Association of Personality Traits and Risk of Internet Addiction in Adolescents

        Candan €Oztürk,Murat Bektas,Dijle Ayar,Beste €Ozgüven €Oztornacı,Dilek Ya gcı 한국간호과학회 2015 Asian Nursing Research Vol.9 No.2

Purpose: This cross-sectional, descriptive study analyzes the association between personality traits and internet addiction in adolescents. Methods: The study was conducted with 328 adolescents attending two high schools in the Aegean region of Turkey. The data were collected using a sociodemographic information questionnaire, the Internet Addiction Scale and the Adjective Based Personality Scale from students who gave their informed consent to participate. Data were assessed by descriptive statistics, t tests, and logistic regression analysis, using SPSS software. Results: The students had an average age of 16.43 ± 1.47 years and 40.5% were female. The percentage of subjects at risk of internet addiction was 15.9% (n = 52), and 42.4% (n = 22) of them reported that the amounts of time they spent online was acceptable. We found statistically significant differences in the average subdimensional scores for extraversion (t = 2.310, p < .050) and openness to experience (t = 3.35, p < .001), and between students at risk of internet addiction (n = 52) and those who were not (n = 276). Conclusions: Adolescents who were found to be at risk of internet addiction nevertheless reported on the survey questionnaires that the amount of time they spent online was acceptable. The study determined that participants' risk of internet addiction was associated with their levels of extraversion and openness to experience.

Improving locoregional outcome in high-intermediate-risk and high-risk stage I endometrial cancer with surgical staging followed by brachytherapy

        Candan Demiroz Abakay,Sonay Arslan,Meral Kurt,Sibel Cetintas 대한방사선종양학회 2022 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.40 No.2

Purpose: This study aims to assess the locoregional efficacy of postoperative vaginal brachytherapy (VBT) alone in patients undergoing surgical staging for early-stage high-intermediate-risk (HIR) and high-risk (HR) endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods: One hundred and four patients with early-stage HIR and HR endometrial cancer who underwent surgical staging were treated with adjuvant VBT alone. The patients with stage Ib, grade I-III, stage Ia, grade III, lower uterine segment involvement, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) were included to study. Results: The 5- and 10-year overall survival (OS) rates were 87% and 76%, respectively. The 5- and 10-year DFS rates were 86% and 86%, respectively. Among the patients, 92% had endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 2% had undifferentiated carcinoma, 2% had serous papillary carcinoma, and 4% had clear-cell carcinoma. Of the patients, 63% had stage Ib disease, while 37% had stage Ia disease. None of the patients had vaginal or pelvic lymph node recurrence, whereas two had para-aortic lymph node metastasis, one had surgical scar recurrence, one had para-aortic lymph node and brain metastasis, and one had lung metastasis. The presence of lymphatic invasion was found to be a statistically significant prognostic factor for increased distant metastasis rates (p = 0.020). Lymphatic invasion was also regarded as an independent prognostic factor for metastasis-free survival (p = 0.044). Conclusion: Our study results suggest that postoperative VBT alone is an effective and safe treatment modality with low complication in patients undergoing surgical staging for HIR and HR endometrial cancer.

      • Effects of Cigarette Smoking across Three Generations and of Perceptions of the Smoking-Cancer Relationship on the Cigarette Smoking Status of Turkish University Students

Ozturk, Candan,Bektas, Murat,Mert, Ozlem Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.11

Background: This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to investigate effects of cigarette smoking across three generations and perceptions of the smoking-cancer relationship on the cigarette smoking status of Turkish university students. Materials and Methods: The study sample comprised of 434 university students studying in different departments of a university. Data were collected using a socio-demographic data collection form and the Decisional Balance Scaleqand evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test, CHAID and multiple regression analyses. Results: The average age of the students participating in the study is 19.6+.5.0, some 11.3% of the students reporting that they smoked cigarettes. No statistically significant relationship was ascertained between the cigarette smoking statuses of the students based on the cigarette smoking status of their grandparents (p=0.144). but there was alink to that of their parents (p=0.002). The difference between the cigarette smoking ratios of the students based on their perceptions of smoking-cancer relationship was statistically significant (p<0.001). Believing that there is a relationship between smoking and cancer decreased likelihood of cigarette smoking 3.7 fold. Cigarette smoking by grandparents, and believing that there is a relationship between smoking and cancer, and cigarette smoking by parents explained 8.3% of the cigarette smoking status of the students. Conclusions: While cigarette smoking by grandparents only indirectly influences cigarette smoking by the students, believing that there is a relationship between smoking and cancer, and cigarette smoking by parents are influential variables in determining cigarette smoking by Turkish students.

