      • Consumer Preferences in Developing and Developed Country Markets and the Impact on EU and New Zealand

( Caroline Saunders ),( Meike Guenther ),( Peter Tait ),( John Saunders ),( Paul Dalziel ),( Paul Rutherford ) 한국EU학회 2015 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.13 No.2

Understanding international consumer preferences and attitudes towards food is important for countries like New Zealand that depend heavily on food exports. New Zealand’s export focus has changed over the last few decades from almost all exports going to Europe, to more into Asian markets, in particular to China. It is therefore important that different cultures and preferences in these markets are considered and understood. This paper will present results from a pilot survey in six countries (UK, Korea, Japan, India, China and Indonesia) focusing on how consumers in different markets respond to different attributes and on how New Zealand producers can communicate those using smart technology and digital media in overseas markets. The results highlight the importance of food safety and health foods in these markets. In general, developing countries valued attributes more than developed countries. This included environmental quality in food which was also seen as key for underpinning food safety. In addition, the study examined the potential impact of varying levels of premiums for food attributes on there turns to the agricultural sectors of the EU (European Union-28) and New Zealand using the partial equilibrium Lincoln Trade and Environment Model (LTEM). Trade model projections showed that the potential impact on the revenue for agriculture was important.

      • Tiger Mother as Ethnopreneur: Amy Chua and the Cultural Politics of Chineseness

Caroline S. Hau 서강대학교 동아연구소 2015 TRaNS(Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Sou Vol.3 No.2

Amy Chua catapulted to fame in the United States with the publication of her bestselling World on Fire: How Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability (2002) and a much-discussed Wall Street Journal excerpt from her next book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (2011). A wry account of a ‘Chinese’ mother’s efforts, not all successful, to raise her two daughters to be high-achievers, Tiger Mother created some controversy owing to its critique of ‘Western’-style parenting and its perceived advocacy of a ‘Tiger Mother’ brand of parenting that drew on the author’s own experience of being raised by Chinese-Filipino immigrant parents in America. Not only did Battle Hymn generate heated discussion in America about the stereotyping of Asian-Americans as ‘model minority’; it also tapped into American anxieties about the waning ofU.S. power in the wake of a rising China, while provoking spirited responses from mainland Chinese women looking to raise their children in ‘enlightened’ ways. This article follows Amy Chua’s career as an ‘ethnopreneur’ who capitalises on her claims of ‘Chineseness’ and access to ‘Chinese culture.’ Drawing on localised/provincialised, regional, and family-mediated notions of Chineseness, Chua exemplifies the ‘Anglo-Chinese’ who exploits – and profits from – national and cultural differences within nations as well as among Southeast Asia, the U.S., and China in order to promote particular forms of hybridised (trans)national identities while eschewing the idea ofmainland China as the ultimate cultural arbiter of Chineseness.

      • Virtualization-based Radio Access Network Evolution

        Caroline Chan,Udayan Mukherjee,Valerie Young,유탁기 에스케이텔레콤 (주) 2013 Telecommunications Review Vol.23 No.5

The recent researches on telecommunication area see the potential for network functions virtualization (NFV) to reduce both capital and operational expenditures (CapEx/OpEx), as well as speed up the time to market for new services. These benefits arise because NFV helps decouple network functions from hardware so they are no longer tied to proprietary hardware, running instead on high-volume, industry-standard server platforms. At the heart of NFV is virtualization technology, which until recently has posed significant challenges to realizing the real-time performance required to support telecom workloads. This paper describes some of the issues equipment developers face in a virtualized environment and explains how they can be overcome. In particular, there is an in-depth analysis showing how a virtualized base station running on a general purpose processor-based platform can meet the 4G network requirements for latency and performance. Some test results and the corresponding observations are described for real-time processing in virtualized environment. We also present the RAN evolution vision based on virtualization technology.

