        Characterizations of four freshwater amoebae including opportunistic pathogens newly recorded in the Republic of Korea

        Background: Free-living amoebae (FLA) are widely distributed in freshwater, seawater, soil, and extreme environments, and play a critical role as feeders on diverse preys in the ecosystem. Also, some FLA can become opportunistic pathogens in animals including humans. The taxa Amoebozoa and Heterolobosea are important amoeboid groups associated with human pathogens. However, the identification and habitat of amoebae belonging to Amoebozoa and Heterolobosea remain poorly reported in the Republic of Korea. This study highlights the first record for identification and source of four amoebae including putative pathogens in the Republic of Korea. Results: In the present study, four previously reported FLA were isolated from freshwaters in Sangju Gonggeomji Reservoir (strain GO001), one of the largest reservoirs during the Joseon Dynasty period, and along the Nakdong River, the largest river in the Republic of Korea (strains NR5-2, NR12-1, and NR14-1) for the first time. Microscopic observations and 18S rDNA phylogenetic trees revealed the four isolated strains to be Acanthamoeba polyphaga (strains NR5-2 and NR12-1), Tetramitus waccamawensis (strain GO001), and Naegleria australiensis (strain NR14-1). Strains NR5-2 and NR12-1 might be the same species and belonged to the morphological Group 2 and the T4 genotype of Acanthamoeba. Strain GO001 formed a clade with T. waccamawensis in 18S rDNA phylogeny, and showed morphological characteristics similar to previously recorded strains, although the species’ flagellate form was not observed. Strain NR14-1 had the typical morphology of Naegleria and formed a strongly supported clade with previously recorded strains of N. australiensis in phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequences. Conclusions: On the bases of morphological and molecular analyses, four strains of FLA were newly observed and classified in the Republic of Korea. Three strains belonging to the two species (A. polyphaga and N. australiensis) isolated from the Nakdong River have the potential to act as opportunistic pathogens that can cause fatal diseases (i.e. granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, Acanthamoeba Keratitis, and meningoencephalitis) in animals including humans. The Nakdong River in the Republic of Korea may provide a habitat for potentially pathogenic amoebae, but additional research is required to confirm the true pathogenicity of these FLA now known in the Republic of Korea.

