Vol.- No.37

This paper examined the nature of poems in the late Japanese colonial era through the concept of ‘national poems’. Discussion about ‘national poem’ in this era is generally studied centering on 『National Literature』. However, to consider the nature and forms of ‘national poems’ in the late Japanese colonial era, attention should be paid to the『National Poetry』(1941) and the 『National Poets』(1945). In this context, this paper examined ‘national poems’ centering on the natures of these two media. The former was led by Japanese residing in Chosun and the latter was led by those who majored in English literature at Kyeongseong Imperial University including Sato Kiyosi. In general, ‘national poems’ that appeared in the late Japanese colonial era are known to be a literary ideology that justified the Japanese invasion and supported fascism. However, as identified in those magazines, discussion about ‘national poems’ at that time had much stronger ideological natures than such instrumental natures. Therefore, unlike the existing one?sided assessment that ‘national poems’ served the war, the fact that ‘national poems’ were a literary attempt to surmount Western modern literature through Japanese traditional literary forms should be noted.

This paper presents virtual machining system in order to realize turning process in virtual space. A reliable virtual turning process simulation was developed based on the surface shaping system which is capable of considering geometric model, thermal error model, and vibration model. Accuracy of surface shape resulting from proposed machining simulator was verified experimentally. This paper also developed the watchdog agent that continuously assessed, diagnosed, and predicted performance of products and machines in machining. The Watchdog agent extracted feature signal using time-frequency analysis among various signals from multi-sensor and evaluated machining condition using performance confidence value.

      • Antony and Cleopatra

Vol.5 No.-

We have two contrasting worlds in Shakespeare's tragedies: a high cultured society and a wide society, which are respectively symbolized by "Roman Empire" and Egyptian Kingdom" in Antony and Cleopatra. Rome and Egypt are contrasted with each other : day world of history and night world of passion , practical reason and emotional intuition, public business and private love, etc. Caesar is a symbolic figure of Roman thought. His pride makes the best representative image of the Roman idealism. His personal ambition makes a war between Antony and him self, drying Antony into a military failure, Paradoxically, however, it gives Antony an opportunity to regain his humanity lost in his fatal defeat. And besides, it makes Antony and Cleopatra get the eternal triumph of love. Cleopatra is Egyptian Queen of diginity, a beauty of mystery, a woman of jealousy, and a love of sexuality. Her intuitive search for worldly love-pleasure gives her the images of Egyptian harlot, but she is a faithful representation of what we call womankind. Antony is the triple pillar of the world (Roman Empire). Inspite of his Roman pride and his personal career of military business, he plays an important role of making the movement of the play, from the theme of Roman Empire to the theme of Egyptian love. Even his fatal defeat in the war gives an image of his spiritual triumph, getting Cleopatra against Caesar. Antony and Cleopatra are commonly real people, who are raised up to the level of the hesvenly world of divinity. They are made, by Shakespeare's hyperboles, to took like a hero and a heroine of the fabulous age. The deaths of Enobarbus and Charmian add to the tragic effect of the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra. The defeats of Antony and Cleopatra do not merely mean the end of the wordly human life, but the eternal establishment of the spiritual love. Through the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare seems to have found the true values of human life in the affection, rooted in the sensual natre. rather than in the reason , restrictive in the human behavior.

Vol.2006 No.

In January 2006, the KEDO (Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization) light-water reactor (LWR) project in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) 11 years after the U.S.-DPRK Agreed Framework went into effect and 8 year after the construction work started, and 2 years after the site work was frozen. The LWR issue was resurrected, however, when the 6-party members agreed in the Joint Statement "to discuss, at an appropriate time, the subject of the provision of light water reactor to the DPRK." Then, can the LWR construction be resumed as the 6-party talks make progress? Answers can be found in lessons learned from the failure of the KEDO LWR project. This paper locates four groups of obstacles to the KEDO LWR project: North Korea's failure to implement agreements and contracts, continued political support of sponsors to the project, North Korea's own preparation to receive the LWR and its full implementation of nonproliferation obligations. Unless all of these four obstacles are cleared, the LWR project cannot make much progress. This position contradicts, however, North Korea's position of "the LWR first." In conclusion, this paper argues that unless North Korea becomes a 'normal and responsible' country in international society, the LWR may not be delivered, much less completed. These and above four conditions apply equally to the future LWR project. In order to avoid making another aborted LWR project, North Korea should change and learn to abide by international norms first.

Vol.49 No.1

AbstractF. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is set in the American 1920's called the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties which is usually represented by money and gaiety. However, The Great Gatsby can not be simply read as a chronicle of the. Jazz Age but rather as a fresh analysis of American social experience reflecting the theme of a civilization is decline. This theme is bound up with the corruption of the American dream. The very corruption which has led to moral and spiritual corruption, instability and sterility is attributed to the fact that the ‘spiritual’part has been wiped out and the ‘material’ part has become the only means recognized as a way to achieve the American dream: American idealism or pastoralism has been corrupted by materialism, or what Leo Marx called ‘the machine in the garden.’Fitzgerald explores American civilization in decay through a masterly use of various motifs, symbols and technical devices. This paper attempts to analyze the corruption of American civilization, focusing on symbolic imagery in The Great Gatsby.

Vol.46 No.2

This paper examines how the spatialization of difference by power develops and how others are produced and represented, focusing on the politics of others. Under the influence of Marx's historical materialism and positivistic social science, space has been depoliticized and ignored. Historicism overdevelops a historical contextualization of soda] life and social theory, actively submerging and marginaliang the spatial imagination. In the middle of hegemonic discourses on historicism, a few theorists, such as Foucault, have foregrounded space discourses. According to Foucault, space is fundamental in any exercise of power and is produced, governed and controlled by power. As Foucault shows through the history of madness and the advent of modem bio-power, space, knowledge, and power are closely linked. Power/knowledge spatializes difference in order to exclude others. Space is political and ideological because power/capita] practices the politics of others by differentiating and controlling space. Power/capital abolishes critical distance and represses the self-representation of others by politicizing and dominating space. But Space is not only the site of control but also the site of struggle. The construction of the liberated space, in which others as subalterns can self-represent the otherness in the colonized space, involves a struggle to demystify the spatiality of space produced and reproduced by power, to consolidate a revolutionary spatial consciousness through counter-memory. Such struggle will be a way to overcome the politics of others.

Vol.14 No.2

In this paper, PIFA(Planar Inverted-F Antenna)-type 315MHz spiral antenna for smart key ECU(Electronic Control Unit) is designed. PIFA-type structure gives easy impedance matching and antenna size reduction effect. The frequency fluctuations caused by the circuits on the PCB and the smart key ECU case have to be considered to design antenna. Antenna specifications are the center frequency of 315MHz, 10dB bandwidth of 3MHz, omni-directional radiation pattern, and antenna size of 30mm by 20mm on the PCB. we find that the measurement results are agreed to the simulation results and the smart key reader with the designed antenna is well operated in the outdoor environment.