      • Effects of temperature on binding energy and the nonlinear optical properties of a hydrogenic donor in a GaAs/Ga0.8Al0.2As pillbox immersed in a Ga0.6Al0.4As material

Caroline Sugirtham, L.,John Peter, A.,Woo Lee, Chang Elsevier 2015 PHYSICA B-CONDENSED MATTER - Vol.457 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Effect of temperature on the hydrogenic donor binding energy is found in a GaAs/Ga0.8Al0.2As pillbox surrounded by Ga0.6Al0.4As for various lengths of the pillbox and the barrier thicknesses. Photoionization cross section as a function of normalized photon energy, for various values of temperatures, is computed. Some nonlinear optical properties as a function of photon energy are dealt for a fixed length of the pillbox. Optical rectification coefficients, second order and the third order harmonic generation coefficients are found as a function of photon energy for various values of temperatures. It is shown that the optical rectification and second order and the third order harmonic generation coefficients are quite sensitive to the effect of temperature. It is also observed that the electronic properties and the nonlinear optical properties have more influence on the temperature and the geometrical confinement. The results are in good agreement with the recent investigations.</P>

A mediastinal germ cell tumor mimicking an ectopic pregnancy

        Caroline Rivera,Marion Poingt,Francois Vandenbossche,Jacques Jougon 대한부인종양학회 2011 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.22 No.4

The objective is to report the case of a 36 year-old female with a primary mediastinal germ cell tumor mimicking an ectopic pregnancy. The patient under birth control pill presented, at seven weeks of amenorrhea, a β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) level of 850 UI and uterine vacuity with left lateral uterine heterogeneous mass but no bleeding and no pain. She received left adnexectomy, uterine curettage and further treatment by methotrexate because of persistent high β-hCG markers. Computed tomography scan finally permitted to discover a voluminous anterior mediastinal tumor. We may recommend investigating patients with a simple chest X-ray that present with persistent increased β-hCG despite efficient ectopic pregnancy treatment.

      • A Web-based Self-tuning Control System to Automate Materials Procurement in Large Construction Projects

        Caroline T.W. Chan,H.C. Sin 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

In this paper, a self-tuning control system is proposed to automate materials procurement for largeconstruction projects. The system is planned to be a web-based tool to facilitate the sharing of real time information related to stock level, work progress and material ordering. A prototype of the system was developed and tested by threeprocurement cases in a commercial development project producing encouraging results. The system successfully forecasted the material requirement by tuning the batch order to match with the actual required level.

Intake of Purple Grape Juice as a Hepatoprotective Agent in Wistar Rats

        Caroline Dani,Livia S. Oliboni,Matheus A.B. Pasquali,Marcos R. Oliveira,Fernanda M. Umezu,Mirian Salvador,Jose C.F. Moreira,Joao A.P. Henriques 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.1

Grape juice is a source of polyphenols, as catechin, anthocyanidins, resveratrol, and others. Some health benefits have been attributed to these compounds (e.g., antioxidant and antitumorigenic properties). In this study, we investigated the possible antioxidant activity of two different grape juices: organic purple grape juice and conventional purple grape juice. The antioxidant activity of both grape juices was evaluated by an animal model of three groups: control and organic and conventional juices. After 30 days, all animals were sacrificed, and blood and liver were collected to evaluate lipid peroxidation level (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances [TBARS] assay), protein oxidative level (carbonyl assay), and catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. The group treated with organic grape juice showed the highest SOD and CAT activities in both plasma and liver when compared with the conventional and control groups (P .05). In plasma, we observed a positive correlation among SOD and CAT activities, resveratrol, and all anthocyanin contents, suggesting that these polyphenols may be, at least in part, responsible for this increased antioxidant defense. The grape juices were capable of reducing carbonyl and lipid peroxidation levels in plasma and liver. However, in plasma, the organic group showed lower carbonyl and TBARS levels when compared to the conventional grape juice group (P .05). Our findings suggest that the intake of purple grape juice, especially of organic juice, induces a better antioxidant capacity when compared to conventional juice and that this may be an important issue for further investigations in the area of biochemical functional foods.

