Influence of Glenosphere Design on Outcomes and Complications of Reverse Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review

        Cassandra Lawrence,Gerald R. Williams,Surena Namdari 대한정형외과학회 2016 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.8 No.3

Background: Different implant designs are utilized in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the results of reverse shoulder arthroplasty using a traditional (Grammont) prosthesis and a lateralized prosthesis for the treatment of cuff tear arthropathy and massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed via a search of two electronic databases. Two reviewers evaluated the quality of methodology and retrieved data from each included study. In cases where the outcomes data were similar between studies, the data were pooled using frequency-weighted mean values to generate summary outcomes. Results: Thirteen studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Demographics were similar between treatment groups. The frequency-weighted mean active external rotation was 24° in the traditional group and 46° in the lateralized group (p = 0.0001). Scapular notching was noted in 44.9% of patients in the traditional group compared to 5.4% of patients in the lateralized group (p = 0.0001). The rate of clinically significant glenoid loosening was 1.8% in the traditional group and 8.8% in the lateralized group (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Both the traditional Grammont and the lateralized offset reverse arthroplasty designs can improve pain and function in patients with diagnoses of cuff tear arthropathy and irreparable rotator cuff tear. While a lateralized design can result in increased active external rotation and decreased rates of scapular notching, there may be a higher rate of glenoid baseplate loosening.

Migrating up the World City Hierarchy: Seoul as a World City of ‘Transfer’ for the Latin American Creative Class

2022 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.6 No.3

This paper focuses on the world city of Seoul as an alternative, temporary destination for creative class migrants from Latin America. The creative class is a concept developed by Richard Florida to describe, "creative individuals whose economic function is to create new ideas, technology and/or creative content." In this research, world city of ‘transfer’ refers to world cities ranked by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) that are of high middle (Alpha) to lower ranking and that become ‘temporary stops’ for the migrating creative classes, whose ultimate destinations are the Alpha+ and Alpha++ world cities. This research namely asks: (1) From the perspective of creative migrants from developing countries, what causes them to leave world ‘transfer’ cities, such as Seoul, and not settle there long term? and (2) What kind of policies can be applied to help creative migrants stay in these cities permanently? Social integration policies should be implemented when trying to further develop a world city’s quality of place. Qualitative research methods such as in-depth interviews with Latin American creative people were employed to demonstrate Seoul’s need for social integration policies aimed at retaining global talent and not just attracting it.

Understanding the Mechanistic Link between Bisphenol A and Cancer Stem Cells: A Cancer Prevention Perspective

2021 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.26 No.1

Endocrine disruptors, such as bisphenol A (BPA), have become more frequently present in the environment as contaminants, especially in industrialized countries. Long-term effects of these environmental contaminants in humans are elusive. With their structural similarity to estrogen, many environmental contaminants including BPA, have been shown to mimic the biological functions of estrogen, potentially contributing to the development of breast cancer. It has been well established that BPA exerts estrogenic activity in animal models and in vitro systems. There is a concern for adverse effects from the exposure to BPA in regard to developmental and reproductive toxicities. However, the mechanisms by which BPA promotes breast cancer development remain unknown. Understanding the role of endocrine disruptors and their key mechanisms of action is important for public health, especially by providing a foundation for a better intervention approach in cancer prevention.

Vol.21 No.2

This paper looks at how the rising popularity of South Korean popular culture in foreign countries, known as Hallyu, influenced a reterritorialization of Mexico City’s Koreatown, ‘Little Seoul.’ In this study, reterritorialization is known as process of the possession of space by a new social group. Since its initial development in Mexico City during the mid-1990s, Little Seoul was traditionally described by the Mexican locals as a relatively closed society. However, with Hallyu’s increasing popularity among Mexican youths, the neighborhood has slowly started welcoming non-Korean consumers. Three types of actors are considered in this research: Korean residents and small business owners of Little Seoul; Mexican consumers; and social media. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate, through qualitative methods, how popular culture creates an opportunity for the reterritorialization process of an ethnic enclave to not only change its physical boundaries, but also allows it to expand towards other dimensions, such as cyberspace. Although the present study serves as but an introduction to a more detailed future research study, its results indicate the possibility of emerging arenas for future (re)territorialization processes to be carried out, such as places and spaces that transcend from the physical to the virtual dimensions.