      • 지적장애인의 결혼생활 실태와 평생교육적 지원방안 탐색

        이 연구는 지적장애인의 결혼생활 실태 변화 추이를 파악하고 안정적인 결혼생활 유지를 위한 평생교육적 지원방안을 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 장애유형을 구분하여 결혼생활 실태를 조사한 2008, 2011, 2014년 장애인실태조사의 결과 중 지적장애인과 관련된 내용을 정리하여 지적장애인 결혼생활 실태 변화 추이를 파악하였다. 또한 기혼 지적장애인 1명, 지적장애인 부모 1명, 장애인 성교육 전문가 1명, 특수교사 1명, 사회복지사 1명 등을 포함한 5명의 연구 참여자를 대상으로 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하여 결혼생활 변화 추이의 세부적 내용을 파악하였으며 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 최근 10여 년간 지적장애인의 미혼 비율은 70%이상이었고, 장애가 있는 배우자와 결혼하는 비율은 감소, 같은 지적장애인과 결혼하는 비율은 늘어나고 있었다. 이에 대해 연구 참여자들은 재정적 지원 부족, 보호자의 장애자녀 결혼에 대한 부정적 인식 등을 원인으로 주장하였다. 둘째, 최근 10여 년간 지적장애인의 유자녀 비율은 다른 장애유형에 비해 낮게 유지되고 있었고, 장애자녀의 비율과 지적장애자녀의 비율이 점차 늘어나고 있었다. 이에 대해 연구 참여자들은 지적장애인의 임신과 양육에 대한 교육 부족을 주된 원인으로 꼽았다. 셋째, 최근 10여 년간 본인의 장애로 인한 자녀의 성장발달 지장여부에 대해 지장을 매우 많이 받았다고 느끼는 경우가 가장 많고 점차 늘어나고 있었다. 또한 자녀 양육 시 주로 자녀와의 의사소통과 교육비에 어려움을 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 대해 연구 참여자들은 지적장애인의 자녀양육 기술에 대한 교육 부족, 장애부모에 대한 비장애자녀의 부정적 태도를 주된 원인으로 지목했다. 넷째, 선행연구 분석을 통해 도출한 평생교육적 지원방안은 지적장애 자녀를 둔 부모를 대상으로 하는 프로그램 개발, 지적장애인의 결혼생활 기술, 자녀 양육기술 등을 주제로 한 프로그램 개발 등이 탐색 되었다. 이상의 연구결과를 토대로 지적장애인의 안정적인 결혼생활을 위한 평생 교육적 지원방안에 대해 몇 가지 논의하였다. The purpose of this research is to understand the trends of the changes of the actual conditions of the married lives of the intellectual disabilities and to explore the plans for the life-long education support for the maintenance of the stable, married lives. For this, among the results of the investigations of the actual conditions of the handicapped in 2008, 2011, and 2014, which investigated the actual conditions of the married lives by classifying the types of the handicaps, the details related to the intellectual disabilities were organized and the trends of the changes of the actual conditions of the married lives of the intellectual disabilities were understood. Also, the details of the trends of the changes of the married lives were understood by carrying out the focus group interview with the 5 research participants, including 1 married intellectual disabilities, 1 parent of an intellectual disabilities, 1 expert on the sex education for the handicapped, 1 special teacher, and 1 social worker. And the main results are the following. Firstly, the ratio of the unmarried among the intellectual disabilities in the over 10 years of the recent was over 70%. And the ratio of marrying a spouse with a handicap had been decreasing and the ratio of marrying an intellectual disabilities had been increasing. Regarding this, the participants in the research argued that the causes were the insufficiency of the financial support, the negative awareness of the marriage of a handicapped child of a guardian, etc. Secondly, the ratio of having the children among the intellectual disabilities in the over 10 years of the recent had been maintained low compared to the other kinds of handicaps. And the ratio of the handicapped children and the ratio of the intellectual disabilities children had been increasing gradually. Regarding this, the research participants pointed out the insufficiency of the education on the pregnancy and the rearing for the intellectual disabilities as the main causes. Thirdly, the cases in which one felt that very much hindrance was received with regard to the growth and development of a child due to one s own handicap in the over 10 of the recent was the most and had been increasing gradually. And it appeared that, when rearing a child, there were the difficulties mainly with the communication with, and the education expenses for, the child. Fourth, as the methods of supporting the life-long education through the analysis of the prior studies, the development of program targeting the parents having intellectually disabled child, and the development of the programs on the topics such as technique for the marriage for the intellectually disabled persons and the technique for growing child have been studied. In addition, based on the findings of the studies, several discussions and suggestions have been proposed.

        The dynamic stability of railway vehicle has been one of the important issues in railway safety. The dynamic simulator has been used in the study about the dynamic stability of railway vehicle and wheel/rail interface. Especially, a small scale simulator has been widely used in the fundamental study in the laboratory instead of full scale roller rig which is not cost effective and inconvenient to achieve diverse design parameters. But the technique for the design of the small scale simulator for the fundamental study about the dynamic characteristics of the wheel-rail system and the bogie system has not been well developed in Korea. Therefore, the research about the development of the small scale simulator and the bogie has been conducted. This paper presents the design of the small-scaled derailment simulator and the example design case of a small scale bogie. The simulator could be used in the study about the effect of diverse parameters such as attack angle, wheelbase and cant on dynamic behavior of the bogie and the safety parameter such as derailment coefficient and critical speed.