Opening the black box of metagovernance: The roles of central government in local multilevel networks – the case of the local job centers in Flanders

Caroline Temmerman,FILIP DE RYNCK,Joris Voets 한국행정학회 2015 International Review of Public Administration Vol.20 No.3

In this article, we use the concept of metagovernance to explore how local service delivery networks involving public and private partners are shaped and managed by different governments involved. We address the following questions: What is the governance mix in cases of centrally designed local networks, with different public authorities involved in the network and focused on coordinated service delivery? How does that governance mix match the concept of metagovernance as we know it? What does this complexity of relationships and governing styles tell us about the self-governing capacity of local service delivery networks? We bring in the case of the local job centers in Flanders to deal with these questions empirically. We demonstrate the governance instrument mix used by the metagovernors, how dominant one public actor actually is in the network, and the effect thereof on the network dynamics. We also conclude that we need to rethink the concept of metagovernance when analyzing local multilevel networks.

Group work as a strategy for attribution retraining in the Asian educational context of Singapore

Caroline Koh 서울대학교 교육연구소 2008 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.9 No.2

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of group work as a strategy for attribution retraining and improving students' motivational styles. Students were first categorised into one of three motivational styles: learned helplessness, self-worth motivation and mastery orientation. In the intervention procedure, selected students from each of these three categories were subjected to an intervention procedure requiring the students to work in groups, with the emphasis on personal effort as the major contributor to group success. Post-intervention assessment of motivation showed an improvement in the motivation of self-worth motivated students although there was generally a decrease in mastery orientation amongst students in both the control as well as the experimental groups.

      • Science, Technology and Innovation Policy in Times of COVID-19: International Perspectives

Caroline Paunov,Sandra Planes-Satorra 과학기술정책연구원 2020 기타연구 Vol.- No.-

As COVID-19 pandemic has become prevalent and threatened global health systems, the importance of urgency to find the solutions to these challenges has been continuously addressed and emphasized. Universities, scientists, and civil societies, accordingly, has made efforts to collaborate across many various disciplines. This shock resulting from the pandemic addresses and provides many challenges especially to science, technology and innovation (STI) ecosystem and the related platform. Under this background, this study explores the STI policy responses adopted across OECD countries from the start of the COVID-19 outbreak until September 2020, both to stimulate research and innovation to fight the pandemic, as well as to address the negative impacts of the crisis on STI actors. It also reflects on new policy trends that could shape the future of STI policy, and discusses a number of policy considerations of relevance for Korea. Based on the extensive analytical research on STI, this study suggests a number of immediate STI policy considerations which is relevant for the Korean context. We expect this study takes a role of the addition to recent issues on emerging STI policy trends that may shape longer-term policy directions in Korea as well as other countries. First, the need remains for policy to continue to support research and innovation to contribute solutions to the pandemic. Especially, Korea’s engagement in international collaborations to share lessons learned on managing the pandemic and supporting solutions is important. Second, STI actors may face important challenges depending on the future evolution of the pandemic and the impacts of measures implemented across the globe to contain them. The policy interests should shed light on the inclusiveness challenges that would be led by COVID-19 shocks threatening the socially disadvantaged. Third, the responsiveness and agility of the STI system to this and future crises needs particular attention. In this regard, important tasks include improving the tools and data integrating system to monitor the real-time impacts to revisiting strategies and STI governance models at national and global level. Those efforts will be necessary if STI in the post-crisis recovery is to promote the structural reforms needed for the transformation towards more sustainable, inclusive and resilient systems. The Korean New Deal goes in this direction by boosting investments in digital and green technologies. An assessment of the successes and failures of the Korean STI system in responding to the COVID-19 crisis can prove valuable for identifying where change is needed most.
