Prevention of Lung Cancer: Future Perspective with Natural Compounds

Brandes, Johann C.,Amin, A.R.M. Ruhul,Khuri, Fadlo,Shin, Dong-Moon The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2010 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.69 No.1

Lung cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death in the United States and worldwide. About 80~90% of cases are smoking-related and smoking cessation programs are of great importance in reducing lung cancer risk. However, the lifetime risk for lung cancer remains elevated even in ex-smokers. Chemoprevention holds the promise to further reduce this risk and thus to decrease lung cancer incidence and mortality. Over the last decades, most chemoprevention trials for lung cancer have yielded negative outcomes. Population-based studies suggest that high intake of certain foods such as soy, red wine or green vegetables may be associated with decreased cancer risk. Because of these observations and their general safety, a plethora of natural compounds is currently being studied for the chemoprevention of cancer. In this review we discuss promising in vitro and in vivo data of novel natural compounds, their interference with molecular mechanisms responsible for lung cancer development and potential implications for their further preclinical and clinical investigation.

Influence of the Processing Parameters on the Characteristics of Spherical Bacterial Cellulose

        Ricardo Brandes,Letícia de Souza,Daniel V. F. Vanin,Claudimir A. Carminatti,Eliana M. Oliveira,Regina V. Antônio,Derce O. S. Recouvreux 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.2

Bacterial Cellulose (BC) biosynthesized under agitated conditions can produce hydrogels with spherical shapes and the processing parameters govern this formation of BC hydrogels. The variations of these parameters cause different results in the formation of spherical BC and it is relevant to evaluate these effects. Carbon source, inoculum concentration, volume of the culture medium, stirring speed and incubation temperature were the processing parameters evaluated in this work. Therefore, the results obtained were characterized in terms of dry mass production, water uptake and sphericity of the spherical BC. To do so, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed as tools for morphological and chemical evaluations. Among the parameters analyzed, the carbon source had the greatest effect on the production of dry mass and water uptake. Glycerol had the greatest growing rate, generating a higher dry mass production with spherical and homogeneous bodies with excellent water absorption indexes. Furthermore, the morphological analysis of BC revealed a typical structure, with high crystallinity index and the presence of typical functional groups. These results indicate a path for the optimized and controlled production of spherical BC, allowing it to be used in many applications, such as enzyme immobilization, water treatment, bone regeneration, spherical cancer model, as adsorption agent and drug delivery.

Spherical Bacterial Cellulose/TiO2 Nanocomposite with Potential Application in Contaminants Removal from Wastewater by Photocatalysis

        Ricardo Brandes,Elizabeth C. A. Trindade,Daniel F. Vanin,Vanessa M. M. Vargas,Claudimir A. Carminatti,Hazim A. Al-Qureshi,Derce O. S. Recouvreux 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.9

Contaminants are often found in aquatic environments, for instance, heavy metals, dyes, parasites, pesticides, hormones and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, large amounts of these contaminants reaches wastewater via industrial and domestic effluents, causing major concern to human health. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a technique for removing these contaminants in order to achieve better efficiency in water treatment. Then, bacterial cellulose (BC) produced in an agitated culture can form spherical bodies composed of nanofibers with high specific surface area. Moreover, Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a semiconductor containing high photocatalytic activity capacity. Thus, the main objective in this work was to produce spherical BC/TiO2 nanocomposites for contaminants removal from wastewater by photocatalysis process. The incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles in the spherical BC matrix was performed by ex situ and in situ methods. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used as tools of morphological, chemical and thermal characterizations of the nanocomposites. Besides, photocatalysis tests were performed in order to evaluate the removal efficiency of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The results of these tests exhibited a percentage of methylene blue removal of 70.83 and 89.58 % after 35 minutes for spherical BC/TiO2 nanocomposites both, in situ and ex situ, respectively. Therefore, these results demonstrated that BC/TiO2 to be a low cost material with high capacity of contaminants removing and a great potential for industrial applications.

