Effect of Chickpea Aqueous Extracts, Organic Extracts, and Protein Concentrates on Cell Proliferation

        Julio Gir?-Calle,Javier Vioque,Maria del Mar Yust,Justo Pedroche,Manuel Alaiz,Francisco Millan 한국식품영양과학회 2004 Journal of medicinal food Vol.7 No.2

Pulses should be part of a healthy diet, and it is also becoming clear that they have health-promoting effects. Nevertheless, most studies on the bioactive or health-promoting properties of pulses have been carried out using soybeans. We have studied cell growth-regulating properties, which may be responsible for anti-cancer properties, in chickpea seeds. Chickpea seeds are a staple in the traditional diet of many Mediterranean, Asian, and South and Central American countries. In addition, chickpea seeds have industrial applications since they can be used for the preparation of protein concentrates and isolates. The cell lines Caco-2 (epithelial intestinal) and J774 (macrophages) have been exposed to chickpea seed extracts and protein preparations in order to screen the different chickpea fractions for effects on cell growth. Both cell growth-promoting and cell growth-inhibiting effects were found. Most interestingly, a fraction soluble in ethanol and acetone specifically and almost completely inhibited the growth of Caco-2 cells exhibiting a cancerous phenotype. It is concluded that chickpea seeds are a source of bioactive components and deserve further study for their possible anti-cancer effect.

      • Cross-Linked Thermally Rearranged Poly(benzoxazole-<i>co</i>-imide) Membranes Prepared from <i>ortho</i>-Hydroxycopolyimides Containing Pendant Carboxyl Groups and Gas Separation Properties

        Calle, Mariola,Jo, Hye Jin,Doherty, Cara M.,Hill, Anita J.,Lee, Young Moo American Chemical Society 2015 Macromolecules Vol.48 No.8

<P>The incorporation of small amounts of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) comonomer (usually 5–20 mol %) into an <I>ortho</I>-hydroxypolyimide (HPI) precursor constitutes a new methodology to easily improve the gas transport performance of thermally rearranged (TR) polymer membranes. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) profiles of HPI with DABA copolyimides (HPID) suggests that there is an overlap between the temperature ranges of two processes: the degradation of DABA carboxyl groups and the actual thermal rearrangement process. During thermal treatment at 450 °C, carboxyl pendant groups in DABA degrade while a more rigid biphenyl cross-linked structure is formed either following or at the same time as the rearrangement of imide to benzoxazole. Mixed-gas CO2/CH4 (1:1) experiments proved this new series of cross-linked TR poly(benzoxazole-<I>co</I>-imide) (XTR-PBOI) membranes as superior materials for CO2/CH4 separation applications, with enhanced permeability and selectivity, as well as high resistance to plasticization up to 40 bar.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2015/mamobx.2015.48.issue-8/acs.macromol.5b00298/production/images/medium/ma-2015-00298a_0006.gif'></P>

      • Cross-Linked Thermally Rearranged Poly(benzoxazole-<i>co</i>-imide) Membranes for Gas Separation

Calle, Mariola,Doherty, Cara M.,Hill, Anita J.,Lee, Young Moo American Chemical Society 2013 Macromolecules Vol.46 No.20

<P>A novel strategy to tune the cavity size and free volume of thermally rearranged polybenzoxazole (TR-PBO) copolymer membranes by transesterification cross-linking reaction of <I>o</I>-hydroxy polyimide precursors with 1,4-butylene glycol in the solid state is demonstrated in this study. During the thermal rearrangement (TR) process at high temperatures, loose diester interchain cross-linkers are prone to degrade while formation of a much more rigid cross-linked structure occurs following or alongside the imide-to-benzoxazole rearrangement. As a result, a synergistic effect of high permeability and high selectivity appeared to be created in one step, and the newly synthesized cross-linked TR-PBO membranes exhibited outstanding gas separation performance, surpassing the so-called 2008 upper bound for CO2/CH4 separation.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2013/mamobx.2013.46.issue-20/ma4014115/production/images/medium/ma-2013-014115_0012.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ma4014115'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

