Genome and chromosome wide association studies for growth traits in Simmental and Simbrah cattle

        Calderón-Chagoya René,Vega-Murillo Vicente Eliezer,García-Ruiz Adriana,Ríos-Utrera Ángel,Martínez-Velázquez Guillermo,Montaño-Bermúdez Moisés 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.1

Objective: The objective of this study was to perform genome (genome wide association studies [GWAS]) and chromosome (CWAS) wide association analyses to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with growth traits in registered Simmental and Simbrah cattle. Methods: The phenotypes were deregressed BLUP EBVs for birth weight, weaning weight direct, weaning weight maternal, and yearling weight. The genotyping was performed with the GGP Bovine 150k chip. After the quality control analysis, 105,129 autosomal SNP from 967 animals (473 Simmental and 494 Simbrah) were used to carry out genotype association tests. The two association analyses were performed per breed and using combined information of the two breeds. The SNP associated with growth traits were mapped to their corresponding genes at 100 kb on either side. Results: A difference in magnitude of posterior probabilities was found across breeds between genome and chromosome wide association analyses. A total of 110, 143, and 302 SNP were associated with GWAS and CWAS for growth traits in the Simmental-, Simbrahand joint -data analyses, respectively. It stands out from the enrichment analysis of the pathways for RNA polymerase (POLR2G, POLR3E) and GABAergic synapse (GABRR1, GABRR3) for Simmental cattle and p53 signaling pathway (BID, SERPINB5) for Simbrah cattle. Conclusion: Only 6,265% of the markers associated with growth traits were found using CWAS and GWAS. The associated markers using the CWAS analysis, which were not associated using the GWAS, represents information that due to the model and priors was not associated with the traits.

Acute Effects of Turmeric Extracts on Knee Joint Pain: A Pilot, Randomized Controlled Trial

        Lorena Calderón-Pérez,Elisabet Llauradó,Judit Companys,Laura Pla-Pagà,Noemí Boqué,Francesc Puiggrós,Rosa-M Valls,Anna Pedret,Josep Manuel Llabrés,Lluís Arola,Rosa Solà 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.4

Turmeric extracts (TEs) have been shown to be suitable as a pain treatment for human joint arthritis. In a pilot, randomized clinical trial, 68 individuals with mild/moderate knee joint pain (KJP) consumed a new formulation of water-soluble TEs and insoluble curcuminoids (B-Turmactive®) or brewer's yeast as a placebo for 1 week. Our hypothesis was that B-Turmactive would have a short-term analgesic effect on KJP measured by the self-reported Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). After 3 days and 1 week, both treatments reduced pain when walking on a flat surface (P < .01), going up or down stairs (P < .001), and sitting or lying (P < .05), but only B-Turmactive reduced pain at night while in bed and in an upright standing position (P < .01). Concerning global KJP, it was reduced by both treatments after 3 days and 1 week of the intervention (P < .001), being less with B-Turmactive after 1 week (P = .012 vs. 3 weeks). Although no intertreatment differences were observed, only B-Turmactive decreased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (P = .045) at 1 week, which indicates a prompt analgesic effect mediated by a decrease in inflammatory status.

International Exhibitions as a Cultural Link: Conservation of Cultural Heritage

( Rosana Calderón Martin Del Campo ) 부경대학교 글로벌지역학연구소 2018 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.2 No.1

The cultural heritage of a nation is everything that affirms the values, ways of life, representations of the world, ideas, knowledge, customs, traditions and dreams of the social group that composes it. Cultural heritage, therefore, encompasses both materials and immaterial entity which includes all the possible visions to illustrate how human beings are linked to different customs, social status, educational levels, ethnic origins within a society. The preservation of cultural heritage is not only based on national and international legal provisions, but also on direct activities to prevent, stop, and, reverse the physical deterioration of archaeological, historical and artistic monuments. Moreover, its preservation only makes sense if it fulfills the function as a binding element of rootedness to the present and future generation. Mexico is a country of great cultural and ethnic diversity, so its cultural heritage is extremely broad and diverse. The conservation-restoration of cultural heritage in Mexico is an activity of great importance, which has required specialization in diverse efforts from the relevant fields. In this context, the Universal Exhibition can be a good example to discuss the current issues addressed here in this article. The purpose of the exhibition which is held every five years is to promote economic, touristic, and cultural significance of each participating country. Additionally, the exhibition includes multiple forums to discuss such as iconic objects of the pre-Hispanic cultures, vice regal period, and modern and contemporary art. This type of exhibition requires preventive conservation strategies to control environmental conditions around collections and to minimize any possible alteration during their exhibition period. It provides a great opportunity to share and compare experiences with professionals in this field regarding scientific and technical advances. Thus, the Universal Exhibition in Shanghai 2010 was mainly discussed in this article with regard to implementing preventive conservation strategies in detail.

