        Study of Chloride Corrosion Organic Inhibitors in Alkaline Pore Solution

        This paper compares the inhibition properties of aspartic and lactic acid salts with nitrite ions and their effect on critical chloride concentration. The tests were carried employing carbon steel specimens in saturated lime solution with varying pH in the range between13 to 13.6. The critical chloride concentration was estimated through multiple specimen potentiostatic tests at potentials in the usual range for passive rebar in the alkaline concrete of atmospheric structures. During tests, chloride salt was added every 48 h until all the specimens showed localized attacks. The cumulative distribution curves, i.e. the number of corroded specimens as a function of the chlorides concentration was obtained. Furthermore, IR spectra were recorded for the evaluation of the presence of the organic inhibitors on the passivity film. The results confirmed the inhibitory effect of 0.1M aspartate comparable with nitrite ions, at a similar concentration. Addition of calcium lactate did not result in an increase in the critical chloride concentration. However, the formation of a massive scale containing the substance that could reduce the corrosion propagation was observed.

        Expression of Ezrin and Metastatic Tumor Antigen in Osteosarcomas of the Jaw

        <P>AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Ezrin is a membrane-cytoskeleton linker protein involved in regulation of the growth and metastatic behavior of cancer cells. Metastatic tumor antigen (MTA) is a potential metastasis-associated protein. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of ezrin and MTA and their correlation with clinicopathological features in osteosarcomas of the jaw. METHODS: We analyzed ezrin and MTA protein levels by immunohistochemistry in 31 osteosarcomas of the jaw. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 39 years and half of the patients were male. The mandible (n = 19) was more frequently involved than the maxilla (n = 12). The predominant histological type was chondroblastic (58.1%) and 24 patients (77.4%) were classified as having a high grade of malignancy. Immunoreactivity for ezrin was identified in 6 of 31 cases (19.4%), while 77.4% displayed expression of MTA. All ezrin-positive patients had high-grade tumors. The high-grade tumors (n = 24) had a higher rate of MTA expression (42.9% vs 87.5%). Expression of ezrin and MTA was not significantly different according to age, sex, tumor site, histological type, and tumor ploidy. Follow-up information was available for 13 patients, with a mean follow-up time of 26.7 months (range, 6-48 months). At the time of last follow-up, 5 (38.5%) patients had died of disease and 8 patients (61.5%) were alive with no evidence of disease. Expression of ezrin and MTA was not significantly different according to the follow-up data. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, high-grade tumors had a higher rate of ezrin and MTA expression. This expression pattern indicates that ezrin and MTA positivity can be additional prognostic markers in osteosarcoma of the jaw.</P>

      • Nanoimprint-Induced Molecular Stacking and Pattern Stabilization in a Solution-Processed Subphthalocyanine Film

        <P>We present a systematic study on the thermal nanoimprinting of a boron subphthalocynamine molecule, 2-allylphenoxy-(subphthalocyaninato)boron(III) (SubPc-A), which represents a class of attractive small-molecular weight organic compounds for organic-based photovoltaics (OPV). The final equilibrium imprinted feature profile strongly depends on the imprinting temperature. The highest feature aspect ratio (or contrast) occurs at a specific window of imprinting temperatures (80−90 °C). X-ray diffraction indicates that the nanoimprint at such a temperature window can induce high-degree molecular stacking, which can help stabilize the imprinted features. Outside this window, we observed a pronounced relaxation of imprinted features after template removal, which is attributed to the surface diffusion. Key factors affecting the final equilibrium profile of the imprinted features were simulated. From the simulation, it was found that the crystallization-induced anisotropy of surface energy stabilized imprinted features. Simulated parameters such as stable feature aspect ratio and pitch agree well with experimental data.         Formation of Bandgap and Subbands in Graphene Nanomeshes with Sub-10 nm Ribbon Width Fabricated via Nanoimprint Lithography

        <P>We fabricated hexagonal graphene nanomeshes (GNMs) with sub-10 nm ribbon width. The fabrication combines nanoimprint lithography, block-copolymer self-assembly for high-resolution nanoimprint template patterning, and electrostatic printing of graphene. Graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) made from GNMs exhibit very different electronic characteristics in comparison with unpatterned GFETs even at room temperature. We observed multiplateaus in the drain current−gate voltage dependence as well as an enhancement of ON/OFF current ratio with reduction of the average ribbon width of GNMs. These effects are attributed to the formation of electronic subbands and a bandgap in GNMs. Such mesoscopic graphene structures and the nanofabrication methods could be employed to construct future electronic devices based on graphene superlattices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2010/nalefd.2010.10.issue-7/nl100750v/production/images/medium/nl-2010-00750v_0005.gif'></P>

        Topical Anti-Inflammatory Activity of a Monofloral Honey of Mimosa scabrella Provided by Melipona marginata During Winter in Southern Brazil

        Melipona marginata is an endangered species of stingless bee from Brazil that produces honey with particular physicochemical features and a remarkable exotic flavor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report devoted to exploring the medicinal potential of this honey. Thus, the aim of this paper was to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory activity of honey extract from M. marginata on skin inflammation. The honey sample was classified as a monofloral honey of Mimosa scabrella. The presence of 11 phenolic compounds as kaempferol and caffeic acid was detected using the highperformance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-UV-ESI-MS) method. The anti-inflammatory activity was measured using a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced ear edema model of inflammation in mice. The topical application of the M. marginata honey extract (1.0 mg/ear) was able to reduce ear edema with an inhibitory effect of 54 – 5%. This extract decreased the myeloperoxidase activity in 75 – 3%, which suggests a lower leucocyte infiltration that was confirmed by histological analysis. This extract also provided a reduction of 55 – 14% in the production of reactive oxygen species. This anti-inflammatory activity could be due to a synergic effect of the phenolic compounds identified in the honey sample. Taken together, these results open up new possibilities for the use of M. marginata honey extract in skin disorders.

        Phytochemical Characteristics of Seeds and Its Effects on the Intestinal Motility and Toxicity of Joannesia princeps

        Joannesia princeps is a plant commonly used in folk medicine as laxative for menstrual discomfort and as antihelminthic and antimicrobial to reduce edema and improve tissue healing. The seeds are used in many regions of Brazil as laxative; however, studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of using seeds of this plant on intestinal motility of Wistar rats, evaluate the effects and acute toxicity of its management, as well as determine its phytochemical profile. The evaluation of the effect on the intestinal motility was performed according to the model described by Michelin and Salgado (2004) with modifications. For the evaluation of acute toxicity, we used the model described by Craveiro et al. (2008) and Goloni et al. (2005), and for the analysis of the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, steroids, and other components, we used the method described by Carvalho et al. (2006). The results showed that J. princeps exhibits laxative effects similar to those of Senna species such as Cassia angustifolia and the phytochemical analysis of ethanol and aqueous extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes, and/or steroids compounds. Acute toxicity showed in the first 12 h: piloerection, contortion, decreased respiratory rate, diarrhea, and weight loss. After this period, these changes were no longer observed. It was concluded that the seeds of this plant have potential laxative activity, confirming the popular use and that the dose of 5 g/kg can be considered safe for consumption.
