Post-fracture Stimulation of in Vitro Osteogenesis Is Not Systemic
Dutra, Timothy F.,Bernard, George W. Korean Academy of Oral Biology and the UCLA Dental 1998 International Journal of Oral Biology Vol.23 No.4
Locally active post-fracture stimulation of in vitro osteogenesis was observed in this laboratory by Tibone and Bernard (1982). They found that rabbit femoral bone marrow showed a significant increase in the number of in vitro osteogenic colonies when collected 24 hours after antecedent fracture, compared to marrow from unfractured controls. Using the same tissue culture methods for counting bone colonies as a bioassay, we compared bone colonies from marrow cells obtained before and after surgical fracture of the contralateral fenur and found no significant difference in number of bone colonies formed. Comparing these results with those of Tibone and Bernard (1982), our conclusion is that a fracture causes local stimulation of the osteogenic cells of marrow, which is not manifested systemically.

A Novel Two-axis Parallel-kinematic High-speed Piezoelectric Scanner for Atomic Force Microscopy
Bernard Ouma Alunda,Yong Joong Lee,Soyeun Park 한국물리학회 2016 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.69 No.5
High-speed atomic force microscopy permits the capture of static, as well as the dynamic, processes present in various physical phenomena. Unlike visualizing static processes, capture of dynamic processes requires high-speed scanning in all three dimensions. Despite the recent increased interest in high-speed atomic force microscopy, relatively few reports concerning piezoelectric actuatordriven scanners for high-speed scanning have been published. In this paper, we propose a novel design for a high-speed two-dimensional piezoelectric scanner unit by combining the positive features developed from works published in the literature. The proposed design ensures high vertical stiffness by utilizing compliant double-hinged flexure that minimizes cross-coupling and parasitic motions. Any high-speed scanner design requires a compromise between the two main competing parameters: maximum scan size and speed. The performance of the proposed scanner was evaluated by using numerical simulations with finite element analyses in terms of the mechanical resonance frequencies and the scan range. Finally, the results from the numerical simulations are compared with the experimental measurements.

The digital allows all technological automatisms to be unified by implanting the producer into the consumer and through the production of all manner of sensors, actuators and related software. But the truly unprecedented aspect of digital unification is that it allows articulations between all these automatisms: technological, social, psychic and biological ― and this is the main point of neuro-marketing and neuro-economics. The context of the task of thinking conceived as therapeutic is one in which automatisms of all kinds are being technologically integrated by digital automatisms. The unique and very specific aspect of this situation is the way that digital tertiary retention succeeds in totally rearranging assemblages or montages of psychic and collective retentions and protentions. The challenge is to invert this situation by having an ars of hyper-control instead reach towards a new idea of dis-automatization that would arise from out of today’s dis-integrating automatization.
Performance Study on ZigBee-Based Wireless Personal Area Networks for Real-Time Health Monitoring
Bernard Kai,Peng-Yong Kong 한국전자통신연구원 2006 ETRI Journal Vol.28 No.4
When multiple ZigBee wireless personal area networks (WPANs) are in close proximity to each other, contentions and collisions in transmissions will lead to increased packet delays. However, there is no existing study on how delay performance would be affected in a crowded reallife environment where each person walking down a busy street would be wearing a ZigBee WPAN. This letter studies the use of ZigBee WPANs in such a real-life environment for real-time heart beat monitoring. To be pragmatic, we derived a mobility pattern from the analysis of a real-life video trace. Then, we estimated the delay performance from the video trace by combining data collected from ZigBee experiments. The results show that the 300 ms packet delay requirement will not be met for only 11% of the time. When failure occurs, it will last for an average duration of 1.4 s.
Revisiting Greenberg’s “Generalizations about Numeral Systems” (1978)
Bernard Comrie 세종대학교 언어연구소 2020 Journal of Universal Language Vol.21 No.2
This article examines seven of the 54 generalizations on numeral systems presented by Greenberg in 1978 either as absolute universals or as universal tendencies. Five of the generalizations deal with details of the arithmetic structure of numeral systems, with particular reference to the order of elements in the numeral expression and to the use of subtraction and related phenomena in numeral expressions. It is shown that the details of these generalizations need to be revised in light of new data, and argued that even the formulation of universal tendencies is problematic given the rarity of some of the phenomena at issue and the resulting difficulty of establishing statistically valid inferences. Two of the generalizations discuss fundamental properties of natural language numeral systems, namely whether they are necessarily finite, and whether they allow gaps. It is argued, contra Greenberg, that there are both natural number series that are infinite and those with gaps. Throughout, it is emphasized that only the careful formulation of the original generalizations by Greenberg has enabled us to progress in our understanding of these aspects of numeral systems in natural languages.
