Effects of Narrative Anti-Smoking PSAs on Forewarning-Induced Resistance to Persuasion

Vol.- No.73

Based on the extended elaboration likelihood model (E-ELM) and the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM), this study has tried to see indirectly whether entertainment-education (E-E) can reduce forewarning-induced resistance and the effect of transportation or engagement with the storyline on the viewer’s behavioral intentions. An online experiment was conducted using 800 male smokers, among whom 400 were forewarned about viewing an anti-smoking public service announcement (PSA) and the other 400 were not. The 800 participants were classified into the low, moderate, and high nicotine-dependent groups based on the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence. The results indicate that post-message intentions to quit smoking were stronger than pre-message intentions regardless of the presence of a forewarning and the level of nicotine dependence. The forewarning induced resistance only in the high nicotine-dependent group and resistance decreased after PSA exposure. The difference in intentions to quit smoking between the forewarned and non-forewarned groups before PSA exposure decreased after the exposure for the low and high nicotine-dependent groups. The study interprets the results and discusses their theoretical and practical implications for better understanding the ability of narrative persuasive messages.

      • Empowerment of Women Rights in Malaysia -Issues and Challenges

Vol.18 No.-

The question arise is that, should there be a specific rights for women in a welfare state or are all the related legislations and regulation are also aimed at protecting all gender male and female as well. Indeed related legislation to human rights and welfare rights were equally important to man and women and would have the same impact to women as well. Nevertheless women, being the vulnerable group in some situation, would call for further protection to us as to ensure that we feel safer in public. This paper will focus on issues and challenges on empowering women rights in Malaysia and to ensure that women are protected and not discriminated namely within the context of the International Convention of Elimination of Discrimination Against Women(CEDAW). The paper will also highlight and assess on how the Malaysian Government has implemented the comments and recommendations of CEDAW.

Business and Human Rights : Current Developments in Malaysia

Vol.9 No.3

This article discusses to what extent obligations must be imposed on companies to protect human rights fro and applying the UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights. In Malaysia, the violation of corporate human rights are mainly addressed by or related to labor rights, sustainable development and indigenous rights, human trafficking, corruption and the lack of good governance. Malaysia is a participant in the UN Global Compact and complies with its ten principles, including human rights. More than 120 Malaysian companies have joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and comply with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) introduced its Strategic Framework on a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights for Malaysia Bursa Malaysia and the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) also emphasizes international standards for corporate social responsibility and human rights protection. The Malaysian Constitution does not prescribe the state"s obligation to protect human rights from corporations, but this can be achieved through court interpretation. The Noorfadilla ruling is a good precedent for the application of international human rights principles, in recognition of the possibility of applying the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Malaysian government agencies deal with corporate human rights violations, some of which are mandated and directly investigate human rights violations. However, these bodies do not have the authority to punish or compensate for violations. In Malaysian legislation, companies are subject to criminal responsibility, but are not directly regulated. In addition, Malaysian companies are not making substantial corrective efforts, even though they are under pressure to consider sustainability. The Malaysian government will need to not only carry out implementation guidelines, but will also make efforts to establish domestic laws.

Antecedents and Consequence of Murabaha Funding in Islamic Banks of Indonesia

BULUTODING, Lince,BIDIN, Cici Rianti K.,SYARIATI, Alim,QARINA, Qarina Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

As Islam supports fair trade, the Murabaha is the most popular and most common mode of Islamic financing. It is a contract of sale between the bank and its client for the sale of goods at a price plus an agreed profit margin for the bank. The contract involves the purchase of goods by the bank which then sells them to the client at an agreed mark-up. While their characteristics and values are unique, they are also subject to conventional measurement of efficacies. This study investigates how the primary health predictors of conventional banks under the Basel III regime could provide a positive means to assess the Murabaha funding and subsequently secure long-term profitability. This study constructed a path analysis (from 120 databases) to assess whether Islamic banks' leverage and capital adequacy may alter the Murabaha funding and increase stock equity directly and indirectly. The research findings are mixed where leverage does not alter the Murabaha funding but only affects the profitability; besides, capital adequacy increases the outgoing funding significantly but does not increase stock equity. Murabaha funding is essential to Islamic bank equity. This study implies Murabaha funding are expensed, despite increasing debts in Islamic banks.

A preparatory study on fish behavioral properties in a set-net

Vol.56 No.2

The fish influx and behavioral properties at a set-net off Goseong, South Korea were investigated using an imaging sonar. As a result, the average influx of fish was 33.9% at day time and 66.1% at night time, respectively, which indicated that a majority of fish entered into a playground in the set-net at night. The fish behavioral properties such as target (fish) length, range, orientation and major-axis angle were examined and compared among survey dates (4, 5, and 6 June 2019) using the statistical analysis tool (analysis of variance, ANOVA). The behavioral properties presented differently sometime of survey dates. This is preparatory study to support fish behavior properties in a set-net. It is expected that more elaborated behavioral information of fishes in the set-net is beneficial for designing and deploying a set-net fishing gear as well as general fish behavior research in the future.

      • Application of the Acoustic Method in Biomass Estimation of Multi-Species Fish in the South China Sea

Ali, Rosidi bin,Gambang, Albert Chuan,Rajali, Hadil bin,Hassan, Raja Bidin bin Raja,Basir, Samusudin bin,Shiomi, Kunimune,Fujiwara, Shunji 한국수산자원학회 1998 한국수산자원학회지 Vol.1 No.-

Acoustic resource surveys were conducted by M/V SEAFDEC in the Gulf of Thailand and off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia from September 5 to 28, 1995 for pre-NE monsoon season and from April 24 to May 17, 1996 for post-NE monsoon season, using the scientific echosounder FQ-70 (Furuno Electric Co.). Raw values of backscattering strength (SV) from the 200 ㎑ were carefully corrected and filtered to eliminate the influence of plankton. These corrected SV values were sorted out into pelagic and demersal fish, and were used to estimate biomass for each category of multi-species fish. Biomass of pelagic and demersal fish for each season was estimated both in the Gulf of Thailand within Thai EEZ and in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia within Malaysian EEZ waters due to the availability of previous fisheries statistics and biological data. Dominant species were selected based on the fisheries statistics and landing place survey. Length (L) and weight were obtained from previous literature. Target strength (TS) of these dominant species were calculated as TS = 20 log (L) - 66. The distribution of the SV values for pelagic fish showed a distinct difference between pre and post monsoon seasons. Greater concentrations of SVs were observed from offshore compared to the nearshore waters in pre monsoon season. The distribution for the demersal fish showed that there was no clear difference between pre and post monsoon. The estimated biomass of multispecies fish in the Gulf of Thailand within Thai EEZ for the pre and post monsoon seasons was 9.2 × 10^5 tonnes (5.5 × 10^5 tonnes of pelagic fish and 3.7 × 10^5 tonnes of demersai fish) and 4.7 × 10^5 tonnes (2.0 × 10^5 tonnes of pelagic fish and 2.7 × 10^5 tonnes of demersal fish), respectively. The estimated biomass of multi-species fish off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia within Malaysian EEZ for the pre and post monsoon seasons was 4.4 × 10^5 tonnes (2.3 × 10^5 tonnes of pelagic fish and 2.1 × 10^5 tonnes of demersal fish) and 3.1 × 10%5 tonnes (1.9 × 10^5 tonnes of pelagic fish and 1.2 × 10^5 tonnes of demersal fish), respectively.
