Structure Persistence in L1 and L2 Production of English Dative Structure

Boon Joo Park(박분주) 언어과학회 2008 언어과학연구 Vol.46 No.-

During the production of language, speakers tend to use the same structural patterns from one utterance to the next if it is possible to do so. For example, if a speaker uses a passive or dative construction, he/she is relatively more likely to use the same construction again in the next utterance. The current study investigates syntactic persistence in first and second language speakers of English. The target structures were dative alternate structures (double object dative/DAT-ACC dative and prepositional dative/ACC-DAT dative). The experimental paradigm involved repetition of an auditory stimulus, followed by picture description. Overall, syntactic priming effects were found. Priming effects were found. The present study showed that syntactic priming pattern is similar between English native speakers(L1) and second language speakers of English(L2). This study shed lights on further universal accounts of syntactic priming.

EFL Learners' Rewriting Strategy in English Composition

        Boon-Joo Park 팬코리아영어교육학회(구 영남영어교육학회) 2009 영어교육연구 Vol.21 No.3

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of rewriting on student compositions that were created without referencing either the first draft or teacher feedback. A total of thirty students in a university-level English composition class served as the participants in this study. The data were collected from persuasive essays produced in-class. For analysis, two evaluators graded two sets of drafts according to a scoring rubric focusing on format, content, organization, and grammar. In addition, further error analysis was conducted based on syntactic and semantic error at both word level and sentence level. As a result, significant improvement was observed in the second drafts throughout the four areas. Also, the results of the error analysis showed that syntactic errors were reduced significantly at both word level and sentence level. On the other hand, word-level semantic errors were not reduced considerably, and sentence-level semantic errors showed only a marginal decline. The results indicate that students could improve their second draft and reduce syntactic error through their own discernment. However, they may need assistance from instructors to correct certain semantic errors, specifically errors related to word choice.

The Difference in Sentence Processing between Young and Adult EFL Learners

        Boon-Joo Park 현대문법학회 2011 현대문법연구 Vol.65 No.-

Syntactic priming effect is defined as a tendency that speakers are more likely to use the syntactic structure in the case that the same structure was used in a preceding sentence compared to the case in which a different syntactic structure was used in a preceding sentence. The purpose of the study is to investigate the difference of the syntactic persistence between young and adult EFL learners. Also, the present study investigated the implicit learning effect. Participants consist of three groups: elementary school students, middle school students, and university students. For the implicit learning effects, each participant took part in the experiment three times with an interval with ten days. As a result, the salient priming effects and implicit learning effects were observed in university students. Weak effects were shown for middle school students and the weakest effects for the elementary school students. Especially, the priming effects on passive and double object dative structure were not observed for the elementary school students, weak for the middle school students, and strong for the university students. The results imply that young EFL learners who are in lack of cognitive prerequisite on L2 linguistic forms are limited to both the priming effects and implicit learning effects. Pedagogically, the young learners who are in lack of cognitive prerequisite knowledge require more explicit instruction for L2 grammar.

Syntactic Facilitation in Sentence Production of English Dative with Cross-Language Priming

        Boon-Joo Park 한국영미어문학회 2008 영미어문학 Vol.- No.89

There is a tendency that a certain syntactic structure is facilitated by the previous utterance in language production. For instance, if a speaker hears or uses a dative construction in one utterance, the same syntactic structure is relatively more likely to occur again in the following utterance (e.g., bock, 1986; bock & Loebell, 1990; Hartsuiker & Kolk, 1998). This study explores the effect of syntactic facilitation across languages : production in English (L2) with priming in Korean. The participants were Korean native speakers who speak English as a second language. The target structures were dative alternate structures (double object dative vs. prepositional dative in English, DAT-ACC ordered dative vs. ACC-DAT ordered dative in Korean). The methodology was based on the picture description task combined with recognition task. The procedure involved repetition of an auditory stimulus, followed by picture description. The results showed the significant effects were found only for prepositional dative utterances and very weak or no priming effects were found in double object utterances. The results indicates that syntactic repetition effects can be facilitated in the shared construction between the languages such as prepositional dative in Enlgish and ACC-DAT dative in Korean.