        Statistical analysis of metagenomics data

        Calle, M. Luz Korea Genome Organization 2019 Genomics & informatics Vol.17 No.1

Understanding the role of the microbiome in human health and how it can be modulated is becoming increasingly relevant for preventive medicine and for the medical management of chronic diseases. The development of high-throughput sequencing technologies has boosted microbiome research through the study of microbial genomes and allowing a more precise quantification of microbiome abundances and function. Microbiome data analysis is challenging because it involves high-dimensional structured multivariate sparse data and because of its compositional nature. In this review we outline some of the procedures that are most commonly used for microbiome analysis and that are implemented in R packages. We place particular emphasis on the compositional structure of microbiome data. We describe the principles of compositional data analysis and distinguish between standard methods and those that fit into compositional data analysis.

Effects of resistance training on the inflammatory response

Mariana C Calle,Maria Luz Fernandez 한국영양학회 2010 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.4 No.4

Resistance training (RT) is associated with reduced risk of low grade inflammation related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The majority of the data studying cytokines and exercise comes from endurance exercise. In contrast, evidence establishing a relationship between RT and inflammation is more limited. This review focuses on the cytokine responses both following an acute bout, and after chronic RT. In addition, the effect of RT on low grade systemic inflammation such as individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes is reviewed. Cytokines are secreted proteins that influence the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of immune cells and other organ systems. Cytokines function as intracellular signals and almost all cells in the body either secrete them or have cytokine receptors. Thus, understanding cytokine role in a specific physiological situation such as a bout of RT can be exceedingly complex. The overall effect of long term RT appears to ameliorate inflammation, but the specific effects on the inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor alpha are not clear, requiring further research. Furthermore, it is critical to differentiate between chronically and acute Interleukin-6 levels and its sources. The intensity of the RT and the characteristics of the training protocol may exert singular cytokine responses and as a result different adaptations to exercise. More research is needed in the area of RT in healthy populations, specifically sorting out gender and age RT acute responses. More importantly, studies are needed in obese individuals who are at high risk of developing low grade systemic inflammatory related diseases. Assuring adherence to the RT program is essential to get the benefits after overcoming the first acute RT responses. Hence RT could be an effective way to prevent, and delay low grade systemic inflammatory related diseases.

      • Foreign body granuloma reaction after endovascular therapy of an unruptured right frontal arteriovenous malformation

        Jaime Lopez-Calle,Roberto Colasanti,Cesar Chian,Joham Choque-Velasquez 대한뇌혈관외과학회 2020 Journal of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neuros Vol.22 No.4

Foreign body reactions after endovascular procedures for brain arteriovenous malformations are extremely rare. We report the case of a cerebral foreign body granuloma reaction after embolization of a frontal arteriovenous malformation with Onyx. A previously treated 36-year-old man underwent re-embolization of a residual and recurrent unruptured right frontal vascular malformation with Onyx. The post-procedural imaging revealed a right frontotemporal heterogeneously enhancing expansive lesion associated with a residual malformation. Following microsurgical resection, the histopathological examination of the expansive lesion revealed basophilic foreign body like deposits adjacent to multi-nucleated giant cells, highly compatible with cerebral foreign body granulomas reaction to Onyx. The clinical and radiological follow-up of the patient was favorable after complete resection of the lesions.

An Enhanced Dynamic Multilayer Routing for Networks with Protection Requirements

Urra, Anna,Calle, Eusebi,Marzo, Jose L.,Vila, Pere The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2007 Journal of communications and networks Vol.9 No.4

This paper presents a new enhanced dynamic and multilayer protection(DMP) routing scheme that considers cooperation between packet and wavelength switching domain in order to minimize the resource consumption. The paper describes the architecture of the multilayer network scenario and compares the proposed algorithm with other routing mechanisms applying protection at the IP/multi-protocol label switching(MPLS) layer or at the optical layer. Simulation results show that DMP reduces the number of optical-electrical-optical(o-e-o) operations and makes an efficient use of the network resources compared to non-multilayer proposals.