An extension of the discrete Lindley distribution with applications

        E. Calderín-Ojeda,E. Gómez-Déniz 한국통계학회 2013 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.42 No.3

An extension of the discrete Lindley distribution is obtained by discretizing the continuous failure rate model in the generalized continuous distribution in Zakerzadeh and Dolati [Zakerzadeh, Y., & Dolati, A. (2009). Generalized Lindley distribution. Journal of Mathematical Extension, 3(2), 13–25]. The result is a generalization of the geometric distribution which presents high versatility since covariates can be included in the model.

Effect of Oseltamivir on Catecholamines and Select Oxidative Stress Markers in the Presence of Oligoelements in the Rat Brain

        David Calderón Guzmán,Ernestina Hernández García,Norma Osnaya Brizuela,Francisca Trujillo Jiménez,Gerardo Barragán Mejía,Daniel Santamaría del Ángel,Elvira Nuñez A,Liliana Carmona Aparicio,Hugo Juárez 대한약학회 2010 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.33 No.10

The effect that osteltamivir has on the metabolism of catecholamines and oxidative damage in the brains of young patients remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of oseltamivir, in the presence of oligoelements, on biogenic amines and select oxidative biomarkers in the brains of uninfected, young rats under normal conditions. The study was conducted using male Wistar rats intraperitoneally treated for three days with either a control dose of 0.9 % NaCl, oseltamivir (50 mg/kg), oligoelements (50 μL/rat), or oseltamivir (50 mg/kg) and oligoelements (50 μL/rat). The brain tissue extracted from the treated rats was used to determine the concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine, as well as the levels of GSH, lipid peroxidation, and ATPase activity. An increase in the concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline and in the level of GSH in the group treated with oligoelements (p < 0.001) was observed, while the group treated with oseltamivir and oligoelements, the levels of dopamine increased (p < 0.001), and in the groups treated with oligoelements alone or combination with oseltamivir a decrease in lipid peroxidation was observed (p < 0.001). The results of this study suggest that the consumption of oseltamivir and oligoelements induce biphasic changes in the metabolism of catecholamines; thereby, inducing a protective mechanism against oxidative damage in the brains of young rats.

Intermetallic-Rich Layer Formation for Improving Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Alloys

        D. Calderón,Y. Galindez,L. Toro,A. A. Zuleta,A. Valencia‑Escobar,P. Chacón,E. Correa,F. Echeverría 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.3

The present work examines the formation of a corrosion protective coating containing intermetallic phases on magnesiumalloy substrates. The protective coating was formed on the surfaces of commercially pure magnesium (cp Mg) and AZ31Bmagnesium alloy by vacuum thermal evaporation of commercially pure aluminium (cp Al) and a subsequent heat treatmentof the sample. This coating was continuous, homogenous and its microstructure was a eutectic phase composed by clustersof α-Mg surrounded by β phase (Mg17Al12). This eutectic-type coating provided 168 and 504 h of protection inside the saltspray chamber for the cp Mg and AZ31 alloy samples, respectively. To achieve this, it was required to deposit at least 5.5 μmof cp Al and then perform a combined thermal treatment involving heating the samples to 583 K for 60 min and then raisingthe temperature to 693 K for 5 min.

      • Seed color effect on germination rate and antioxidant activity under salt stress in wheat

Paulina Calderón Flores,Dae Yeon Kim,Yong Weon Seo 한국육종학회 2015 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2015 No.07

Grain color distinguishes between the pigmentation of the outer layer of the kernel. It is known that environmental factors affects the production of anthocyanins and abiotic stresses like high light intensity, low temperature, high salinity and/or drought stress, and others increase their amounts. After 7 days the germination rate between yellow and dark-purple seeds were almost the same with and without stress (100% yellow seeds under stress and without stress germinated, 93.3% under stress and 96.6% without stress of purple seeds germinated), even though at the final stage the germination was almost the same, we can conclude base on our observations that the germination takes place at a different rate. We think that this might be related to the seed color, since the germination of purple seeds under salt stress started earlier than the yellow ones, until both reached the same point. The antioxidant activity was higher in seedlings from dark-purple seeds than the yellow ones, and they were higher under salt stress than without it, supporting our hypothesis that the purple color in wheat seeds works as a protection under salt stress. Furthermore, the qRT-pCR showed that some genes related to the flavonoid pathway were expressed or had more expression in the seedlings from dark-purple seeds than yellow ones.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis in Polymedicated Patient Treated With Radiotherapy