The EFL Learners’ Parsing Strategies on Relative Clause Attachment Resolution

Boon Joo Park 현대문법학회 2014 현대문법연구 Vol.80 No.-

This study aims to investigate the relative clause attachment resolution process of second language learners of English from various aspects. Three experiments were conducted: off-line test(Expt. 1), on-line test(Expt. 2), and a quasi-interview survey of their strategy(Expt. 3). As a result, second language learners of English showed different RC attachment preferences from native speakers of English in the off-line test; however they showed similar preferences of NP2 following the recency effects. Also, the different RC attachment preferences were observed between the off-line test and on-line test among the participants, second language learners of English. The results from reading time and responding time measurement in the experiment 2 and the strategy survey in experiment 3 supported these asymmetric results between the two tests. The findings may have implications that second language learners of English do not follow the consistent and complete cognitive process for the RC attachment resolution process.

Intercultural Communicative Competence of Korean EFL University Students and International Students: Cognitive Approach through Resolution Latency Time

        Boon-Joo Park(박분주) 현대문법학회 2019 현대문법연구 Vol.103 No.-

The present study aimed at investigating the effects of collaborative work between Korean EFL university students and international foreign students on Intercultural Communicative Competence. Twenty four students (14 Korean students and 10 international students) participated in this research. Chen and Starosta’s (2000) intercultural sensitivity scale was implemented with Paradigm Software to measure the participants’ resolution latency time while they were responding to the survey. The results demonstrated that two groups showed significant differences in the areas of respect for cultural difference and interaction confidence. Also, apart from the response value, the analysis of resolution latency time showed other aspects of participants’ cognitive level of intercultural sensitivity. Thus, this study indicates that a multi-round analysis can give a more in-depth insight beyond the mean value of the survey’s response.

Sentence Processing of EFL Learners in English Relative Clause Attachment

        ( Boon Joo Park ) 대한언어학회 2010 언어학 Vol.18 No.2

This study investigates the sentence processing in English with Korean EFL learners who have limited language exposure compared to the environment of the first language acquisition and the second language learning. The goals are to explore whether EFL learners show the same NP attachment preference as native speakers of English have shown and whether the syntactic priming effect will occur with EFL learners. Two experiments were conducted to answer the two research questions. The results showed that EFL learners preferred HA for relative clause(RC) attachment, contrary to the results in the previous studies with native speakers of English. Also, syntactic priming effects were observed in RC attachment: robust effect in HA and weak effect in LA.

Syntactic Priming Effects on Sentence Production Time in Korean(L1) and English(L2)

Boon Joo Park 현대문법학회 2015 현대문법연구 Vol.84 No.-

The current study investigates the syntactic priming effects on sentence processing in Korean(L1) and English(L2) production through a measure of production time. The purpose of this study lies in investigating whether the priming condition facilitates the production process both in processors’ L1 and L2 production. Participants are 32 Korean native speaking (L1) university students who speak English as a second language(L2). The target structures were dative alternate structures: prepositional vs. double object dative structures in English and canonical(DAT-ACC) vs. scrambled(ACC-DAT) dative structures in Korean. The experimental paradigm involved the repetition of an auditory stimulus, followed by picture descriptions. The production time was measured by E-prime. As a result, while syntactic priming effects were observed both in L1 and L2 production, the syntactic primed condition did not reduce the production time in L1 utterances. However, the time was reduced in L2 utterances with failing in reaching to the statistically significant effects.

Effect of Emphasis on Structure Priming in Language Production

        Boon-Joo Park 한국영미어문학회 2013 영미어문학 Vol.- No.110

An emphasized element in a sentence is usually considered to be a topic (e.g., Reinhart, 1982) and located first in the sentence. This study aims to investigate the cross-linguistic effect of 'emphasis' persistence and to investigate whether production process is facilitated in primed condition by measuring the production time. Thirty university students took part in the experiment. The picture description task was employed in cross-linguistic syntactic priming paradigm with both directions of English(L2) prime to Korean(L1) target and Korean(L1) prime to English(L2) target. The reaction time while describing pictures was also measured using e-prime. The syntactic priming effects were observed in English DO structure. Asymmetric priming effects were shown in the production time between primed and unprimed condition. No significant effects were found in the direction of English(L2) prime to Korean(L1) target, but significant effects were observed in Korean(L1) prime to English(L2). It implies that L2 production is affected by L1 stimulus while L1 production is not influenced by L2 stimulus.