The effect of CYP1A2 gene polymorphisms on Theophylline metabolism and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Turkish patients

        ( Ahmet Uslu ),( Candan Ogus ),( Tulay Ozdemir ),( Turker Bilgen ),( Ozgur Tosun ),( Ibrahim Keser ) 생화학분자생물학회 (구 한국생화학분자생물학회) 2010 BMB Reports Vol.43 No.8

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2 gene polymorphisms are thought to be involved in the metabolism of theophylline (TP). We aimed to investigate the effect of CYP1A2*1C, CYP1A2*1D, CYP1A2*1E, and CYP1A2*1F polymorphisms of the CYP1A2 on TP metabolism by PCR-RFLP in 100 Turkish patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) receiving TP. One hundred and one healthy volunteers were included as control group. The genotype frequencies of the CYP1A2*1D and CYP1A2*1F were found to be significantly different in the patients compared to the controls. The “T” allele at -2467 delT and the “C” allele at -163 C > A in the CYP1A2 displayed association with a significantly increased risk for COPD. “T” allele at -2467 delT was also associated with a high risk of disease severity in COPD. In conclusion, our data suggest that genetic alterations in CYP1A2 may play a role both in the pharmacogenetics of TP and in the development of COPD. [BMB reports 2010; 43(8): 530-534]

Results About forty-nine percent of the students (48.9%) was male, 51.1% of them was female and the average age was 11.6 ± 0.53 years. It was found that students who had high scores for being exposed to bullying were significantly more likely to experience headache, feeling bad, crying restlessness, nervousness, sleeping problems, dizziness; whereas students who had high bullying scores were significantly more likely to experience only poor appetite. Conclusions Students exposed to bullying have more health problems than the bullying students. It is recommended that programs designed to prevent the negative effects of bullying be developed.

      • Role of PET/CT in Treatment Planning for Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Definitive Radiotherapy

        Arslan, Sonay,Abakay, Candan Demiroz,Sen, Feyza,Altay, Ali,Akpinar, Tayyar,Ekinci, Ahmet Siyar,Esbah, Onur,Uslu, Nuri,Kekilli, Kezban Esra,Ozkan, Lutfi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

Background: In this study, we aimed to investigate the benefits of 18F-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FGD-PET/CT) imaging for staging and radiotherapy planning in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing definitive radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: Thirty-seven head and neck cancer patients who had undergone definitive radiotherapy and PET/CT at the Uludag University Medical Faculty Department of Radiation Oncology were investigated in order to determine the role of PET/CT in staging and radiotherapy planning. Results: The median age of this patient group of 32 males and 5 females was 57 years (13-84years). The stage remained the same in 18 cases, decreased in 5 cases and increased in 14 cases with PET/CT imaging. Total gross tumor volume (GTV) determined by CT (GTVCT-Total) was increased in 32 cases (86.5%) when compared to total GTV determined by PET/CT (GTVPET/CT-Total). The GTV of the primary tumor determined by PET/CT (GTVPET/CT) was larger in 3 cases and smaller in 34 cases compared to that determined by CT (GTVCT). The GTV of lymph nodes determined by PET/CT (GTVLNPET/CT) was larger in 20 cases (54%) and smaller in 12 cases (32.5%) when compared to GTV values determined by CT (GTVLNCT). No pathological lymph nodes were observed in the remaining five cases with both CT and PET/CT. Conclusions: We can conclude that PET/CT can significantly affect both pretreatment staging and assessed target tumor volume in patients with head and neck cancer. We therefore recommend examining such cases with PEC/CT before treatment.

Effect of Thermal Compression Treatment on the Surface Hardness, Vertical Density Propile and Thickness Swelling of Eucalyptus Wood Boards by Hot-pressing

        Oner Unsal,Zeki Candan,Umit Buyuksari,Suleyman Korkut,Yoon Seong Chang,Hwan Myeong Yeo 한국목재공학회 2011 목재공학 Vol.39 No.2

Thermal treatment techniques are used for modifying wood and wood-based materials to improve dimensional stability and hygroscopicity. This study investigated the effects of press pressure and temperature on density, vertical density profile, thickness swelling and surface hardness of eucalyptus wood boards. The experimental wood boards were prepared from Turkish River Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn.). The surface hardness value increased with increasing press pressure in the treated groups. The application of a higher pressure at the same temperature level increased the amount of swelling of wood. It means that it is not needed for application of higher pressure to enhance the dimensional stability of wood. It is expected that it is possible to produce increased hardness, dimensional stability and durability by application of hot pressing treatment. This research showed that different press pressure and temperature values should be used to improve the performance properties of eucalyptus wood so that the end-use of the wood materials could be expanded.