        Remedios Pérez-Calderón,M. Angeles Gonzalo-Garijo,Silvia Corrales-Vargas,Gloria Jiménez-Ferrera,Isabel Rodríguez-Nevado,Mario Díaz-Delgado 대한천식알레르기학회 2015 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.7 No.2

Temozolomide is an oral alkylating agent indicated for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme concomitantly with radiotherapy andsubsequently as monotherapy treatment. We report the case of a patient who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) while she was beingtreated with chemoradiotherapy and several drugs. Cutaneous tests were performed with the drugs involved with negative result. Although the occurrenceof TEN contraindicates suspected drug readministration, we based the decision to perform the controlled administration of temozolomideon the following reasons: (1) the poor prognosis of the underlying disease, (2) the lack of therapeutic alternatives, (3) the suspicion that other drugstaken by the patient simultaneously may be responsible (as anticonvulsants and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole [TMP-SMX]), and (4) temozolomidewas the first choice for treating the patient’s disease. The administration of a cumulative dose of 60 mg of temozolomide caused a slight skin reaction. Given this result, we conducted controlled administration of other drugs involved. Dexamethasone, codeine, omeprazole and levetiracetamwere well tolerated. However, TMP-SMX produced a similar reaction to that caused by temozolomide. In conclusion, we present the first case ofTEN induced by temozolomide and TMP-SMX associated with cranial radiotherapy confirmed by controlled administration. Radiotherapy in combinationwith these drugs could have favored TEN, as some authors have postulated, but we cannot prove this.

Musclin Is Related to Insulin Resistance and Body Composition, but Not to Body Mass Index or Cardiorespiratory Capacity in Adults

        Yeliana L. Sánchez,Manuela Yepes-Calderón,Luis Valbuena,Andrés F. Milán,María C. Trillos-Almanza,Sergio Granados,Miguel Peña,Mauricio Estrada-Castrillón,Juan C. Aristizábal,Raúl Narvez-Sanchez,Jaime G 대한내분비학회 2021 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.36 No.5

Background: We studied whether musclin function in humans is related to glycemic control, body composition, and cardiorespiratory capacity. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in sedentary adults with or without metabolic syndrome (MS). Serum musclin wasmeasured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Insulin resistance (IR) was evaluated by the homeostatic model assessment(HOMA-IR). Body composition was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and muscle composition by measuring carnosine in the thigh, a surrogate of fiber types, through proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Cardiorespiratory capacity was assessed through direct ergospirometry. Results: The control (n=29) and MS (n=61) groups were comparable in age (51.5±6.5 years old vs. 50.7±6.1 years old), sex(72.4% vs. 70.5% women), total lean mass (58.5%±7.4% vs. 57.3%±6.8%), and peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) (31.0±5.8mL O2./kg.min vs. 29.2±6.3 mL O2/kg.min). Individuals with MS had higher body mass index (BMI) (30.6±4.0 kg/m2 vs. 27.4±3.6 kg/m2), HOMA-IR (3.5 [95% confidence interval, CI, 2.9 to 4.6] vs. 1.7 [95% CI, 1.1 to 2.0]), and musclin (206.7 pg/mL [95%CI, 122.7 to 387.8] vs. 111.1 pg/mL [95% CI, 63.2 to 218.5]) values than controls (P˂0.05). Musclin showed a significant relationship with HOMA-IR (β=0.23; 95% CI, 0.12 to 0.33; P˂0.01), but not with VO2peak, in multiple linear regression models adjusted forage, sex, fat mass, lean mass, and physical activity. Musclin was significantly associated with insulin, glycemia, visceral fat, and regional muscle mass, but not with BMI, VCO2peak, maximum heart rate, maximum time of work, or carnosine. Conclusion: In humans, musclin positively correlates with insulinemia, IR, and a body composition profile with high visceral adiposity and lean mass, but low body fat percentage. Musclin is not related to BMI or cardiorespiratory capacity.