        An Exploratory Study

Vol.30 No.2

This study explores the topics of human rights violations, persons with disabilities (pwds) and the criminal justice system of Trinidad and Tobago. The goal of this research is to discover whether human rights violations exist against pwds in the justice system and if so, how and why they may be violated. The various means by which these rights can be protected and enhanced is also critical to this research. This study encompasses three components of the justice system: the police, courts and prison systems as well as inculcated legislation as a key constituent. I adopted a qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews representing the main data collection medium accompanied by secondary sources. I found evidence that the human rights of pwds are possibly violated within the police, courts and legislative aspect of the system, with less clarity shed on the reality within the nation’s correctional facilities. I identified numerous multifaceted and interlocked themes which assisted in explaining how and why the rights of pwds may be violated in the justice system.Based upon these findings, I provide multiple suggestions for ways in which the rights of pwds can be enforced and protected within the individualized sectors as well as overall justice system. In terms of accessing and maneuvering within the criminal justice system of Trinidad and Tobago, pwds are increasingly marginalised and susceptible to conscious as well as unintentional human rights violations in a number of ways due to a multitude of reasons.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) is a mediator of lung toxicity for coal fly ash particulate material.

        Deering-Rice, Cassandra E,Johansen, Mark E,Roberts, Jessica K,Thomas, Karen C,Romero, Erin G,Lee, Jeewoo,Yost, Garold S,Veranth, John M,Reilly, Christopher A American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental 2012 Molecular pharmacology Vol.81 No.3

<P>Environmental particulate matter (PM) pollutants adversely affect human health, but the molecular basis is poorly understood. The ion channel transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) has been implicated as a sensor for environmental PM and a mediator of adverse events in the respiratory tract. The objectives of this study were to determine whether TRPV1 can distinguish chemically and physically unique PM that represents important sources of air pollution; to elucidate the molecular basis of TRPV1 activation by PM; and to ascertain the contributions of TRPV1 to human lung cell and mouse lung tissue responses exposed to an insoluble PM agonist, coal fly ash (CFA1). The major findings of this study are that TRPV1 is activated by some, but not all of the prototype PM materials evaluated, with rank-ordered responses of CFA1 > diesel exhaust PM > crystalline silica; TRP melastatin-8 is also robustly activated by CFA1, whereas other TRP channels expressed by airway sensory neurons and lung epithelial cells that may also be activated by CFA1, including TRPs ankyrin 1 (A1), canonical 4α (C4α), M2, V2, V3, and V4, were either slightly (TRPA1) or not activated by CFA1; activation of TRPV1 by CFA1 occurs via cell surface interactions between the solid components of CFA1 and specific amino acid residues of TRPV1 that are localized in the putative pore-loop region; and activation of TRPV1 by CFA1 is not exclusive in mouse lungs but represents a pathway by which CFA1 affects the expression of selected genes in lung epithelial cells and airway tissue.</P>

      • The Michelle Obama influence: an exploration of the first lady’s fashion, style, and impact on women

        Delisia Matthews,Cassandra Chaney,Jane A. Opiri 한국의류학회 2015 Fashion and Textiles Vol.2 No.1

Given keen national interest in the fashion sense of First Lady Michelle Obama, few studies have examined the appeal of the first lady’s style and if her example influences women to modify their styles and shopping behaviors. To address this paucity in the research, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of Michelle Obama’s apparel choices on women. To address this purpose, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who follow Michelle Obama’s fashion and rated her style as appealing. Qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed three themes: (1) relating through authenticity, (2) permission to defy norms, and (3) brands and the impression of endorsement. Findings reveal that Michelle Obama’s apparel choices make her relatable to everyday women. Participants noted that the first lady’s fashion choices gave them permission to challenge fashion norms for women, and adjust their personal styles. Lastly, several retail brands were thought of more positively by participants, given Michelle Obama’s implied endorsement.
