Effect of the Ethanol Extract of Propolis on Formation of Streptococcus mutans Biofilm

Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is one of the most important bacteria in the formation of dental plaque and dental caries. S. mutans adheres to an acquired pellicle formed on the tooth surface, and aggregates with many oral bacteria. It initiates plaque formation by synthesizing glucan from sucrose, which is catalyzed by glucosyltransferases. Propolis is a resinous mixture produced by honeybees, by mixing saliva and beeswax with secretions gathered from wood sap and flower pollen. Bees prevent pathogenic invasions by coating the propolis to the outer and inner surface of the honeycomb. Propolis has traditionally been used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, asthma and dermatitis. We investigated the inhibitory effects of propolis ethanol extract on biofilm formation and gene expression of S. mutans. The biofilm formation of S. mutans was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and safranin staining. We observed that the extract of propolis had an inhibitory effect on the formation of S. mutans biofilms at concentrations higher than 0.2 mg/ml. Real-time PCR analysis showed that the gene expression of biofilm formation, such as gbpB, spaP, brpA, relA and vicR of S. mutans, was significantly decreased in a dose dependent manner. The ethanol extract of propolis showed concentration dependent growth inhibition of S. mutans, and significant inhibition of acid production at concentrations of 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg/ml, compared to the control group. These results suggest that the ethanol extract of propolis inhibits gene expression related to biofilm formation in S. mutans.

Starch content in apples is one of important quality parameters to evaluate their maturity or ripeness. This study aimed to develop a rapid and simple method for the quantification of starch content by means of computer vision. In advance, three types, or type I, type II and type III, of starch indices to indicate starch content in apples stained with KI/I2 solution were proposed. When the proposed starch indices were correlated with total starch content and amylose content, the type I of starch index indicated total starch content of three types of starch indices. The type I index was defined as the ratio of the area with pure blue to the total area in an Hue-Lightness-Saturation (HLS) image for apple stained with KI/I2. When the total starch content was particularly expressed on a dry basis, the highest correlation coefficient (0.811) was observed.
대학부설 평생교육원 운영현황 사례분석에 기반한 운영 혁신방안 연구

이 연구는 대학부설 평생교육원의 운영실태를 분석하고, 평생교육원 운영 혁신방안을 모색하기 위한 연구이다. 연구방법은 질적분석 방법의 하나인 심층면담 방법을 적용하였으며, 연구참여자는 대구·경북지역 대학부설 평생교육원 운영 관계자 여섯 명이다. 연구결과 대학부설 평생교육원은 대내적으로 급변하는 사회환경과 시대적 배경을 반영한 비전과 목표를 설정하고 이에 부합하는 세부목표와 추진전략 수립이 필요하다. 또한, 수업환경 측면에서 교육참여자에게 최적의 교수-학습이 제공될 수 있는 학습환경의 개선이 필요하다. 그리고, 시대가 요구하는 다양한 교수학습매체를 활용한 교수법의 적용이 모색되어야 한다. 인적·물적 자원활용의 측면에서 대학이 보유한 자원을 최대한 활용하고 전임교원이 강의를 담당하도록 하는 제도 개선이 필요하다. 프로그램의 내용 측면에서는 대학의 특성과 시대적 변화를 반영한 프로그램 개발과 운영이 요구된다. 이처럼 대학부설 평생교육원은 현재까지의 운영방식에서 탈피하여 시대적 변화와 지역주민의 요구를 적극적으로 수용하여 혁신적 운영 패러다임의 변화가 필요한 시점이다. This study analyzes the operation status of lifelong education centers attached to universities and to seek innovative ways to operate lifelong education centers. In-depth interviews, one of the qualitative analysis methods, was used as the research method. Participants were six people related to the operations of Lifelong Education Centers affiliated with universities in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. As a result of the study, it is necessary for the university-affiliated lifelong education institute to set a vision and goal that reflect changing social environment and the background of the times internally, and to establish detailed goals and promotion strategies that match it. In addition, it is necessary to improve the learning environment in which the optimal teaching-learning can be provided to educational participants in terms of the classroom environment. The application of teaching methods using various teaching and learning media required by the times should be sought. In terms of the utilization of human and material resources, it is necessary to improve the system to make the most of the resources possessed by the university and to have full-time professors take charge of lectures. In terms of program content, it is required to develop and operate programs that reflect the characteristics of the university and the changes of the times. As such, the university-affiliated lifelong education center needs to break away from the current operating method and actively accommodate the changes of the times and the needs of local residents to change the innovative operating paradigm.

Physicochemical properties of starches from the rices of Akibare, Samgang and Mahatma and hardness of the cooked rice were examined Water binding capacity and amylose content were heigher in Samgang. Peak viscosity and breakdown Here heigher in order of Akibare, Samgang and Mahatma, while consistency and set back were reverse order. Hydrolytic patterns of three starches with 2.2N HCl at 35℃ showed two distinct stages. Hydrolysis extent of Mahatma starch was lower than those of Akibare and Samgang starches. The relative crystallinities of these starches were heigher in order of Mahatma, Akibare and Samgang. Mahatma was more resistant to heat and acid treatments, lower in water binding capacity and harder when it was cooked.