      • Carbon Nanotubes Based Engineering Toolkits: Review and Impact on Agricultural and Biological Technology Applications

        Engineered carbon-derived nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphene oxide have been employed in the detection of analytes with electron transfer kinetics, which are most widely used in the electrochemical platform. Thus, this paper as feature article gives special attention to the solid design and use of carbon nanomaterials, most importantly single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as platform-based biomaterials for agricultural and biological technology applications. Interestingly, carbon based-nanomaterials have some pros pertaining to a high surface-to-volume ratio, excellent electrocatalytic activity, robust biocompatibility and mechanical strength. This review paper highlighted some recent development on electrochemical platforms over SWCNTs, MWCNTs, GO, rGO, and nanocomposites as a promising biomaterial for agricultural and biological technology fields. The design and their platforms as an engineering toolkits of carbon based nanomaterials were described to demonstrate the key point of diagnostics and treatments throughout agricultural and biological technology.

        Two-dimensional attention-based multi-input LSTM for time series prediction

        Time series prediction is an area of great interest to many people. Algorithms for time series prediction are widely used in many fields such as stock price, temperature, energy and weather forecast; in addtion, classical models as well as recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been actively developed. After introducing the attention mechanism to neural network models, many new models with improved performance have been developed; in addition, models using attention twice have also recently been proposed, resulting in further performance improvements. In this paper, we consider time series prediction by introducing attention twice to an RNN model. The proposed model is a method that introduces H-attention and T-attention for output value and time step information to select useful information. We conduct experiments on stock price, temperature and energy data and confirm that the proposed model outperforms existing models.

        Recently, many studies on autonomous vehicles have been conducted, and research on autonomous driving technology has been actively conducted in various fields such as multi-purpose vehicles such as camping cars. In particular, camping cars and large cargo trucks are equipped with trailers on the skin after the vehicle, which are divided into towed trailers and tractors that tow them. The steering angle of the tractor takes precedence over the movement of the trailer because the movement of the tractor and the trailer in the direction of rotation is different when driving backward when parking. Therefore, in order to implement an automatic parking system, we aim to implement an automatic parking algorithm by detecting the angle of the Hitch joint between the tractor and the trailer based on the camera sensor and sending data to determine the steering angle of the tractor.

        지금 사회는 다양한 기술이 개발 융합하여 사회의 많은 도움을 주고 있다. 자율주행 기술이 주목받으며 다양한 곳에 자율주행 기술을 접목하고 있다. 배달은 무인 배달 로봇이 대신하고 자율주행 자동차 또한 지속해서 개발되고 있다. 또한 무인 단말기(Kiosk)의 도입으로 사람들은 다양한 정보와 업무처리를 키오스크를 통하여 한다. 하지만 이러한 급격한 발전과 정보화로 인한 이면도 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 기존 키오스크의 문제를 보완하고 앞서 말한 자율주행 기술을 접목하여 키오스크의 접근성을 향상할 수 있다. In these days, as various technologies have been developed and integrated, human society is getting a lot of convenient devices. Autonomous driving technology is a kind of hot issued area, and autonomous driving technology is incorporated in various places. Delivery service has been replaced by unmanned delivery robots, and autonomous vehicles are continue to be developed. In addition, with kiosks, people can process various information and work with it. However, there are some side effects due to such rapid development and change. This paper suggests a method to solve the existing kiosk problems and combines the aforementioned autonomous driving technologies, which can improve the accessibility of kiosks.

        Enhanced damage index method using torsion modes of structures

        A growing need has developed in the United States to obtain more specific knowledge on the structural integrity of infrastructure due to aging service lives, heavier and more frequent loading conditions, and durability issues. This need has spurred extensive research in the area of structural health monitoring over the past few decades. Several structural health monitoring techniques have been developed that are capable of locating damage in structures using modal strain energy of mode shapes. Typically in the past, bending strain energy has been used in these methods since it is a dominant vibrational mode in many structures and is easily measured. Additionally, there may be cases, such as pipes, shafts, or certain bridges, where structures exhibit significant torsional behavior as well. In this research, torsional strain energy is used to locate damage. The damage index method is used on two numerical models; a cantilevered steel pipe and a simply-supported steel plate girder bridge. Torsion damage indices are compared to bending damage indices to assess their effectiveness at locating damage. The torsion strain energy method is capable of accurately locating damage and providing additional valuable information to both of the structures' behaviors.
