyzing the current status and teachers’ and students’ understanding of the sport instructor cooperative instruction. One hundred fifty three teachers and one hundred forty eight students in B metropolis, which are currently running the sport instructor system, took part in the survey and the following results were obtained: The sport instructor should be assist the teacher and help them improve sports skills for the low level students during the P.E lessons. Also, the sport instructor should encourage student participation and explain curriculum simply to the P.E class. Above all, the sport instructor should consult consultative with the teacher and hold deliberations on P.E teaching methods for the Consolidation of Elementary School Physical Education. The sport instructor system is an efficient system for P.E in elementary schools. A clear guideline and management policy should be implemented to continue sport instructor system for smooth operation and ongoing improvement.