Epidemiology, Diagnostics, and Treatment of Narcolepsy in Germany: The DORMIO Study

        Sabrina Müller,Alina Brandes,Julia Knierim,Milan Novakovic,Thomas Wilke,Ulf Maywald,Ingo Fietze 대한수면연구학회 2021 Journal of sleep medicine Vol.18 No.2

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, incidence, and real-world diagnostic and treatment patterns, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), and associated costs of narcolepsy in Germany. Methods: This study was based on German claims data (2013–2018). Any patient with at least two outpatient specialist diagnoses and/or one inpatient diagnosis of narcolepsy was eligible for inclusion. Three cohorts were specified: 1) narcolepsy-prevalent patients alive on July 1, 2017; 2) narcolepsy-incident patients; and 3) newly treated patients. Descriptive analyses of the outcome measures were conducted. Results: We identified 133 prevalent narcolepsy patients (mean age: 46.2 years, 36.3% female), 71 incident patients, and 41 treatment starters. The prevalence of narcolepsy was 3.1–9.1 per 100,000 persons within the German population; the cumulative incidence between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018, was 0.83/100,000 persons. Among the incident patients, 62.0% underwent at least one predefined diagnostic procedure. Modafinil was the most prescribed medication for the treatment starters (46.3%) and prevalent patients (24.1%), but 59.4% of the prevalent patients did not receive any narcolepsy-specific pharmacological treatment. Prevalent patients with narcolepsy consulted physicians significantly more often than a healthy matched control group and experienced more all-cause hospitalizations. The mean total direct healthcare costs were higher for narcolepsy patients by €2,429 per patient-year. Conclusions: Not all narcolepsy patients undergo appropriate diagnostic procedures or narcolepsy-specific medications, as indicated by the treatment guidelines. More emphasis on the optimization of the management of this disease is needed, given its high prevalence and associated economic burden.

Androgen deprivation therapy is associated with decreased second primary lung cancer risk in the United States veterans with prostate cancer

Kyungsuk Jung,Jong Chul Park,Hyunseok Kang,Christoph Brandes 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer patients was associated with a decreased risk for second primary lung cancer in US veterans. METHODS: Prostate cancer diagnoses in the US Veterans Affairs Cancer Registry between 1999 and 2008 were identified. Use of hormonal therapy and diagnoses of second primary lung cancer were determined from the registry. Synchronous prostate and lung cancers, defined as 2 diagnoses made within 1 year, were excluded from the analysis. Cancer-free survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and hazard ratios were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: Among the 63,141 identified patients with prostate cancer, 18,707 subjects were eligible for the study. Hormonal therapy was used in 38% of patients and the median follow-up period was 28 months. ADT use was associated with longer lung cancer-free survival in prostate cancer patients (log-rank p=0.01). After adjusting for age, race, smoking and prostate cancer stage, ADT use was associated with decreased lung cancer risk by 15, 21, and 24% after 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: ADT in prostate cancer patients may be associated with decreased second primary lung cancer risk among US veterans.

      • THE IMPACT OF BRAND LOVE IN BUILDING BRAND LOYALTY AMONG YOUNG CONSUMERS

        Ana Rita Sousa,Am?lia Brand?o,Paula Rodrigues 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

Investigation concerning the presence of customer-brand relationships in online communities is recent and scarce and might offer potential (Moraes et al., 2014; Huber et al., 2015; Vernuccio et al., 2015). The purpose of this investigation is to understand and analyse how brand love can influence brand loyalty among millennials generation, considering engagement constructs and social networks. It bridges an academia gap in the context of the consumer brand relationship literature. This research aims to answer the following questions: (1) Is brand love effective in building true brand loyalty? (2) Does interactive engagement with brands and brand love contribute to build brand loyalty? and (3) Does interactive engagement on social networks reflect millennials love of brands? To collect data we conducted two online surveys, covering two different brand categories: Fashion and Electronics/Technology. We have in total 1278 inquiries. The analyses of data and hypotheses test were made by using the Structural Equation Model (SEM) and a multi-group factor analysis. The proposed structural equation model was validated and all hypothesis were accepted. So, consumers’ Brand Related Social Media Content was proved to have a direct impact on Social Interactive Brands and Brand Loyalty. Social Interactive Brands were proved to have a direct impact on Emotional Attachment and Self Expressive Brands which also proved direct impact on Brand Love. Brand Love for instance was proved has been directly connected with Brand Loyalty and Word of Mouth and Brand Loyalty also, directly impacts Word of Mouth. The model behave well in the previous research so we wanted to test it with a smaller sample and different brand categories the results would maintain. The results of the multi-group factor analysis showed that we have configural and metric invariance in both different studies, covering Fashion and Technological brands. As though for management purposes it might be of no disagreement to state that marketing alone is no longer enough to influence purchase motivation and intention for consumers. This investigation advance and valid a new theoretical framework in the consumer brand love approach
